It’s pretty reasonable to expect given Maynard was smothering. Arms/shoulders would absorb the majority of the initial impact force making a double KO ridiculously unlikely even if there was a small head collision after that. Don’t know how you just assume that it’ll be direct head on head.

It's a split second thing, with no malice, and at worst an unconscious error by Maynard. The game of Aussie Rules is full of them, and the code is by nature dangerous for all players. The AFL is trying to make it less so, but there will always be risks because players have to throw their bodies around to effect tackle and in this case, smother the ball. Who is to blame if two players launch themselves simultaneously into the air, and one of them realizes a collusion is imminent and covers up? Unfortunately for both, it's part of the game.

Put it this way (hypothetical), if Maynard knew he was going to knock him out mid air, he changes the way he braces. The question that is more important is; is the health (head) of the player more important than feeling sorry for a player that 'unfortunately' KO'd another bloke? NBA players are able to run at a jump shooter, jump to contest the shot and contort their body in mid air to avoid contact and subsequently avoid fouling the shooter numerous times a game, thousands of times a season. Maynard could have turned his body the other way and at least tried to avoid contact. Players are taught when they first start playing the game to "go for the footy". Footy is a fast-paced game and finals are high-pressure and high-intensity. There's not much time to think. All Maynard tried to do was attack the footy, it just wouldn't be fair to rub him out for something that happened accidentally.
Had Maynard chose to stand still and not do what he did, he would've received criticism for not trying hard enough. It was a damned if you do, damned if you don't situation. Everybody is playing to keep their spot in the side and to keep their premiership hopes alive.
Brayshaw getting knocked out was purely accidental, yet unfortunate.
The AFL can only do so much to "protect the head" but unfortunately due to the nature of the sport, hits to the head are inevitable.
Ultimately the decision is up to Brayshaw, whether he's willing to take the risk and continue playing. He as a professional footballer should know that concussions are sometimes unavoidable in football.

Reckless and put Brayshaw in a vulnerable position as he had no chance of protecting himself. He could easily have attempted a smother without launching himself up and forward as he did in that situation, it was a pretty stupid thing to do. Fair enough a lot of players do stupid things in the moment without much thought but when it leads to another player being knocked out (especially when the AFL go on about head protection) there should be an appropriate punishment.
It wasn’t unavoidable, had he attempted the smother in a different and normal/safer fashion it would’ve been avoided. There’s a difference between being totally committed and aggressive and being reckless and stupid.

When the running Maynard jumped to spoil the ball, he raised both hands simultaneously upwards. Raising the hands this way means that at the time of leaving contact with the ground, there is no backward swing of an arm to balance the forward swing of the opposite leg (the leg which made last contact with the ground). This meant Maynard left the ground with a rotational force, and it is this that turned Maynard's shoulders while airborne. (If you observe long jump athletes, when they jump, the foot that makes the leap is on the opposite side to the backward direction of the arm movement -- this is to offset the push of the jumping leg.)
The other point is Maynard instinctively bent sideways at the waist in a subconscious attempt to avoid head collision. This, in combination with the rotation described earlier, makes it appear he turned his shoulder into Brayshaw.
It is a bit more complex than the description, but is the general idea.

I can’t stand Collingwood and would be happy for them to lose a player but not this way…Teammates have knocked each other out before.. should that be a reportable offence? This is strange..

    1. The footy action argument is rubbish - tackling is a footy action but do it wrong you get suspended.
    2. The AFL all year has said if you choose a course of action and hit the head it is your responsibility so you are gone.
    3. Media pathetic - if this was May taking out Daicos their reaction would be totally different.

Having been the cause of the collision the responsibility falls on Maynard to prevent or soften the effects, not just to protect himself. He sought to smother or touch the football and yet he knocked out the the oncoming player, for which he has to take responsibility.

Regardless of how this case goes through the tribunal what concerns me is the hypocrisy these AFL heads seem to marinate in. There main concern is injuries to the head and rightly so but what about the "screamer" when a player flies through the air hits the shoulder or cannons their knee(s) into the back of another players skull! Nothing, oh it's part of the game but it doesn't change the potential of serious injury! Ask a kickboxer or an MMA fighter what damage a knee can do. These AFL squareheads need to understand that there are risks within the game and that's the punt players take when playing the game.

Maynards actions ended a players finals series. Lynch was in a pack during a marking contest.
No player goes to knock a player out but Maynard knew the risks when jumping. Sorry, deserves weeks. Otherwise every player will just jump in the air to hurt and use the "i was in the air" excuse.
