Should Biden Step Aside? | Open to Debate

  • During the current election cycle, President Biden has dismissed concerns about seeking re-election. He says that he is fit for the job and in it to win it. But after the first 2024 Presidential Debate, many public officials, donors, and die-hard Democratic voters have expressed deep concern about Biden’s performance. They are now facing an existential question about his campaign's viability against Donald Trump and whether a new candidate would be a better option. Those who think Biden should step aside argue that his performance during the debate and recent public appearances raises questions about his age and mental acuity and his capacity to lead the nation for another term. They argue that a new candidate could re-energize the Democratic base and appeal more broadly to younger voters, swing voters, and those disenchanted with the status quo, improving the Democrats' election chances. Those who believe he should not step aside insist that the democratic process should be respected, allowing Biden to run if he wishes and letting voters decide his fate. Stepping aside now would fragment the party at a crucial moment and Biden’s experience in both domestic and international politics are invaluable, particularly when contrasted with Trump's polarizing tenure.
In this critical moment in the election process, we debate: Should Biden Step Aside?
Please note: This discussion was recorded on July 11th before the assassination attempt on former President Trump.

The denial here is jaw-dropping. Sleep walking into disaster. If the democrats had done anything substantial for working people, we wouldn't be having this debate. If Americans had healthcare, Trump wouldn't be a problem.

The democrat party knew how old Joe is, they had 4 years to look for a new candidate now they are panicking.
    Prepare those tears for November.

I think that John is thinking he didn't exactly pick the right two people for the broader question. The question these two are debating is, "Can Biden beat Trump?"

It’s incredibly anti-Democratic to throw out the only votes cast in the primary and instead have the donors and party elite anoint a candidate is against everything they claim to stand for.

Honestly if we’re gonna have both sides do a cognitive test it would need to be the same for both under the watch of people from both parties.

I didn't like the debate because I don't like their premise. Evidently the debaters never heard the phone call between Biden or Hunter with Ukraine over the prosecuter there. Or how did the Biden family end up with so much money?! as public employees?

What happens if they both take cognitive tests and Trump passes his again (as he did last time media demanded it) but Biden fails his? What do we do then? Especially if it’s too late to switch candidates?

I’m thinking the biggest issue is we need an age limit at this point for the Presidency. If 35 or so is the age limit to be considered for the presidency, then I’d say 70 should be considered the oldest you can be for you to run 1 term with no terms being run afterwards. Basically, I’m saying a president shouldn’t be allowed to run if they are older than 74 and that age 70 should be the time limit for the final run for office.
Though I’m also feeling a bit leaning towards ages 60-64 as well.

The problem with that is that the Senate would also need to approve that. The median age of Senate members is 65. If you put an upper age limit on the president then the next focus will be on people in the Senate (avg age for House members is quite a bit younger). I don't think 50 senators (I.e. those over 65) are going vote themselves out of a job.
