  • Since Amazon discontinued the Kindle Oasis people are starting to look for alternatives. And with color E-Ink tech getting better by the day, there's a growing buzz around it. This e-reader-or should we call it a tablet?-tries to fill that niche for an upgrade to color E-Ink, but it doesn't quite nail it for a few reasons.

    I just got this device. I would say the front light is dim but still enough for me. The weak point should be the battery life. With 2300mAh battery, I have to charge it everyday.

    This is an excellent video, Chalid. I was thinking about this but the dimness of the display even with front light is hard to justify. I'm thinking I'll just step up the investment and get a Tab Mini C which seems to overcome that dimness better.
    p.s. Please take this in the best way...... I miss your more natural voice!😊

      The Boox Tab Mini C is my personal favorite Kaleido 3 device right now. It has a great front light quality and also good color saturation for E-Ink. Can't really go wrong with it imho. I just recommend getting it from Amazon or a local reseller, in case you need warranty, which seems to be better handled than with Boox directly (from what I've read on the internet).
      About my voice: Thanks :D I'm always tinkering a bit with everything for better clarity, but it might change again in the future ;)

    I have had time to see two b751c with a serial number difference of around 1000. In terms of front light, one looks more yellow than the other, and slightly dimmer, when in pure "blue light" mode. It is possible that the newer badges has a different front light installed.

    • @ChalidRaqami
      @ChalidRaqami  Před 3 měsíci

      Definitely possible. With some manufacturers there's a bit more variance than with others when it comes to the frontlights. Kobo and Kindle are typically pretty stable at this point (from one device to another), but even there you see difference when having a couple devices side by side.

  • @HaswellCore
    @HaswellCore Před 4 měsíci

    Boox Leaf 3C looks more promising. Do you think it is worth it? about 50€ more expensive than the regular Page here in China.

    • @ChalidRaqami
      @ChalidRaqami  Před 4 měsíci

      I suspect on the software side the Leaf 3C is exactly the same as other recent Boox devices, so it's better than Bigme. So that alone would make it much easier to recommend for me.
      The biggest uncertainty is the frontlight brightness. If brightness is higher than on the Bigme B751C, than I'd say the 50€ more are definitely worth it.

    Hi, nics video! Just one question, boox build in reader has this function of connecting and sync the books stored on google drive. Does Bigme have such feature as well? Or should i just play safe and go with Boox Go Color 7 even its without BSR (while this have something similar)?

    • @ChalidRaqami
      @ChalidRaqami  Před 29 dny

      Thanks! It's not directly integrated into the library, like on Boox, but they do have Google Drive available for a quick one-click download and installation from within the apps-drawer. So you'd need to handle the files through that app. You can also use other cloud apps and if that supports setting the Books-folder you can use it to directly sync to the library.
      So in short: No, but with extra steps you can sync files with the cloud.

    I recently got the Bigme 751C and on of the first things I noticed was the screen seemed quite grainy compared to the kindle I've owned for 8 years. I'm wondering if this is normal for this device or if I got a defective one. If it is normal, what device would you recommend? I primarily use mine to read but want something that allows me to download the various reading apps I use and not just be locked into kindle for reading.

    • @ChalidRaqami
      @ChalidRaqami  Před 3 měsíci +2

      Generally E-Ink Kaleido 3 screens are a bit grainy, but the Bigme B751C in particular feels even more grainy imho because the frontlight brightness is somewhat low. I felt the same way when first trying it and would say all other E-Ink Kaleido 3 devices are better in that regard, because the frontlight gets brighter.
      If you want colors, I'd recommend the Boox Tab Mini C. I feel like it's the best in terms of screen quality and flexibility. If you don't need colors, the Boox Page or Leaf 2 are solid choices, with a cleaner black-and-white E-Ink screen, like you know from Kindle ereaders.
      I'd just recommend getting Boox devices from Amazon or a local reseller, because I've read comments, that Boox can be difficult when it comes to warranty. That's typically easier with Amazon or a local retailer. But to be fair, the only time I had an issue with a Boox device was 2014 with a defective battery. All current models I have here don't have any issues so far.

      @@ChalidRaqami Many people try to pass off damage caused by negligent handling as a warranty issue and it goes without saying that Boox does not accept this.

    are Kindle readers able to read the other eBook formats..? similarly, can kobo etc read Kindle eBooks.? this never seems to be made clear on the manufacturers websites. I'm currently using my old Xperia Z4 tablet for eReading, but I might consider a colour eInk device now - bit I don't want to be locked out of the other 'stores'.

    • @ChalidRaqami
      @ChalidRaqami  Před 3 měsíci +2

      Pretty much everybody except for Amazon (Kindle) supports EPUB files natively. Which means you can open those files directly on the ereader without doing any conversions. Amazon supports epub-file-conversions through send to Kindle for some time now as well though.
      However, DRM protected files might not work with every device. It depends on what kind of protection is in place. Kobo is also using it's own file format (kepub) which is a bit different and doesn't work on other devices natively.
      So depending on where you got your ebooks in the past, you might need to do file conversions with "Calibre"-software. You can try that without having an ereader to see if you encounter any problems. I recommend checking out the mobileread.org forums for more info on that.
      To not be locked to one provider I'd recommend having a look at PocketBook or Boox devices. With PocketBook you can open many different file formats directly without having to do much and they support different DRMs as well. With Boox (or Bigme) you can use Android apps.
      Sorry, it's not an easy question to answer, but I hope it helps a bit nonetheless.

    Hi ! I was looking for good tests about e-ink tablets (which is not easy), but i really like your tests with this kind of "academic presentation". I am looking for an e-ink tablet to study languages. I was interesting in the boox note air 3 but since i know the tablet phone home China and they "stole" the core i am looking for an other option. Have you planned to make your ranking for this kind of e-ink tablet ?
    Edit : mainly if you have to compare the boox note air versus the mooink pro 2 vs Hannsnote 2 vs remarkable 2.
