You did teach us how to forge documents. We just need to rip off sketchograph's design, make it out of metal so it's sturdy, and bolt it down a table
Pantographs have existed for centuries, there are much more durable ones, and they indeed have been used in the creation of forgeries.
Minor problem while you'll get the design right, the strokes wont be. Sign your name quickly on a piece of paper, then look very closely at the "y" in your name. You'll notice that it likely trails off at the end. A pantograph wont easily replicate that whispyness
Matthew Harris some wd40 can make me wisp easy peezy
Usually they are made of wood.

Reduction pantographs are still used for making coin dies, iirc.

A group of people were selling this at school.
Luna Reoma how much were they selling it for?
Well, that's a plastic version of the pantograph. It's a little on the "suck side" because of materials and poor construction (joints tolerances and such), also leverage is a factor inducing twists and bends in plastic sets. I think you should try proportional dividers too, very simple tool more in the "artistic side".

I can definitely see some design improvements that would make this a super cool gadget.
Use metal bracers for stability. Add a clear section where the pin is so you can easily see exactly where the needle is.
Potentially have a small weight that you place around the drawing instrument.
And probably make the needle a ball point.
I feel like that would make for a smoother, effortless experience where you could focus on tracing and not manipulating the tool.
I had one of those when I was a kid - I'm 64 now so shows how long they been going. I now use the smart sketcher which I find really good.

I had to watch this as I was given one of these as a kid (Iâm now 49) and I have used it to create the initial line work using a pencil when doing drawings from photos (4âx6â). I always hold the needle and allow the weight of the pencil to create that line work. I then complete the drawing with other mediums (pencil, pen, paint etc). Fun fact, I was first introduced to the theory of this technique when I watched a docu about am american gold dollar. They showed this massive sculpture that had been made as the base and used a similar, but automated technique to make the mold in which the die would be made. This is a very analogue technique that can have impressive results, assuming the device isn't made out of plastic.
Making your own would probably make it more stable and able to do more things. Worth a go!
