This is the first hymn I remember learning in Nigeria whilst in primary school . The good Lord has been watching over me always and it’s no coincidence we all learnt this song at school all across the world.

I was taught this hymn in 9th grade chorus while in junior high (circa 1962). I was so young I sang tenor... one would never guess it to hear me now! I plan on having this recording played at my funeral, whenever that time arrives; it holds a very special place in my heart.

A fine memory of summer camp on Lake Winnepasaukee, NH where a kind and adventurous counselor named Kline led us in singing this, with his stirring tenor voice. Long ago, the rainy summer of 1953.

My sitting room faces South West and as I sit and watch the shadows of the evening steal across the sky I remember my mother singing this hymn when I was a very small child, about 4 or 5. Now I am 93

This is a song for those who are weary and need to rest, and a song for those who are going slowly to their final rest. I've long left the church and all that it teaches, but this song was my beloved grandmother's favorite and remains mine also.

Margery - TODAY, if you hear God's voice, harden not your heart. Today is the day of SALVATION.!!!!! Pray to Jesus RIGHT NOW and say, "Dear Jesus, come into my heart right now and forgive me of all my sins. Thank you Jesus that you shed your blood on the cross for ME!!! Jesus, please take your blood and with your blood please wash away all my sins and make me white as snow. Thank you Jesus for shedding your blood for ME!!" AMEN.
If you did this right now, then God is now your HEAVENLY FATHER and then right now YOU are a "child of God."!!! Let me know if you did this right now. email me at:

This song is sung yearly by 300+ boys each summer at Camp Dudley in Westport NY for their Sunday Hymn sing. It touches my heart and this choir did a beautiful job singing it. Thank you.
