  • How To Sit The Canter Using Your Seat | In this video I will explain how I use my seat to stay in the saddle in canter. The one thing you do NOT want to do is "sit still" as the seat of the rider is very active when cantering on a horse. How you sit the canter will have a great effect on how balanced you are in the saddle. Cantering on a horse can be a scary experience for some people but if you have an understanding of what you should be doing with your seat you will find it much easier. I show you some cantering tips which will help you find your balance.

    I hope this video helps you to understand that cantering on a horse is an ACTIVE process for the rider and "sitting still" is probably the worse thing you could do. Thank you for watching.

    i have cantered before a tiny little bit in an arena, like maybe for 4 or 5 strides then i would lose my footing or my balance and have to stop. I watched this video yesterday, knowing i would be riding today, trying to muster up the courage to go outside and really canter. This video was so incredibly helpful, knowing how my hips are supposed to move and even though it wasn't mentioned, how my feet should be so my foot doesnt slip out of the stirrup (3 mo. out from a broken ankle, foot keeps slipping out) . It was helpful to know how my arms should be fluid in the elbow too, although i did pull back a lot still bc of fear and to get her to slow downt to stop...but i kept going, out in the long field, and Tweed gave me a lot of patience and a lot of trials and finally...i started cantering naturally with my hips. I didn't realize they would be turned a bit, as well as my shoulders...i thought i was doing something wrong, but i gave in to that bc i didn't really have a choice...if i tried to sit perfectly straight hipped, i would be off balance and almost fall off. So once i gave into her body movements, and just let go...we cantered for a good distance and it wasn't bumpy or anything. It was like we were the same body...so cool!!! Thank you for giving me great direction to give me the confidence to try to canter with one of the most amazing horses in the world, Tweed

There are two horses near where I live and the lady that owns them has said that I'm welcome to visit and ride if I want, but I don't know these horses, and it's been ages since I rode last time. I will try to get to know them better, ask about them and always get off if I don't feel safe. Your videos really help me to "reconnect" with what I used to know. Thank you so much.

    Rebel is such a good boy!! He's very balanced and gorgeous. You explained sitting at the Canter very well. In Canada or North America I should say, we have two schools which never made sense to me, the Hunter/Jumpers and Dressage. I was trained since early childhood in the Hunter/Jumper world and it frustrated me because they teach you to be ahead of the vertical most of the time which causes the horses to be hallow and not relaxed or on the bit. And they don't do enough work on the flat for horse and or rider. You see a lot of bums in the air and horse's noses in the air, falling in around corners, leaning on the forehand etc... I always felt better at the vertical, sitting in the saddle and going with the motion as we do in dressage and it's correct all around for everyone. What helped me to really get that deep quiet seat was no stirrups.... a lot! And letting my stirrups down 4 holes! lol
    Great advice, your position is spot on and it shows in Rebel!! Thank you!!

    At 60 yrs old I started to take lessons again. My coach asked me to canter in a circle. I did a terrible job after not cantering for a while ( my canter does need work). First off I was shocked at this horse's canter it was so jarring. Long story short I pulled a back muscle and now I'm out of commission for a while. I have a beautiful warmblood that unfortunately is not sound anymore. I loved his canter...not that my canter doesn't need work it does. I need a horse to ride so I can practice.

It feels to me as if her back end falls out and is stumbling for a second. But that's when she has had the habit of bucking from the shoulder. As if she gets out of balance when this happens which causes this bucking quirk. She told me to work on just trotting, and then transition into the canter for a few strides, then break into a trot. Back and forth doing this. What are your thoughts? She is a 21 yr old Arab 15.1 hands.

    I just wanted to ask, in the canter, do you grip the saddle with your legs or relax to allow flexibility of the hips
    I am new to horse riding and I am having trouble bouncing in the saddle when cantering

    • @gailgalida
      @gailgalida Pƙed rokem

      Do not grip. Your legs are there around the horse but not gripping to hang on

    Good explanation, but the camera is so jerky trying to move with the horse that I can't see the movement being demonstrated.

      Sorry about that Virginia, I film on my own and my Pixio was on its last legs when I filmed this. I have since bought a new one so hopefully, I won't have these problems anymore.

      I would think it would be Noor but your horse may try to compensate for your asymmetry.

    but i just can't sit down, my horse's canter is too fast
    the proof is i was on a different horse and i could sit down so i think the horse i am riding rn is way too fast for me
    MY LITERALLY TELL ME TO SIT STILL ON MY SADDLE

      Thank you for your feedback Shannon I appreciate it 🙂. I film on my own and use a Pixio so sometimes it did appear a bit "jerky" but that old one finally gave up on me so I have a new one Yay! I have recorded my latest video on the new one and it does appear to be a lot smoother. 🙏it will stay that way.

    I physically can not sit my horses canter. No matter how hard I try, I just keep bouncing. It’s so annoying and uncomfortable. He’s so bouncy and moves his head a ton so when I can sit it kind of, I’m just pulling on his face.

    “This joint” as they point to a dark shadowy area. “Open”
 What opens? To the side? Upward? Maybe this makes sense if you already have been doing it for a long time. Otherwise useless. And sorry to be blunt. I really do love people who share information to help others! This just doesn’t translate.

    • @BasicHorseTraining
      @BasicHorseTraining  Pƙed rokem +2

      You can be blunt that is fine. I will reply in a blunt manner. There is only one joint in the dark shadowy area ... the hip joint!! Nothing else there just the hip joint. The joint opens and if you watch the video and concentrate on the hip joint you will see which way it opens! It has translated to a lot of people. 😉

    • @horsehangout
      @horsehangout Pƙed 4 měsĂci

      Open hip happens when your leg is straight, as in when you are standing . Close hip happens when your leg raises up towards your chest. The most open hip position is a bridge backbend while the most closed would be a forward bend touching your toes

    I love this, but I absolutly despise the noseband on the bridle. Its just plain abuse. The horse is being kept from opening its mouth when the bit causes it pain. Please change this!!
