      He needs to have a Co2 fire extinguisher on hand. He was smart not to use the dry-chemical, but should have a Co2 on hand for this exact reason.

      @@Mr_Meowingtons if you've worked on engines you know a little bit of oil on exhaust system smokes like crazy. Just exhausted probably hot the entire time Nick probably didn't concern himself with having oil clean off of it.

    Back in 05 I had a 428 pontiac built with all new internals, comp hydraulic roller valve train. Edelbrock heads. Ran on pump gas. In a 65 gto I beat a new viper to 110 mph on the highway

    First job out of high school in 73 was at a Pontiac dealer. Lots of SD trans ams brand new. Got to do the new car service on them. Sorry to all you folks who bought one that I tested. I was way too young to be turned loose with them.

    That Pontiac is gonna fly with 580 lb\ft of torque on tap. 500 horsepower sounds great but torque is what's it's all about for a street driven car. Thanks for another great video Nick. You guy's are the best! Semper Fi!

    You can tell that Nick is a world class mechanic. Fire in the Dyno Room, no problem. Relax everybody, Nick’s got this under control! Right back to testing and tuning. Major respect to Nick!

    The Pontiac Super Duty 455 CID, even with the lower Compression was a monster especially if you had the stones to modify it. Back in the day, a pal had a brown T/A w/455 S.D. 4spd. He voided the warranty because of the mods. The new Radial Tune Suspension, made it a great GT. AWESOME, I had a 70 Buick GS 455 STAGE 1,4SPD, & Depending on launch &/or traction it was either him or I. For the most part 455inches from B.O.P. were strong & reliable. Imagine with today's technology.

    the 455 pontiac & its little-known older brother the 428 pontiac were beasts.
    The top 428 in 1969 had the same h.p. as a 440 3x2. 390 hp

      440 was under rated for h.p...430+ they say was the actual number ..440 4bbl was 410 hp..
      Torque too on those was well over 500,as the non performance single exhaust non high performance 440 with 350 h.p holley 4bbl had 480 torque..
      350 hp was in most C body cars ,they also had the high performance 440 in those cars as an option..So you guys who pulled the 440 out of a c body you thought it was the high performance model lol,it was still powerful and would roast the tires on a 4 door c body at a 20 mph roll,but not the h.p version most likely..Majority of people dont know this..
      So really they made 3 versions of the 440 4bbl with a Holley !! 440 4bbl with a Carter,440 4bbl High Performance thats the Magnum etc..And the 440 6 barrel 3 holley 2bbl ...440 TNT,Magnum,Super Commando was 375@480 too lol,under rated..

      The 428 was just a slightly destroked 455. You can put a 455 crank in one and convert it easily.

    Nick I always use some Indian Head Gasket Shellac on Pontiac valve cover to keep those gaskets in place. I've had them move under power and dump oil in the past so I always glue it. I know it's a pain in the butt to remove that but I never have to worry about it that causing an engine fire. Thanks for showcasing a Poncho build!!

      fel pro has rubber gaskets u cant overtighten them u dont need any sealer.

      Pontiacs have no tabs on the gaskets or valve covers to locate them, just the 4 bolts. Nothing holds on the chrome valve covers. Rubber just compresses and slips out of place. You have to use the cork gaskets and glue them to the valve covers. I still use 3M Weatherstrip Adhesive for this, nothing else sticks to the chrome even after you scuff sand the gasket surface. I am trying out a set of the newest rubber w rigid steel core right now. So far so good.

    Most kids don't realize just how rare Hemis were. I never saw one in the wild back in the day, just in magazines. Lots of 440's tons of 383's and BBC 396's. Rarely a BBC 427" a handful of crankshaft breaking 454's and a whole lot of Small Block everything's. Nick, I think you've got more Hemis in your shop than all of Phoenix in the 70's! We did get some Ford 427 tunnel port engines through our shop. All were stroked with 428 cranks to make 454 cu in Ford FE's. We built them for a local circle track racer. The cool thing was, out teacher built race motors on the side. We even had an Offenhauser go through the shop, and I helped install the Pistons on that engine. Historical stuff!

      throttle bottle mechical clutch fan. I always seam to find random burst hoses on my roadtrips though and have to wait forever before pouring water in because I've boiled it all out. But when not leaking water it stays a happy 200 degrees...

      adding a large electric blowing in or going electric fan only sounds like a good choice, of course if there's space and you don't mind the non factory look.
      the bright side, your engine actually shuts off when that hot! there's not much worse sound than a gas engine dieseling out the rattle of death as spark plugs are melting! good old drag racing staging melt downs.

    1) gotta pay attention with valve cover gaskets, they can be a real pita.
    2) why continue pull with all that smoke?

      @MAD GRUMPYMAN I had issues with cork gaskets, and changed to metal and composite, pricey but they torque down nice and even and not a drop of oil has left the insides of my new 302W

      @Dave Micolichek I work with Ford and AMC. Never had an issue either as long as I don't over tighten or put too much bias on one . Slow, even pressure snug first then little tickle to seal.

      Aside from the smoke skewing the numbers, who wants oil film in their carbs? I get it though; no one expected it to ignite, and you may as well finish what you started.

      I will admit that my 2 square body Chevy trucks have leaking valve cover gaskets. I hear it because of the bolt pattern on them but I'm not sure. Think the Vortec valve covers are better because their bolts are along the center line of the valve covers. That's just my 2 cents worth.

    Nearly 12 to 1, and only 94 octane? Must have timing high to stop detonation, old school set-up, especially duel 4 barrels. Keen!

    I'm a Mopar guy but Pontiac built some killing engines in it's day nothing like a Ram Air 4 400 or a 455 Super Duty

      Edelbrock RPM Performer Heads with after market rocker arms, i believe 1.5
      Edelbrock RPM Manifold
      Edelbrock 750 Carb
      1 inch 7/8ths Dougs Headers with 2.5 exhaust and Dougs Exhaust cutouts
      Again i am wanting 500+ Hp and 525+ Torque, with this setup. Do you think i got it or very close?
      Sorry to bother you again just wanted to give you some updated numbers.
      If i didn't get near this would getting A hydraulic cam add say 50 to 70 hp and 70 Trq lbs ?
      Or what would be better to do ? Without to much cost.

      You will need quite a bit more cam for 500hp with stock edelbrock heads, id recommend keeping it under 10-1 compression with that cam on 92-93 octane fuel.
      That setup would produce close to 1hp per cid from my experience fwiw
      Now keep your 10.5:1 and have your Edelbrock heads fully ported and use a hydraulic roller cam 286in 300ex advertised duration and 236in 244ex at .050 .632 lift 112lsa
      108ilc
      Port match the Intake to the heads
      Holley ultra 850hp carb and you can make 525-550hp and about 535-550tq and easily daily drivable and run low to mid 11's in your choice of properly setup mopar muscle car.

      chrisrhudy2000 And just think, since you cant adjust the valves in a LS, If Nick wanted to switch to 1.6 rockers on a LS, he would need .050 or .100 shorter pushrods to keep the rocker centered on the valve stem.

      hehahha only narrow minded LS idiots thinkt hey are fast when the reality is bone for stock the pontiac leaves it in the dust! And for them to think 500hp is such a hard feat, i laugh at them for the stupidity they spew. ive got an iron headed 455 i am running also and its got double the axle snapping torque that any stock ls puts out

      Don't tell Chevy about this. They'll be putting 700 pound cast iron lumps in the ZR1. They're wasting their time with 400 pound engines that make 755 hp, idle down around town and get 25 mpg. Yeah these old pigs are the answer.

    Nick, we all love your dyno videos without the fire drama. Please don't do that anymore. And please get a CO2 extinguisher. I lost my first shop to a fire back in '85. Have never forgotten it. Thanks for what you do.

    The Pontiac 400 & 455 were 2 of the best engines made in my opinion. Look at that torque! Beautiful Pontiac blue. I’m a B.O.P. Guy, and have owned many Firebirds, Olds 442’s & Buick Rivs... & built many engines. 68 & 71 Firebird all time favorite! Even the later T/A’s with the chrome swirly dash were the shiz! The Camaro was a poor mans Firebird😉, nice to see this in the shop, thanks Nick!

    It’s incredible how in US you have this big culture of repairing, rebuilding and testing of big V8’s. I love some of old american muscle cars. In shops from Europe, if we see an 2.0 turbo engine is something cool, unimaginable. You guys, are doing an incredible job. ☺️

    Glad to see a pontiac on the dyno. I've been fighting my 455 pontiac out of my firebird most of the winter. Finally got it all sorted out today
    Sounds good. Waiting for the snow down here in Vt to leave to get it out again.

      I own a 1966 tempest.. bought when I was just 19 years old..I'm now 54..
      406.. pontiac motor....12, second car
      10,s on a 210.. shot..
      A 1978 GrandLeMans..half baked big tire car...bought 4 years ago..360 Chevy.... motor.....10, second car..low nines on spray..just a small 125 shot

    The valve adjustment is spot on, exactly how it is done. Make sure the lifter is down, remove lash and go 1/4 - 1/2 turn to set the hydraulic lifter into it's travel...move on to the next,, then install valve covers (properly :-) and you're done.

    I love the fact that Nick dynos anything, and it's not all brand-new, ridiculously expensive stuff, either. Look at this engine...look at the thermostat housing. That's a real engine, with some used parts on it, not "brand new, best-of-the-best" everything like you see on so many shows. They reused what was still good and it's still a beast.

    Love them Pontiacs grew up in a 71 Trans am my dad has had for 34 years which is how old I am lol I’ve been binge watching Nicks garage all day !!

    Awesome video as always. I'd recommend a CO2 fire extinguisher in the dyno cell. Can stop a run away engine, and can also put out a fire without coating the whole room in powder.

      @@kevinwhitted2147 If you've got a fire or a runaway engine, the relatively faint possibility of cracking a cyl head is way preferable to destroying your shop, or blowing a rod out the side of the block!

      @@nickpanaritis4122 CO2 directed at the base of the fire. Use sparingly until fire is extinguished. Don't turn your back on the fire as reflash can occur. Get some hearing (muffs) in that room and hang them by the door. Hearing loss is accumulative and happens gradually over time. CE retired

    When I left high school I bought my Teachers 2 year old 68 400 H.O. 4 speed Firebird.. during the time I had it I changed the Cam to a 360 hp GTO Camshaft with Screw in Rocker Studs and upper Rocker lock Nuts(stock ones were unscrewing from the vibration) I used Anti-pump up lifters ... with zero lash . converted the 4 hole quadrajet stock intake to an open dual plane intake with a New holly 780 cfm single pumper Carb and ran a stock clutch with a modified 4 speed Muncie Trans ...My Redline was 7000 rpm ..the only thing that ever broke were several sets of Motor mounts and at least a half Dozen Stock Pushrods ...I still have the ability to build it today..there are a few tricks I left out.. I loved that car. I sold it 2 years later and used the money to travel through Europe Africa etc for 6 months..thanks Nick you brought back several Great Memories..I get a big Kick out of your Channel..

    All that talent and work probably doesn't come cheap but the attention to detail is what counts with vintage machinery.
    That dashboard looked like the space shuttle lol. I pine for the old days of stovebolts and lots of engine compartment space.
    There is true art in using hand tools properly. Impact wrenches are for rusty exhaust brackets.
    Very nice Pontiac. Looked like an individual runner intake. 28 degrees advance and pump gas and almost 600 foot pounds and over 500 horse. Very impressive. Always good to have extra gaskets in the shop.
    I hope there were jack stands under that low hanging hoist in case someone accidentally bumped into the lever. Another great video.

    Yep got blessed on that one. That's why when running modified engines you keep a fire extinguisher in the car or shop. Imagine if that had happened out on the road, you'd be minus one muscle car. I had a fire on my 69 GTO due to forgetting to tighten down the Positive battery cable all the way on the starter. Due to the current pulled it caught on fire. I never would have thought it possible but it did. Scared the pants off me because we were doing it the garage and it could have taken the house with it. I got the fire out and learned a valuable lesson about doing initial runs on rebuilt engines in an enclosed area. Do them outside or have the emergency fire equipment at the ready and in hand.     I love it !!!! Reminds me when iwas putting custom duals on a customers car and i was cutting old strap hangers off with a torch & there was a hole in the floorboard that i nor the customer knew about, anyway the carpet started on fire under the back seat i never pulled a seat out so quick in my life!!!! I didn't even bring the car down on the rack yet!!! Thank god we had a 6 foot ladder close by.......

    I'm a Pontiac man and the best Pontiac engine to get is 428 bord 30 with 6x 4 heads omg.... right at 600hp with a lame 750 elderbrock carb.....and that's was in the 90s

    Great job on the Pontiac build, great numbers! I love Pontiacs, I just built my daughter a 462 made 556 HP and 588 Tq and put it in her 75 Pontiac Grand Am. It's a monster and she absolutely loves it!

    That engine sounded real good 501 hp, the change of rocker ratio helped a lot. I watch your channel quite a bit, I like it because your not one of these flashy kind of talk above your head kind of guy, love the BB Chrysler engines of yester year awesome power from the factory. I am a SBC and LS kind of guy, enjoy working on both although my LS is in a Pontiac Gran Prix GXP, the engine sits sideways in it, making the back side a little difficult to work on. Will keep up on your channel to see what kind of Detroit iron is next

    You can tell nick knows his stuff,when the fire started he didn’t go for the fire extinguisher it takes for ever to get that stuff off and in the engine.

    I still own my first car, a stock 73 charger with a 318. This channel always gets me twitching to put a 340/6 in it. I even have aftermarket a/c I could swap.

    I adjust valves the same way Nick does. You know the lifter is down on each one every time.

    Nick!!! We need a 500 cubic inch cadillac engine on that dyno with a street cam little head work and intake matched to the heads with a Holley 850 double pumper carb. You will get a surprise of your life trust me.

    Nice. Biggest engine I ever had. 455HO in a convertible Goat. Torque monster. But I was in the Air Force and couldn't afford to feed that beast.

    it takes nick 2.5 sec to get off his seat and into the fire but if you notice he even shuts down the dyno right before he flys away ,, we dont let a little smoke and fire stop the test power has to keep going to its limit

    It was awesome to see somebody deny the use of a fire extinguisher on a small fire.... the fire extinguisher would have done more damage than the fire. Well done Nick.

    Had the same oil fire in a car during break-in, scary but had it out in no time!. Melted wire loom was the only damage.
    Good job Nick to get it out fast!

    We always “glued” the gaskets to the valve covers with black 3M weatherstrip adhesive. Works great but is a wire wheel job to remove. Always used cork vc gaskets.

    Get yourself a pump up type garden sprayer in stead of the squirt bottle.
    After catching the car on fire, I keep one with the welder at all times now.
    If you have to go find one, it's too late.

    ps- I always glue the valve cover gasket to the valve cover, with permatex weatherstrip adhesive. standard in diesel engine repair industry. then it won't slide around. old diesel mechanic I worked for 2 years taught me that trick. we'd glue all gaskets then assemble next day. then if you take it off to relash, change rockers, the gasket stays there.
