😅 Saw this video after driving my VW Corrado G60 today. This is the VW model that got me into VW’s in the first place. Fun fact: the early McLaren F1 has Corrado side mirrors.

I used to work at a used car dealership and we had a G60 and a VR6 on the lot at the same time, it was pretty cool taking them home, back to back, and comparing the way they drove.

I had one in Finland. A 1990 G60 which was first registered in California. The G60 supercharger coupled with a smaller wheel + a proper chip program made it a lot sparkier when it comes to acceleration. But where this vehicle really excels is cornering. You could throw it down corners with unbelievably high speed and even though it has plenty of body roll, it always seemed to come through. Lovely to drive. I still miss it.

As a kid, I remember seeing these in the magazines and wondering “what the heck is it and why would anyone pay $30k+ for a slow VW?”. It’s cool now, but they were too much money at the time for sure.
Great review! Please keep them coming. Longer videos would be awesome.

I'm 47 so I remember when these came out and all the coverage of it in the major car magazines. They basically dubbed it the poor man's Porsche 944.

    • @colinwashington7919
      @colinwashington7919 Před 2 lety +3

Funnily enough I swapped a 944 for a nearly new G60. To be honest it wasn't a lot slower and a lot of fun to drive.

I love the G60, in Canada we got the 1992 B3 Passat sedan and wagon (roughly 500 but I do not have firm numbers) with a G60 and the Syncro AWD system, a viscous coupler at the rear differential with an angle drive off of the passenger side between transaxle and passenger side axle allowing AWD without 3 differentials. Great intro BTW! Cheers!

Had a 1990 in white for ten years… I loved the car and it was totally reliable putting 110k miles on it.
I did all of the service on it and replaced the clutch and brakes etc.
Had the full four point Neuspeed sway bar - anti roll kits.
Had to replace the supercharger with a rebuild exchange unit at 80k - only took an hour and a half.

Thanks for reviewing this relic! I had one that was that “weird” Audi/Porsche metallic brown color! Mine was super luxe with off white leather upholstery BUT, it was a lemon. I ended up getting all of my money back thanks to the Lemon Law bc it was in the shop 23 times in 18 months! It was such a bummer bc it was a pretty sweet ride…when it wasn’t in the shop! I used to listen to Nirvana via cassette tape in that car! 😂
Also, I believe this car was meant to be the Scirroco’s replacement. My neighbor had a red scirroco a few years older than my G60 and they did look pretty similar.

Just sold my vr6 swapped Corrado a few weeks ago I really didn’t want to sell it but I just didn’t have the time to keep fixing on things and not driving it But still a great car no less.. the body is a g60.. fun fact the Corrado shares window switches with one version of Lamborghini not sure which one though.

Lamborghini Diablo. But I think only in the last 2 or 3 years (1998-2001) after Lamborghini was purchased by Audi.

Thanks for making this video. I remember seeing these cars on the road in my early teens and really liking the look of them. They had a very appealing design to me compared to other vehicles VW offered at the time. But by the time I was old enough to get my license and able to afford these cars, they seemed to have disappeared from the market. Now I don’t see them around or that similar unique design on VW cars anymore.

That's really cool you're doing a retro review on the Corrado! I also want to point out, there was a digital oil temp gauge. And also an outside temp monitor. Also, whenever you locked the doors with the key from outside, you could hold the key and it would roll up the windows. I had two Corrado's and modified the rims on both.

I'm surprised you didn't mention that you can see the individual LEDs for all the warning lights. This was back when LEDs were new and cool and rare.
VW does sports compacts weirdly. The Golf is great but everything else wasn't nearly as successful. Maybe because people thought this was a GTI with a sloping roof? They were too expensive to compete in the US. The Scirocco and Polo got sporty versions over in Europe.

I used to own a white Corrado G60.
Absolutely loved it! Sold it to a 16 year old kid who raced it on the ice and totally smashed it! Fortunately the kid didn't get hurt! Made me sick seeing it that way!
I bought an '84 Red Rabbit GTI after that and I actually like driving the GTI better. Most fun car I've ever driven!

No rear seat review. You didn't even try to get back there. To note, the Hyundai Ioniq does share some of the Corrado and Golf GTI design cues.
