I got tendonitis in my wrist from the violin which is why I play flute and I love it way more and it doesn’t bother my wrist at all!

Guinea_Piggies 324 On the violin, as on the flute, one of the most important things is an angle of holding. On the violin, you need to rotate your left hand much more than on the flute, and this means that you have to be extra conscious about your hand positioning. There are problems when changing positions on violin (eg. from third to sixth, etc.) People tend to woosh their hand up the griff and change their wrist position, which is very bad for one’s joint. To hold your wrist safe, you have to think about going up a one hypotenuse, not two catheti. Violin can be a fascinating instrument, since it allows you to play in a huge register, and also, as a bonus, enormous repertoire :)

My violin teacher has his own studio with 5 teaching rooms (he has 7 other teachers at this studio) I think 2 of the rooms have pianos, but the one he teaches in is the bigger of all the rooms and has a piano so that if needed he can accompany his students while we play. The set up is pretty standard he has a chair (that squeaks) and 2 music stands plus all the music that he is teaching from in front of him so that while I am playing he is watching my technique and the music. He also has a mirror so that when he is teaching/correcting a certain technique I can see what he is talking about. And he doesn’t use a normal metronome either he uses what I call a makeshift metronome which is essentially a broken gold stick that he ticks onto a metal part of a stand he doesn’t use it very often though but when he does I know I haven’t really listened to my metronome at home while practicing.
I know it’s not flute related but the flute intrigues me.

I know how that brace affects your movement - I had a TFCC tear (located on the bottom right corner of my palm attached to the wrist) and had to wear one of those for a good 3 months. Being a lefty that really forced me to use my right hand more or operate from my arm. Do take care of your wrist, I thought my tear would never heal and am so grateful I can play the flute, etc as normal again.

This question isn't directly related to this week's video but what criteria should a student use to evaluate a teacher? How long should a student wait before making a decision that a particular teacher's method of instruction isn't right for them?

Maybe you could consider buying an ergonomic keyboard. It’s not so expensive, and it helps a bit.

Have you ever done marching band? If so I would like to know any tips or stories you have. I am really stressing about the tournament of roses parade that my school has been selected to go on in about 6 months.

Can you play along with a student? Is there lag time with Facetime? A colleague teaches recorder online but is not happy with Skype. She wants to be able to play duets with her students. Thanks for your terrific videos!
