The 2025 Ford Explorer Is Now A Mobile Gaming Console (and it gets some other changes)

- The refreshed 2025 Explorer is the first vehicle in the Ford lineup to get an all-new Android based infotainment system that might just rival Tesla when it comes to compute power. The system uses new, larger displays and a faster processor to deliver not only streaming services, more apps, faster mapping, and better smartphone integration, but also integrated gaming with a bluetooth module that will allow you to pait BT gaming controllers or keyboards. The new system is nested into a new dashboard with snazzier materials and more storage.
Under the hood there are only minor changes. The 2.3L turbo gets some tweaks but power remains the same at 300 horsepower. The low-output 3.0L twin-turbo V6 is gone, and in its place we get the same 400 horsepower tune from the Explorer ST. (The ST is still around). If you want the ST looks without the ST shove or fuel economy penalty, there's a new ST Line trim for you.
Pricing? That's gone up as well, but not as much as we'd expected. The main reason for that is the base "Explorer" trim is dead and now "Active" is the base model. "Active" replaces the XLT trim that the Explorer has had for some time and builds on it with more standard content than before.
One thing that hasn't changed? Towing capacity. That's still 5,000 lbs max, but also 5,000 lbs standard as the tow package is included on every model.

Knowing Ford's legendary quality control, how many recalls can we expect?
Ain't that the truth.
I sadly agree. Ford was our last domestic car. Our 2003 Escape was fun but had issues from new (and this was after having a very nice 2000 Explorer XLS and an 89 Crown Vic). The issues and terrible dealer service department near us (borderline Hyundai/Kia level treatment) turned us away from them for good. It's sad as my uncle always had Fords and my Dad had Mopar. Never had any major issues with the old iron and still have my dad's 66 Coronet that he bought new and drove for 30 years straight.
I'd be surprised if they get less than 2 Recalls for this model year.
Yes
😂😂😂
Appreciate the updated interior, which looks significantly less cheap than the prefacelifted model's. Just can't understand automakers' newfound fascination for in-car gaming. Aren't they supposed to reduce driver distractions? 😂
I can even understand in EVS because u use it while ur charging but brands are adding it to GAS cars now too when are u ever gonna be using it
Maybe some research before commenting. The vehicle has to be parked for the gaming and the DVD player in the infotainment system to work. That's the same in all vehicles that have front seat video systems.
@@Carfan678 when your parked resting while taking a long trip. On a Camping trip or need to surf the net while on a business trip . I'm sure you could figure out uses like the video game system and internet connectivity like you do at home. The controller is blue tooth.
Costs nothing extra if they had to put a decent graphics processor in for the infotainment anyway. Even your graphics calculator can play games :D
I like the Explorer. Design would take awhile to get used to, but interior is spot on, and it seems to have everything. Nice vehicle.
Appreciate for the upload, keep them coming! 👍
I love the explorer but wish the reliability of it was better. If it was, I'd buy one.
Same here. They’re known as “Exploders” 😂
that was the 90's lol
@@rockerdriver
All the police stations happy.
They fixed the vertical touchscreen, nice. If I can get over that storage ledge below it looking like an open mouth, I'll have a look at one this summer.
Interior of ours sucks should have brought over the one from the Chinese market
GM still beats everyone with their infotainment screen in the upcoming Traverse and Acadia. Seventeen inches on all trims!
And periodic freezing is complimentary
@cyrilmatthew2995, it's a feature, not a bug. It's for energy efficiency, just like automatic engine start-stop feature
😁😁😅
People respect you in these in my city as the local cops use them as ghost vehicles.
Wow!
Well, I'll drive a HUMVEE then,
and if it's deemed insufficient I'll bring my M1 Abrams, towing my HUMVEE
😱😁😂😅😄🤣
The old face looked so much better lmao
They should just recall it for the front facia...also getting the interior the 2020 shoulda had.
Hard disagree. The current model is definitely the ugliest Explorer that has ever existed. That trapezoidal grille is a travesty.
2011 explorer face is better.
Agreed! Still looks cheap and basic inside
Since I'm guessing you're not Explorer buyers and just like to making comments on U-Tube videos. Considering the Explorer is the top selling midsize SUV. Who cares IMO
Had a 2019 explorer sport and I will say after that experience. BMW x5M all the way, I’ll whoop you good. Stage II tune for 950hp and 1025 torque. 😂
The prefacelift facia looks way better... this is a step back
I wonder if Ford is considering a “Grand” Explorer variant to compete with the Grand Highlander. Plus a “Grand “ Aviator to go up against the Lexus TX.
The aviator already beats the TX to begin with
Plus the grand aviator is called the navigator
Well to be honest, the expedition and navigator are those "grand" models. But they only have 6-7 more total cargo space than the TX and GH and have similar third row headroom specs
To those suggesting the Expedition and Navigator, those are body on frame. I got the impression the OP was looking for unibody construction SUVs. The Aviator is unibody like the Explorer. Just my take on it.
@jsfbay1 yeah I know that the Expedition/Navigator are BOF. However, considering the TX is a unibody crossover, and being half a foot shorter in height and length compared to both, my OP stands
@@jsfbay1 You nailed it; thank you for the clarification.
I see the Ford-haters are out in full force. My parents have owned two, and had wonderful experiences. I like the exterior, and the grill better than the 2023. To all you saying they’re only police cars, I see civilian 2023 models all over my Georgia city, and they look good. Thanks Alex for the video, as always.
The police vehicles are easily distinguishable with the wheels, and they are most often black or white. I don't get the hate either because all vehicles, including Toyota's, have their flaws.
Unpopular opinion, it looks good, especially the ST.
When I first saw it, I didn't like it, but the more I looked at it the more I like it.
Has reliability improved? The launch was horrid.
No!
That’s a Honda Passport. It even has the cup holders from the Passport
A Ford with large *HORIZONTAL* center display! That's great!
They should use this format for the Ford Ranger too
The thing it needed the most was the big screen like China has and it didn't get that. I think that if we didn't know about that screen, this would have been fairly exciting as there are many improvement both in and out. The lack of that screen puts this a generation behind. You get to see all of the competition and how much more integrated the screens are getting and what they can do.
nice 3rd gen highlander headlights
Alex, Around here, the police department is the biggest buyer of Explorers. Any news on those versions? 🤔
What's up with all the angles and curves upfront? It makes the design look unsure of itself compared to the pre-facelift. The interior though is definitely a welcome change especially with the previous weird tablet placement but it still pales compared to the very premium looking Asian/Chinese market Explorer.
I actually like it.....
Me too. Ford did a good job on this.
Thank you for this quick intro to the 2025 MY. Alex, do you know whether Ford has brought back (from the previous FWD generation) the HUD? Maybe they think it's redundant (since it sounds like you can configure maps on the gauge cluster (MID, whatever the right word for it is.)
The Mobile Gaming Console will come in very handy when the vehicle breaks down and you are
on the side of the road. It will quickly pass the time while you wait for the tow truck...............
Unfortunately, electrical system problems are usually the most common things that get you stranded, that fancy gaming console won't be available because the system is dead.
It went 😮
I'm looking forward to your thoughts on BlueCruise when you drive it. Hopefully they send a tester equipped with BlueCruise to begin with. I'm glad to see Ford is pay attention to the infotainment. Very happy to hear it received upgraded bits.
I wouldn't buy the Explorer but these are all good things for competition either way.
It’s the same gen Blue Cruise we recently reviewed, so check out that video for more
I think we have different definitions of "pretty soon"
It looks great but it is crazy to think my 2018 Explorer is now 6 years old now and I have been the only owner. Currently at 43,208 miles. I like my 2018 but once I do need a new vehicle, I probably will stick with the Explorer since I like how it drives and the 3 row seating.
I’m waiting for the four row.
Just tow another one, you'll have 6 rows
EW looks like a Subaru accent in the front and Kia seltos in the back.
While I know what you're trying to say, I can't resist pointing out that the Accent is made by Hyundai.
He probably meant the Ascent
I love my Subie Ascent, I think it looks quite handsome 😎
Yes, he meant Subaru Ascent, not Hyundai Accent
Much improved interior. But I’m unlikely to leave Honda and Toyota given my great experience with those brands in the past 10 years, great reliability. The Ford turbo 6 performance is very nice though…
Interested in seeing a comparison between this and the new Chevy traverse
But what does the fleet version look like? Asking so I "know" when I see one in the rear view.
Can we see a R1S, vs. Jeep Grand Cherokee off road showdown?
And land rover defender and lexus GX as well
This reminds me of the pre-refresh escape. It wasn’t necessarily a bad car, but it lacked the ford identity and didn’t offer anything to stand out from the competition.
Does it have head up display?
Only massive change is the price. 5 grand for a mid cycle refresh with a screen it should have have years ago. Disappointment I've come to expect from Ford
When will you have a new podcast with Tim Mosso? It’s been a while
The interior is an improvement. Outside…Hmmmmm? Wonder if a redesign of the Edge will ever come. Oh well.
Looking at sales numbers. The new Mazda Cx90. Sells numbers aren't what Mazda was looking for. Having set in both SUVs like my son's 2022 Explorer limited and the Mazda Cx90. The Explorer has more room and with many of fthe previous options now standard equipment. I discovered when building a 2025 Explorer ST on line. The 2025 was actually cost less. My choice would be the Explorer plus I'm not a big fan of Stellantis. If your shopping for a Ford off road vehicle. Most buyers wouldn't care about a 3 roll SUV and go with a true off road vehicle. The large Bronco
Wish we would have gotten one more like the European model. While a decent refresh will it actually be a better vehicle.
The grand Highlander will be the number one 3 row SUV soon.
Interior quality looks subpar, especailly when looking at the Mazda cx-70.
Is the tow capacity improving at all?
According to Ford website, still the lame 5k pounds.
@@donna82435k seems just fine for a midsize CUV.
Can it tow another Explorer?
The police are going to love the gaming option since they are the only people buying this cop car.
These are literally all over my Georgia town - I’ve seen a dozen 2023 versions out and about in the past two days - and they look nice. Don’t understand the negativity.
The Explorer is the number one selling three row vehicle in the country and by a large margin.
@@terence4427
And supposedly 80 million people voted for Biden also doesn’t mean they both made smart choices.
They're traumatized after riding in it in the second row,
😱
, maybe
Curious on how the police interceptor is going to look like lol
"Massive 13" screen..." In a world with 17 inch Tesla screens, 30"+ Cadillac screens, and ~16 inch screens in trucks this feels pretty normcore, and that's before considering Lincoln's new wrap around screen.
The Exploder could use some tire booties.
No Timberline for 2025?
25kwh plugin battery would make this competitive in higher price ranges against BMW X5 plugin and Lexus TX. Plugin
That black roof is a $4800 option. 😮
Might as well wrapped it right.
That's ridiculous!
I continued to be perplexed by the omission of the Pilot; it feels like a trend here. You brought up the Koreans and the GH (and even flashed up a plug for the GM twins), so it isn't a RWD vs FWD thing. I am currently cross-shopping all these vehicles so it is kind of odd.
Imo, looks worse on the outside, looks better on the inside, but the interior still seems very meh.
Did they update that clunky 10 speed?
This one has PSD eCVT drivetrain,
HF-35,
maybe.
hopefully.
They really shit the bed with the wheels on the ST. The "gun metal" gray looks cheap and better suited for a base model. The current model black wheels look so much better!
That grill isn't going to help people forget about the recalls.
The early 2k models were much more reliable and the metal wasn’t so cheap and easy to rust
The front end update looks pretty lazy. Does the rear diff have one bolt or two?
No bolt. Threaded fastener is inefficient and prone to failure
Price going up, even a little is not good in the present market.
Inflation doesn't go backwards, price increases are to be expected. -Travis
Why is the chinese interior better than the one for the US market?
Ford , where Quality is Job Seventh, maybe eighth...
Alex, are there any updated Recalls for the new model year. New Fords always come with new Recalls these days.
Nice! Cops can now game!
Instead of replacing the Explorer. Ford has improved the Explorer with attractive changes front and rear with it's improved interior and added technology. With my eldest son and my wife owning a 2020 and 2023 Explorers (my eldest son and his family own the 2023) . Nothing but positive comments about how well it handles, it's comfort, interior room, ride and durability. The 2025 looks to be an even better and more comfortable SUV. Looking forward to a future test drive.
Dont like the new front end at all. The previous design looks much better with cleaner lines. I like the new tail lights though
I'm on my third one , and it's a 2014 limited twin turbo and it runs great still. I'd trade her in for the top of the line model right now if it were out. That's a gorgeous truck!
ALIRSIN FORD, OLURSUN LORD. (IF YOU BUY A FORD, YOU WILL BECOME A LORD)
Needs a V6
The ST has a V6
Coming to a police station near you..
Its nothing but a lemon😂
Don't BUY until Ford restocks on spare parts, it's 2 yrs and I still didn't get a part for my damn ford. 😢
So safe. So conservative.
Looks like a Subaru forester front end 😬
Looking at the booties made me think you were going to do surgery on the thing.
How will they beat the Telluride and Pallisade with this interior?
Do they need to “beat” them in that regard?
But at least Explorer still beats the grand highlander
@@naveenthemachine man you guys and your weirdly vague subjective measures..
@@ALMX5DPthe GH has cheap plastics inside too and it’s also overpriced
The Explorer has performance and bmw x5 driving dynamics to make up for it
@@ALMX5DPyeah they have to beat them. Because Hyundai Kia have transcended the segment. That’s usually Hondas job
But other SUVs failed to dethrone the Korean twins
Looks like a GLS Merc... Or does the Merc now look like an Explorer? 😂
explorer is the most selling due to police and rental fleets. I've seen more expeditions for personal use than explorers
I see a ton of “personal” Explorers where I live.
I would never buy an Exploder. I work right by the plant that makes them and if you heard the stories and see how they drive these things around the area, well just be warned.
that new dashboard looks sickening 😐
Ok boomer
Or maybe I’ll put a lift kit on a Toyota sienna.
Hopefully you can get base tires and equipment with the HO v6. No way I’d buy the 4 banger
Why not? The 2.3 suits this just fine.
Good job Ford! Way to refresh a cheap interior, with a more cleaner, cheaper looking interior. No wonder the Koreans are eating your lunch in the midsize market.
Are you wearing Slippers?
Dramatically redesigned front end? Its a bigger grille and lights? I wouldn't say "Dramatically" lol
The front end does not look nearly as good as current models. Big upgrade for infotainment, current one is pretty bad.
60k for an AWD platinum? Pass...
Given ford's recent track record for poor build quality, thanks but no...
They made you wear booties? Oh Ford, what hath thou become....
I mean if they are going to show it in a white room, it makes sense they don't want footprints in people's videos.
Still the tiny 3rd row smh. 🤦🏽♂️
If you want a bigger third row then the Expedition is the one you're looking for. -Travis
@@AAutoBuyersGuide well I have a Telluride so I’m not hurting for second or third row space but I’d like to start seeing these companies focus on that area like the Grand Highlander and new Traverse that’s coming. This refresh is meh honestly. When they redesign it completely maybe I’ll take a look.
Why do I need all of those fancy toys? I just need good transportation.
Fancy toys equal profit margins. Companies would go bankrupt selling only what people need for transportation.
@@ALMX5DP That’s the problem. That’s why people like me don’t count anymore.
Well this was underwhelming. I was expecting a massive 30 inch display like we see in the Chinese model or over big it is. And looks wise, they somehow managed to make it look older. Although I think some of it can be forgiven depending on the infointanment functions and ofc the TTV6
What purpose does a 30 inch screen serve? That would be terrible imo
I mean it looks a bit more tech savvy than this yk.
@@TheCapn23look at the newly redesigned traverse. Combined screens is almost 30 inches. This is a huge letdown, especially when the Chinese spec is really nice and the screens are big, and now the traverse is making big improvements.
I hate large screens and don't quite understand the obsession with them. I think functionality, practicality, and reliability are far more important than the size of the screen.
Streaming services and video games while parked… they’re encouraging people to idle their vehicles for hours? If their target market is families with kids then those folks already have enough gaming devices at their homes and mobile devices like tablets and smartphones thus don’t need more crap.
Imma be honest, the showroom kinda over hyped that there should be more changes. It’s still just a boring glorified police cruiser
I know this is nitpicky, but why are Ford steering wheels always so cheap looking? The buttons in particular look like they were ripped out of a 10-12 year old car.
Lol the Chinese Explorer still looks better than this refresh. It’s almost as if they put more effort into their foreign cars than their home turf vehicles
No naturally aspirated engine... turbo heat and pressure. No thanks
Aren’t these the most unreliable SUV in America?
Are you performing surgery in the explorer? The booties seem a bit much. It’s a vehicle not an artificial heart.
I’m sure he wasn’t wearing them by choice.
@@Brian-hd6rw I didn’t say it was his choice obviously it would be ford but why. So silly.
