  • We drive not a DeLorean. It's a VW Corrado VR6. This is the one with the weird staggered 10-degree v6 motor that is so narrow it only has one head.

    Would love to contact whoever owns this car now. I strongly suspect I purchased it new at Autohaus Lancaster PA in 1992. Traded a Porsche 944 Turbo which was costing me a small fortune to maintain. Owned it until 1995 when my son was born. The VR6 in Polo green with the tan leather and BBS all match up perfectly. The VR6 were pretty rare and even though I moved to Miami years ago I can tell from the video it's in Lancaster. I loved that car.

I have the original Mystic Green painting and there are many forums with the correct color code so he should dig deeper.
    In the EU there are more Corrados but this thing is rare. Finding a stock or close to stock one is almost impossible. I'm really happy that I have mine and I'm sure I'll never sell this baby because I have responsibilities to carry this legend into the future as it is.
    Fun fact: The Corrado was originally called Typhoon (even before it was the Scirocco Mk3.) but GM didn't allow it for some reason and hence it was called Corrado. ;)

    I don't know why americans didn't bought it, but here in Europe Opel Calibra was all the rage of the 90's FWD sports coupe market. You also had Fiat Coupe, Alfa GTV, Peugeot 406 Coupe and Toyota Celica. Europe was spoiled for choice and every car I mentioned looked better then the Corrado. And if you wanted a VR6, then people bought Golf Mk3 VR6 and not a Corrado since it was a few grand more expencive then the Golf. So... there's your answer.

    You forgot to mention one of the biggest reasons that the Corrado didn't sell... This car was priced only a few thousand dollars less than the mentioned Porche 944. If my memory serves me right the Corrado was around $40,000 new. Which at the time was probably inaccessible to much of volkswagens target audience. I agree with most of what you said otherwise though. And as I mentioned in my email my G60 is ready for you to drive whenever you would like to meet the red headed step child of the VW power plants.

    Love these things. I remember when they were new. One of the big problems, and I think the reason they didn't sell well, was they were expensive. About $23,000 when new in 1993. People didn't want to spend that on a VW. Same issue that later happened with the Phaeton.

  • @GeorgePerakis
    @GeorgePerakis Před 7 lety +40

    The VR6 functionally only has one cam on each cylinder, therefore it's a single overhead cam. It's a V6 almost as thin as a Straight 6, but it's still a V6, it still functions like a V6, each cylinder is still not directly in front of the other, therefore it needs a total of four cams on it to have two cams on top of each cylinder and function as a DOHC. That's why we sometimes call proper DOHC V6s "quad overhead cam", because they have two cams on each cylinder bank for a total of 4. Don't get mad at me about this fanboys, the VR6 is still a great motor, it's just not a proper DOHC.

    • @GeorgePerakis
      @GeorgePerakis Před 7 lety +3

      But that's only technically correct. It's false advertising. Yes there may be two cams per cylinder head but that's not what actually matters. In a proper DOHC one camshaft operates the intake and one the exhaust, which is what allows for superior performance. In the Corrado VR6 that is simply not the case. Yes there may only be one cylinder head and therefore two cams per cylinder head, but it's still a V6, it's still separate banks of cylinders, just a lot closer together than usual, and each camshaft is still only operating ONE bank of cylinders, not both, therefore it doesn't actually function like a DOHC. It only has 12 valves. So calling it a DOHC is a complete marketing lie.
      And no, it's not that weird an engine. Again, it's just a V6 with a very narrow angle. It's still a great engine, but it's almost puzzling to me how no one figured they could do that before. And just like all V engines, it's a measure taken to save space, so a proper L6 still has more torque and more potential power, and imo better sound. Great engine for a compact car though, props to VW for making it.

    • @AaronAnonymous
      @AaronAnonymous Před 7 lety +2

      George Perakis If you haven't seen Engineering Explained's video you should check it out. He concludes that it's technically an inline 6. It has the same firing order as an inline and doesn't need a balance that V6 engines do. It also is technically DOHC. It seems difficult to imagine because it seems like there are two banks of cylinders but there is actually only one row of cylinders, just not in a straight line path.

    If the owner thinks his Corrado gets mistaken for a DeLorean a lot, he should try owning a JR120 Isuzu Piazza/Impulse.
    Key comments:
    1. "That's a DeLorean sprayed white"
    2. "It's a Scirocco with a body kit"
    3. "It's a rejected Mk2 Scirocco design that Isuzu bought."
    4. "It's a Scirocco made under license."
    All bollocks. Number 3 is the one that gets trotted out the most; the Piazza was a concept car (the Asso di Fiori) commissioned by Isuzu well before VW even took proposals for the Scirocco MkII. It moved that car's design back in house because Italdesign allegedly wanted too much money. They. are. not. the. same. design. Italdesign was in his 'shit tons of wedges' phase - an although they look similar, the Piazza/Impulse came first and was not bought by Isuzu after VW turned it down.
    Love Corrados, and love VR6 engines. Well, apart from the fact that Lancia made narrow angle V6s years before. They weren't a new thing.

    Unlike just about any other car ever, I can remember the first time I clapped eyes on 1 of these. My eyes popped and my jaw dropped. I must have walked round it 3 times taking in *every* detail. To me, it looked like a cross between a fighter jet and something from Battlestar Galactica, on wheels. It's profile gives the impression that it's so much bigger than it actually is, that it's fat and squat, with that long, sleek bonnet curving down to what surely *must* be a massive, vehicle munching front grille...and yet it's none of those things. It never ceases to surprise me just how narrow this car actually is when you see it from the front or back, because from the side it looks like it's ready to dig its claws in and leap straight into attack speed, devouring the road, other vehicles and the laws of physics, just sitting still.
    I've wanted one of these from that day and I've never regretted buying 1 when I eventually got the chance. For such s narrow car, there's plenty of room inside, even for 2 guys my size sitting next to each other and the driving experience...WOW!!!
    I *do* have (only) 4 small complaints though...
    1) The front seats. Recaro's Expert L would be a MUCH better choice in my opinion.
    2) It could do with a Golf 4Motion drivetrain to deal with all that torque.
    3) The compressed air operated central locking system *HAS* to go.
    4) MORE POWER heh heh heh. Preferably a supercharger, but a big, fat turbo will do :-)

      "Shooting-brake originated as an early 19th century British term for a vehicle used to carry shooting parties with their equipment and game. The etymology of the term brake is uncertain; initially a chassis used to break in horses, and subsequently used to describe a motorized vehicle." always do your research.

    Now I want a Corrardo with a VR6. Thanks Mr. regular for adding yet another car to the unending list of cars I want but will never get.
