    A mid-ninetys Dakota v8 has those mini starters factory, you can get those much cheaper than the ones sold as mini starters. Hope this helps somebody save money. Also they fit both small and big blocks.

    Fantastic video! I’d like to see more of these, actually. You make a great point: it’s one thing to enjoy drag racing, but it’s another altogether to be a successful bracket racer. Reminds me of the difference between recreational shooting and training. Both can certainly be fun, but one involves more purpose, structure, science, and discipline. They are both both great, but should not be confused with one another. Bracket racing is a niche you should share more.

    Great vid! And I agree 💯 for bracket racing consistency is the key! And traction is the best way to be consistent. Do everything the same every time, after your car is set on kill, to get the same time everytime. Then you just have to cut a light. Lol. Good stuff bro!

    • @JustMoparJoe
      @JustMoparJoe  Před 2 lety +2

      Thanks bud. I have been following your channel since the start. I definitely left some comments when you were playing with converter stall and launch Rpms. I’m definitely no expert in bracket racing by any means, but my dad and I were track champions with our mopars from 2010-2015. I could see what was working for us and what others were doing. You can attest, like I did, my car used to win way more races than my skill ever did. I see guys that have to run a drag slick, or guys that have to have a “dual purpose” car that’s street friendly and track ready. Or even guys who run a tight converter because they want to drive Monday through Friday, then race Saturday. It can all be narrowly done, but they’re competing against the guys with tube chassis cars, widest slicks they can fit, and best race converters on the market. It becomes a game of skills vs. bills, and the 💰usually wins!

    Agreed!! My last "race" car was actually also my daily. But after a year of driving to work, and weekends at the track, I took it up a notch. Dumped the column shift for a B&M rachet, and put slicks in the trunk. Besides gaining a second, putting me into the mid- but mostly high 11s, my times started becoming much more consistent (thats relative as im just an amateur LOL). But even with variances in temperature, track condition, cars overall happiness that day, whether i was napping at the light, etc, my times grouped into about a .3 window, where beforehand, my times were shotgunned over nearly a whole second!! I think the slicks were the biggest part, as Id previously had to "pedal" the car well into 2nd but the shifter def helped too!!!

    Thanks for the tips!
    I use to do a lot of bracket racing back in the '70s but haven't done any since then. I'm retired now and there is a drag strip about an hour away so I'd like to get back into it.
    I have a decent running all stock '79 Corvette with L48 and T-350 with a shift kit. The car weighs about 3500 pounds and has a 3.55 rear end gear. It's an extra car that I don't drive much so thought it might make a good bracket car.
    I'm thinking I'd rip the smog stuff off and go with some aluminum heads, cam, intake, carb, distributor and ignition. I have a set of Hooker headers for it. Then maybe a 4.10 gear and high stall converter. I'd run slicks as it would be a dedicated strip car.
    It probably runs high 14's now but would like to get it into 12' or better but make it bullet proof and consistent.
    Is there a bracket drag race forum where I can talk with other racers?
    Thanks.

    A spraggless torque converter will help keep the times consistent. Many high stall converters have a weak stator sprag, the slippage is inconsistent and so are the pass times.

      Thanks! I’m a big believer in letting a converter flash up into the power band. If you have good traction, then you can stall it just enough to smooth out the idle(maybe 1,500 rpm). Make a pass and then add a few hundred rpm, watching for 60’ changes and your downtrack MPH. To be competitive, finding the sweet spot for your launch is more important than squeezing every last second out of it.

    Most important (IMO) is have a routine. Do the same thing every time you pull into the staging lanes. Tire pressure, engine temp, burn out time, trans temp, staging depth. KNOW YOUR CAR. Keep good, thorough records. Make ONE change at a time. Bracket racing is about consistency

    • @JustMoparJoe
      @JustMoparJoe  Před 3 lety

      Absolutely! My old local track would have races every Sunday. It was almost the exact same time between races. I go to different tracks and they run 6 classes in a night with anywhere from 12-40 cars in each class. It becomes hectic and hard to keep the car temp regulated.

    • @paulblumhardt3827
      @paulblumhardt3827 Před 3 lety +1

      @@JustMoparJoe Controlling temps when you're going rounds and cool down times are shorter is a problem. This is where test&tune sessions are very important (knowing your car). If you know your 60ft slows when the trans temp is 50 degrees hotter than normal, you can push the tree a little harder, change front tire pressure or stage a little deeper. Likewise, knowing who your car responds to DA changes, or dropping pressure on the slicks 1/2 pound because the track has cooled as the evening goes along.

    • @paulblumhardt3827
