  • Sick of bending over to grab every log when splitting firewood? This very useful tool can cost $50 in the store but you can make it for $10 and about an hour of your time...and it is a fun little project!

    Great Job young man. I made mine after I saw how much they wanted for them. Anywhere between $40 and $120. Laughed my ass off. Mine was made from a broken Sledge hammer handle, a 1/2" X 5" rusted bolt, nut and I did purchase 2 large flat washers for .36 cents each. Pay no attention to the pretty boy comments. Take pride in how easy it is to pick up wood and save a bundle heating with wood.

    Nice job dude, i would put some heat into the tip and dip it into oil to harden it, also there are really two types of grinder blades cutting & grinding, get yourself some cutting blades

    when you rehandle an ax, you take way some to fit it, not cut away some metal

    You had an idea.
    You bought a wooden handle
    You scrounged some scrap steel
    You had some fun building it
    Most importantly It's works!
    Kudo's!

    Oh and by the way, look at making a pick pole. I made mine after watching this guy on you tube use one. I made mine out of an old Ice Spud, I used for chopping holes in ice for fishing. Anyway, a pick pole is so much easier to use than a pickaroon. Speaking from a lifetime of experience at 72.

      Claire Jean Thanks for joining us Claire! I really enjoyed making this pickaroon. I use it all the time. You should consider hardening the pick after you have it bent to your specifications...i am planning on doing that my next free moment :)

    Maybe for cutting the metal, try using a blade that is only 1mm wide, it will cut much much quicker and will not make the piece so hot.
    There are many 1mm blades for the angle grinders, made to cut stainless steel.

    There are cutting wheels that go on those 4" grinders. I much prefer cutting with them and then use the thick wheel you have for grinding.

    How does the wood hold up after welding over it? I am making one as well using a very similar method but i was a little worried about the handle integrity if i welded over it...any tips in that area?

    • @AirspeedAdventures
      @AirspeedAdventures  Před 9 lety +1

      I took extra care to make sure that I wasn't staying in one place for too long when welding near the handle. It has a tendency to catch fire, so if you are quick to extinguish it, it will be fine. Also, another approach would be to soak the handle in cold water for 10 minutes or so. The colder the better...Warm water will soften the fibers of the wood (not that it would matter too much in this instance). It will provide slower combustion. Another alternative would be to put a welding blanket over the wood handle. I'd love to see pictures of your pickaroon when you are finished! You can email them to me at redneckhomestead@gmail.com! Thanks for stopping by, and I hope you will subscribe!

    Great video!! I didn't know you made one of these. Pretty neat. We have some huge nails in the barn that I could use to make a pickeroon. They're already sharp all I'd have to do is weld it to an ax. What brand of welder did you use? I have a cheap flux core welder from harbor freight..... Love your channel!!!

    • @AirspeedAdventures
      @AirspeedAdventures  Před 9 lety

      Love2boat92 Thanks man! I used a little Lincoln fluxcore welder for this. it was a fun little project and i use it quite a bit

    • @Lanninglongarmmowing
      @Lanninglongarmmowing Před 9 lety

      Redneck Homestead No problem. Lincoln makes some nice stuff. Flux core is such a cheap form of welding. No gas is wonderful and you can weld outside. After seeing your video I found an old broken splitting ax handle that was bad in a flower bed. lol. Cut the end off. Bent some old gas pipe around the ax head. Welded a very sharp bolt to the water pipe. Put 2 lag bolts and a few screws into the head to make things tight. Sanded the old finish off and I now have myself a pickeroon for less than $5. Lol. I've used it already and man is it handy. I really like it. Thanks for taking the time to make this video.

    First of all you did a good job making the pickaroon but getting a cut off wheel for the grinder would help a lot and I'm not sure if know but your grinder is running the wrong way it's very dangerous the sparks should be going down to the ground or behind you it's much harder to control in that direction

    Why would you waste your time welding that piece of Steel back on just put a bolt through the center besides that it'd be tighter with the bolt through the center's you pull that together you won't be able to pull together that piece of metal in there

  • @jimtomlinsom1279
    @jimtomlinsom1279 Před 9 lety

    Nice but you've got to add your time in labour to the cost surely...time is the most expensive thing. Say it took you half a day to make and you earn $150-$200 a day....For me it's a no brainer to buy a proper one. But if you enjoy making things that's different. Hope it serves you well.
