I remember being in that dark place, I ran my ass off, gone 3-4 months at a stretch, trying to get our business going. I was sacrificing everything for my wife and kids, and so called friends were telling her that truckers cheat, truckers are dope addicts, telling her I was a part time father and full time trucker. Her and I separated for several months, and I remember contemplating every waking hour... how do I end it, how do I free them from me, I'm the burden. I thought about so many ways to die out here, head on into a bridge abutment, drive it off fancy gap, drive off the bridge on i10 in Louisiana, blow my brains out, and on and on.
Those were the worst times in my life, I finally broke down and told someone and they talked to me around the clock, they pulled me away from the edge and I'm forever grateful. My wife and I remain happily married still, 18 yrs, she fully understands and appreciates the job we do. God Bless you all, my fellow drivers.

No disrespect but if any of you would've been driving back in the day( 60s 70s) you would look at the drivers today and be sick. Back then a driver didn't go hungry..EVER.. A driver broke down on the side of the rd there would be 3 or 4 drivers pull over to help. One driver lost his alternator, a long ways from nowhere. Granddad pulled his extra out of sidebox, helped the guy put it on and gave him a new belt with it. It was 4 days before we got home. A brand new alternator and belt setting on his desk with a big thank you note. Made a life long friend. That's the way it was back in the day. So I don't have much faith in the drivers of today. Oh ya we made a lot more money back then. You laugh but fuel was 39cnts a gallon, and freight was ( depending on what we hauled) was $1.50 to $1.85. Ya there were those that paid less but where we were at it paid good. Not these days all the brokers are nothing but common thiefs and drivers cutting the rate to beat someone else. You have DOT with absolutely no common sense and people running trucking companies that have no clue how to do the job or what it takes to get it done. Don't get me started on the lumpers bullshit. It's actually 100% illegal and if drivers would stand up and say no .. its your freight, you ordered and paid for it, I'm not paying you to take your stuff off my trailer. You can either take it off or sign refused. Then by law the driver gets paid to take it back to where he got it. NO WAY IN HELL WOULD I BE A OTR DRIVER. Little computer telling you when to work n take a break and when to sleep. That's why driver accidents went up ( I think) 38% the first 6 months of elog. Oh hell no.

I am 3rd generation, grandfather drove 60s-80s, uncles drove 80s-2000s, I started in 97. I am absolutely sickened by what passes for a truck driver today. No dignity, no self respect, some look and smell like hammered dog shit. These are not the men I grew up around in trucking. My grandfather would roll in the grave watching these pigs walk in the truckstop wearing pj pants, flip flops and weighing as much as Jabba the Hutt.

My first year in trucking was tough. I was learning the game and I jumped in to leasing within the first 6 months when I knew nothing about running a truck much less a business. I was living the same way this guy was living until I wised up and went back to being a company driver. At least I had a paycheck while I was learning the industry. Now 6 years later I’m making a damn good living and have learned a lot from that experience. Some advice for a new driver is to stay away from any leasing programs for the first year at least. Learn the industry on their dime and not yours. You may think you got the handle on things but you don’t. Be careful with the knowledge you get from a CZcams truck driver. Most only tell you about the highs, they never seem to talk about the lows they went through to get there. A few will but a lot won’t. Always be safe and mindful out here.

For the last 5 days they've been sending me on dummy mission to locations for loads that were already picked up. It's frustrating because im wasting my days not making any money and missing my kids. It wouldn't be so bad if I was at least making money

A man of courage and faith - well done. If you're reading this and have depression, I got you. I've been there. Please reach out for help. Sometimes it's easier to get help from a stranger who is a trained professional. This is what they do, it is their passion. If you've tried everything else and nothing worked, try talking to someone. When you're at the bottom, there is nowhere else to go but up. It's not about looking weak or being judged; it's about investing in yourself.
