  • Hello everyone, and thank you for joining me in this week's video.
    At the core of my farm is a 40-meter borehole that serves as the heartbeat, providing the homestead with the only source of clear water. This water, gushing from the depths, is pumped directly into the main tank, a small reservoir capable of holding nearly 10 cubic meters. Near to the borehole is what I've fondly dubbed "the well", although it technically functions as a cistern since it relies solely on rainwater for sustenance. Over time, as you might recall from previous videos, I've taken steps to collect some of the rainwater from the rooftops, directing it into this cistern. Unfortunately I hadn't been able to make the most of this stored water. However, exciting changes are now afoot as I embark on the installation of a pump and piping system. This system will enable me to transfer water from the cistern to the primary tank, effectively bridging the gap between two vital water sources. This transformation grants the capacity, when necessary, to redirect this emergency reserve to nourish the trees that grace the farm.
    I'm also currently expanding the drip irrigation system across the homestead, which I recently started, as you might also recall from a previous video. As you might have guessed, the central water distribution point is the main tank. For the top two field terraces, I've already installed a small battery pump, which is sufficient to irrigate the trees situated higher than the tank's water level. As a result, these fields have already a fully functional drip irrigation systems in place! As for the larger terrace located at the cistern level, I'm currently in the process of adding more tubing. There are three more terraces that will require similar attention in the future. Once the project is complete, all this four field terraces will be irrigated solely by atmospheric pressure and gravity. This means I'll only need to open or close the correct tap to irrigate the specific field I desire.
    This endeavor is part of my ongoing journey on this land, as I strive for greater self-sufficiency and harmony with the land.
    In the heart of the farm, where water flows like a silent river of life, I stand a little more prepared to battle against the climate changes and ready to nurture and protect this cherished land.
    Thank you so much for watching.

    Trees are my passion; so I have several suggestions;
    You may want to install a much larger diameter supply line to your manifold. If you are serving three 17mm emitter lines, your supply line should be at least 38 mm to supply all three lines simultaneously. If you expect to add to the manifold - go larger.
    You do not want your emitter right at the tree trunk. Concentrating your watering against the trunk and root flair can cause root rot - (phytophthora) The way to water fruit and nut trees is to have one or more emitters distributed about one third to halfway to the outside edge of the canopy. You can patch the punched opening with a goof plug or a simple wrap of black electrical tape.
    I like the emitter you have chosen. It is less likely to clog with debris from unfiltered water. And it is easy to clean if it does get clogged.
    I would scale the number of emitters to the size of the tree. For instance - if you have a very small tree, one emitter is adequate. For a mid size tree, 2 or 3 emitters distributed under the canopy may be may be adequate. Your largest trees may need 4 or 5 emitters distributed beneath the canopy. This way, each tree gets the right amount of water in a given time period.
    Now that you have a convenient system, you must be careful to avoid overwatering. Trees like deep watering infrequently. For instance, using the emitters scaled to size of tree approach, one hour every 10 days should be adequate in dry conditions. When you are in drought, I would suggest 1 hour every 5-7 days. And in normal moisture conditions, do not irrigate.
    You can split your supply from the sump pump in the cistern into 2 lines with valves if you have to pump irrigation water further up hill. One split goes to the tank and the second split feeds to uphill irrigation network. Simply select the valve where you need the water and plug in the pump. A benefit of a sump pump is that because it is bathed in 55 degree water, they never overheat.
    This is very exciting. You will be SO happy when the next drought arrives and again at harvest time next fall 😊
