- We all love the 16-bit editions of the game, but how does the Master System edition compare? Well, with my recent purchases of the retro console and the Sonic games to accompany it, I decided to make a mini review of Sonic 1! And to be fair, it has a lot of upsides!
Sonic 2 Master System Review is now available: • Let's Review Sonic 2 8...

The SMS games are really underrated. They need more attention.
yea the games look good, its just the controls
Agreed on both comments!
Yes
Agreed
Maybe they can make mobile ports for them like for the 16-bit sonic games well except for sonic 3 they haven’t made that one yet
I have many fond memories of Sonic 1 SMS. The first console I ever owned was the SMS2, with Alex Kidd built in. The first game I ever bought for it, was Sonic 1, and from that moment on, I was hooked as a Sonic Fan. I still love it, as the map, combined with the levels felt like silent story telling - to my young mind. It didn't fell like I was playing a game, but rather, partaking in an adventure.
My very first sonic game I’ve ever played, way back in 1991 when I was 11 years old. I love it and the music
Fun fact.. Janet Jackson's "together again" is the same tune as bridge zone
Neat
She sampled it
Not just Janet Jackson but the bridge zone is basically the Full House theme song.
Love the creativity for *Bridge* Zone
3:04 Holy crap! That teleport was kewl!
I love this game! I played the Game Gear version, but they are nearly identical. It's a lot of fun.
I agree I bought it on 3DS and hours of fun. :)
Hi im subed to you
The Game Gear version is easier in terms of the bosses. Especially in Green Hill, Bridge Zone, and the final boss
FurretMaster 290 I bought it a few years back and I’ve played hours of it as well! I just love this version of the game. :D
@@MokyDB bruh
"In fact, they're the reason why I got into the blue blur." -- me too! I had a cousin with a Master System and I used to love visiting just so I could play Sonic. As much as I love the Mega Drive games, I was a year or two older when I finally got to play them, and they rank a notch lower on the nostalgia scale for me.
The music for the Jungle Zone is often what plays in my head when I'm doing other stuff.
You actually pause the video to read what I meant by "technical snaff"? Well, okay. Basically, the console I ordered worked but the reset and pause button did not. The bloke partially refunded me 10 pound which is nice, but I still wanted it fixed. I took the console apart to see that the internal buttons inside were no longer contacting the metal connections within. I had to order some tactical miniature push buttons and then with the help of my dad and his tools, we pulled out the old buttons and soldered the new ones in. Now, it all works perfectly! ^_^
Why did I waste my time typing all this?
Thanks! I really tired of trying the pause video, even on minimal speed))
Why did I waste my time pausing it just the right time instead of looking her instead
@@workinprogress6779 haah
Thanks, I appreciate this.
I'll say this now Jungle Zone and this games version of Scrap Brain are EASILY two of the BEST BGM's from the classic era
This was the very first video game I ever played and kick started my gaming addiction that is still going to this day! It came bundled with my SEGA Master System II console along with Hang-On and Alex Kidd In Miracle World built in. Sonic 1 on the Master System has it all, the colourful graphics, the fun gameplay, the catchy melodies and an overall fun game that leaves a lasting impression on you and has loads of replayability. I grew up with the PAL version, It's definitely a title better experienced in PAL 50Hz.
The music was by Streets of Rage composer Yuzo Koshiro, i can definitely hear it in Sky Base Zone, Sonic 1 on the MS is actually my favourite Sonic game.
I mean, the whole game was by Yuzo Koshiro
Sonic 1 in a nutshell
Genesis:O
Master System:o
Game Gear: °
The only thing special about the game gear port that is in sonic mega collection plus
@@scott56994 This entire post was a joke about how big their sprites are, not comparing the games but aight

I remember in this version the Chaos Emeralds were hidden in each of the six worlds/levels and NOT IN the special stages. I stumbled across them because I liked to explore the levels
After watching your review, I liked the prologue on how you grabbed your hands on the game and console. Your points were well balanced including original features that felt rewarding (i.e. sign posts at the end of Act 1 and 2). But some flaws that can be messy during gameplay (frame rate drops like in the underwater sections in Labyrinth, and the amount of rings you can retain after taking damage).
Exploring the levels to find emeralds is more enjoyable. The world map before starting a level, and Sonic with a microphone in the credits are nice small touches.
Cool, another giveaway.
Overall, nicely presented as always.
This game's Game Gear variant was my introduction to Sonic as well
I really like this game. In a way, I prefer it to the main attraction.
Jungle Zone 2 still haunts me to this day, but this did make it easier for me when I played the Megadrive/Genesis versions cos I felt like I was drowning in rings.
Brilliant review redhotsonic, looking forward to your next stream. 😁👍
Nice video dude. Keep up the good work
WOWW!!!
I played this in my Master System Super Compact and Master System 3. Good Times!!!
You received my Glorious LIKE!!!
Fact, the logo is off-center on the Genesis too.
By 8 pixels
It's more noticeable in the SMS version though, due to its decreased resolution of 320x224 to 256x192
Custardly23 nuh uh
6:09 I still haven't for the love of Jiminy Cricket figured out how this works 😂😂😂
Damn I love the way you poms talk 😂😂😂
“The logo isn’t even centered properly!”
In fairness, the original Sonic 1 on Mega Drive’s logo isn’t centered properly either.
No shit Sherlock , everyone knows that .
I'm pretty sure they couldn't add background to the title screen because it was already too detailed and had too many colors used at once.
Great review!
I really like these reviews :)
Love it great review! Only thing I would ask is to turn the game volume down a little when your talking =)
I tried this game on an emulator a while ago and I enjoyed it more than the Mega Drive/Genesis version.
*Pauses game and the rings don't stop spinning*
THE RINGS ARE IMMUNE TO TIME AND SPACE! RUN!
Lol
7:50 without all emeralds the cutscene would end here the game doesn’t even ask you to try again!
1:13 You actually paused the video to read what I meant by “technical snaff”? Well, okay. Basically, the console I ordered worked but the reset and pause button did not. The bloke partially refunded me £10 which was nice, but I still wanted it fixed. Thanks!
I hate these one-frame texts. They ruin the flow of the video. Thanks for the transcription!
What a happy man he is after he got the console fixed !
2:33 INSTANTLY thought of Janet Jackson's "Together Again" because that's literally what it sounds like lmao
Nash Coywolf rumours are that she was a fan and "borrowed" the melody! I' m not even joking.
@@stevenfraser81 I wouldn't be shocked! She's a lot like Michael and we know Michael also liked Sonic (and very very likely helped with the music, but that's an obvious parallel if Janet indeed did borrow the melody! =})
Nash Coywolf If you haven't already, you should check out a CZcams channel called The D-Pad. They have a really good video on the Michael Jackson Sonic 3 thing where they show the similarities between music from S3 and later Michael Jackson songs like Stranger In Moscow. Its very interesting, well researched and entertaining. They also do a lot of Sonic Let's Play's on the channel too!
Bridge Zone = "Believe in myself" aka Tails' theme song in Sonic Adventure?
No.
'Believe in Myself' = Bridge Zone.
I paused, less for "technical snaff" more for "I have to know what this text says!"
This was the first game I ever played. I had a master system 2 with the game built in
“but we don't care about that with it's screen crunch and uglier sprites"
turns off my phone running the sonic 1 game gear emulator as I paused the video, a tear running down my face
( I like the game gear version Btw)
God, Sonic 1 Master System is one of my favorite games.
Dang master system is cheap over in the pal regions I paid around $140 for my NTSC master system and I understand that the system is very popular in the USA but it’s a very fun system and I really love it and I am too young to have grown up in the system but hey i love retro collecting
Don't have the Master System version, but the Game Gear version I got on 3DS Virtual Console is my most played Sonic game.
Sadly we never had an rgb standard in america until like 2000. The best we had was s video, but mostly rf and composite.
Ah yes sonic 1 master sistem I remember the good old ages
Of course you did on your master "sistem"
@@brianberry1485 lol you are the first reply after 1 year lol
Yeah I'll be taking that copy of Sonic 2 for the SMS!
Now I just need a master system
EBay For This
I like the 8bit version its a great classic
In terms of gameplay the SMS version was better than the megadrive version
"the emblem isn't centered" I hear?
THE EMBLEM FOR SONIC 1 16 BIT IS OFF CENTERED BY ABOUT 8 PIXELS TO THE LEFT
I wanted sonic on my Wii and I got this one because I didn’t have enough points for the genesis system, so I got this version and beat it.
Well done. 👏 It's an easy game. That was the only real criticism of it when it came out.
Don't I have the highest score in sonic 1 game gear? I got 999,390 without taking a hit
1257100 on the Master system
that's actually pretty high. the only way you can do that is to be fast, get all special stages, 99 rings EXACTLY in every level, taking no damage, getting all emeralds and without dying once.
Hint: Sonic 2 on the Master System is really hard!
It's easy once you get the hang of it.
Yeah but the most difficult (i think) are the Chaos Emeralds (without a guide)
yeah just get the HANG of that hang glider ;)
Every CZcamsr who plays this gets super confused about how 10X rings doesn’t count as enough rings for the special stage, I really don’t know why though. It’s obvious, the ring counter has just 2 digits, and after you hit 100 it just loops.
Sonic 1 for Master System is my personal favorite Sonic-yes, I personally prefer it to Sonic 2 & 3/K on Genesis/Megadrive.
I love the exploration-based gameplay, and charm.
It's funny. The Master System usually has terrible music thanks to its poor soundchip, but this game is an exception... the reason being is because the god known as Yuzo Koshiro composed for this game!
4:52 Wait Til We Tell Em About The Genesis Title Screen
This video deserves a like I did a few videos on the sms Remake for android
Any chances on you making a review of Mobius Evolution? Just wondering :P
3:24 “and both 1 and 2 make you jump” oh… so these controllers are the wii remotes without bluetooth, motion controlls or vibration… good to know
Is it only me that exactly tryed about 25 times to see the text
I think this is the only Sonic game wich give you an result of total points at the end of the game
How was this footage taken? When you first mention the MasterSystem you show a segment with Sonic using a shield, but it has dropped frames.
Master System > Framemeister > Elgato (capture card). It may have dropped frames here and there because my PC died on Sunday morning: twitter.com/redhotsonic_RHS/status/1046355709078765568?s=19
5:31 What happened to the Green Hill music?
My favorite thing about sonic 1 sms is the banging boss music
wasn’t some of the music in here preformed by the band Dreams Come True? Like fro green hill or some other zones ( I know they preformed a full end song for the 16 bit version of sonic 2 called “ Sweet Dreams” and it had lyrics , but the lyrics isn’t in the game just the background music ) am I correct?
5:27 what did you say, hand in your sega badge right now
This was the first videogame I've ever played, when I was like 7. I don't even know where the console came from, or what happened to it after; my parents don't even remember having it.
Either way, I spent a lot of time thinking it was the Genesis game, but it never really matched my memories of it. Until I gave this version a try and started remembering snippets. When I was a kid I never went further than the "stage 7" boss. Which isn't even that far into the game but it's pretty tough. Maybe now that I'm in my 30s I'll actually come back and finish it for real!
Brilliant. I'm reviewing knuckles chaotix
A few weeks ago, while looking for any uploads of the Sonic Gamebooks (the ones from Fantail, like "Metal City Mayhem") I stumbled upon an emulation of Sonic 1 for Game Gear. I ended up playing through Green Hill _and then dying in Act 1 of Bridge Zone and deciding that's enough for today_ (as it was really late, like 11 PM probably) :/
I grew up with the genisis and SMS Sega master system
to me, this game is better than sonic 1 for the mega drive. just flat out better. it's a great game.
Thank you for the epilepsy warning.
4:52 Well, it isn’t centered in the 16-bit version either, so consistency I guess?
Play the sonic 1 SMS version. It’s great and looks and sounds more like the megadrive version. It even has the megadrive zones, marble and spring etc. Very cool!
Honestly, with the exception of the title screen, I can't notice any jailbars in this footage.
Since You "Already" Do A Livestream Of Sonic 1 Master System Version, It's Gonna be so Retro 8-Bit Style!
And Also Sonic 2 And Sonic Chaos. (Maybe)
Well, I've already live streamed all 3 games. However, I never did all chaos emeralds in Sonic 2 in the stream, so I may redo that in the future; we'll see. As for the links for your convinience:

Okay... :\
I always found it weird that sonic unleashed used the credits theme for Mazuri.
I always wished the MS/GG ports were more like the Genesis versions.
Sonic 1 8-bit Jungle Zone really reminds me of Super Mario bros. 2 Overworld theme
I suscribe your channel. A big like
Anyone realize that Bridge Zone sounds like the intro to full house?
I know people who like this game more than the 16-bit one. I can see where they're coming from even though I don't necessarily agree. It is one of the best platformers on the Master System and I really enjoy it. I still think it's the best of the 8-bit bunch though Triple Trouble was very ambitious.
i'm one of those people.
lmao, I always used to get stuck at the jungle zone boss.
My little review, Me and my brother got a second Master system in the mid 90s, with Sonic 1 and then Sonic 2 a bit later, pretty much ALL of my friends had a Mega Drive and Sonic lol, I used to play MS Sonic at home ofc but loved going round to my friends to play Sonic on the Mega drive which was superior in every way IMO, particularly the music. I play both versions on emulators every few years for nostalgias sake, haven't done so in a few years but listening to the Sonic music here makes me realise how much I hated it, I always loved the 2nd levels theme though and typically always died by the Underwater zone so never really heard the music (unless my older brother was playing past then until playing on emulators with the save state (I suck) ... I didn't realise this game was made by a different company, it all makes sense now. IMO no need for anyone other than a die hard fan to play this game vs the Mega Drive, it is inferior in all aspects. Also I had orignally always thought this game came out earlier than the Mega Drive which I was very surprised to learn wasn't the case.. i my mind I was like, why is it so bad then? but the different company and ofc being 8bit all adds up.
Happy birthday sonic 1 sms!!🎂🎂😊
my favorite song from this game is scrap brain
I never played the master system cause I didn't know about sonic until sa2
2:38 Back foul demon!.... Back i say!
the sonic one title screen on genesis is also not centered
4:51 Then look at the Genesis version, too. Can't flaw a version if it's the same with all of them :))
Woah! The game gear version came out on December 28? MY BIRTHDAY IS ON DECEMBER 29TH!!!!!

Jungle Zones Music Kinda Sounds Like Mario
It does Tails
Hearing Jungle Zone reminds me of the athletic soundtrack from New Super Mario Bros. U (at least the beginning samples sound similar but slower).
Sky base act 1 had rings...
9:10 epilepsy warning! Flashing lighting in 3
You’ll hear a bounce SFX when it’s stop...
Are all of the Master System's games the exact same games as on the Game Gear?
Well in sonic 2 they change some of the music traks. Also the sreen resolucion is smller in the game gear vercions. So they have minor diferences. also there are 3 sonic game that were only release in the game gear sonic triple truble (Sonic & Tails 2 in japan) and sonic drift 1 & 2.
It's usually the other way round - GG games are more often versions of the MS games cut down to a smaller screen resolution. Sometimes though they're completely different and of course both systems have exclusive titles.
At the time, the GG was seen as a portable MS. Whilst that's not technically true, the systems are very similar and a large portion of the GG's library are games ported to both systems.
im waiting
sonic 1 16 bit isn't centered properly with its emblem. Also, when you pass 99 rings, the counter resets.
I'm surprised you didn't just buy a Power Base Converter for your Mega Drive. Although with price fluctuations sometimes getting an original Master System is actually cheaper than the converter.
Don't need to. I also have an Everdrive for my Mega Drive which can play Master System games. But I just like to be authentic as I possibly can :)
1:13 well thx dad
You are my favourite Britain youtuber
Sonic 1 was better on the Master System. Bridge and Jungle Zone and the Bonus stages are so much better. And finding the chaos emeralds in level was brilliant.
5:10 excluding scrap brain zone act 3
No wonder I never reached Labyrinth Zone
