  • Thanks to our supporter Linda for this request! We haven't listened to Supertramp in forever and that's a shame because this was GREAT! So different then "Bloody Well Right" might as well a be a new band! I really enjoyed this though.

Yes, a superb album without a single filler song. I've known it since I was very young and the consistent quality in every aspect of the music - from songwriting and vocals to production - is just astonishing. "Asylum" is arguably the greatest rock song ever about sanity and insanity, the experience of being close to someone who is mentally unstable and the sometimes deceptive borders between these two states of mind - the only possible competition would be "Shine On You Crazy Diamond".

@@L33Reacts They had done two previous albums, sponsored by a Dutch millionaire who liked the band - those albums didn't make any major impact at all but CRIME was their big break, both artistically and commercially. Another of the Rolling Stones top fifty prog albums, Hero and Heroine (#44) is an album by one of my all time favourite bands The Strawbs. Hey Man, you are really in my wheelhouse now. Supertramp and Pink Floyd are tied (for me) as the all time greatest bands ever. The musicality, musicianship and scope of the abilities just puts them a step about everyone else. Supertramp is more keyboard based than PF, but the melodies and harmonies of instruments and vocals are unmatched, in my opinion. I was fortunate to see Supertramp live, twice….almost 30 years apart….and both concerts were phenomenal. The first time was in 1974 on their first North American tour. They did this whole album COTC. Hey had an incredible sound and light show (like PF) and the guy on the soundboard was the studio tech that recorded the album. Keep em coming, I’ll be here. Hi from Canada 🇨🇦🎶🎸😎

@@L33Reacts - Speaking of Crisis, one of my favorite songs from that album is a lesser known track called "Another Man's Woman." If anyone recommends you to watch the live performance of that song first, please don't do it!
Rick Davies kills the piano playing solo on the outro, but the studio version is better. In the live version, it has all the great energy that you'd expect from a live performance, but the way he alters the piano improvisation at the end is disappointing to me. I like the live performance a lot... I just wouldn't start anyone there.

The band has numerous great songs, ranging from Progressive Rock to Pop with a Prog twist, and most of them are even better than this song. They even have epic Progressive songs, my favorite of which is the powerful song about Churchill, "Fool's Overture," an amazing song that goes from melancholy and wistful to powerful and driving, taking the listener on a uniquely captivating Prog journey. • @Manageode
      @Manageode Před 4 měsíci +2

Annie Lennox has a ton of original hits, but one of my favorites of hers is actually a cover of a song from about 1971. The Lennox cover has better production, and powerful vocals. Annie doing harmonies. Oh... and lots of harmonica. I always loved it when the Eurythmics (her earlier band) added harmonica. The original version of the song had a good sound for in '71, but feels too dated now. imo, its vocal arrangement is a couple of hairs too close to the Bee-Bop Era, for the serious subject matter. The song is "It's a Thin Line Between Love and Hate".
That Annie Lennox CD is all covers and I love what she does to the songs.

Enjoyed your video! I'd recommend just listening to the complete album in full. However some of my favourites would be "Rudy", "School" and "Asylum". If you are interested in that, most of this album is also able to be seen live. As the band has released a concert film from Paris in 1979, easy to be found on CZcams.

Rick is underestimated in regards to his organ playing. Check out the masterful way he bleeds into Roger's weeping guitars?

This was a perfect end to the album, after the songs that had come before.... This album was one of those that EVERYONE had as the time.... it was huge in the UK... Keep on Rocking.

I can see why people loved this album so much and still Do. Just from this track alone. Fantastic

If you listen closely you can hear as it fades out with the harmonica intro of the first track 'School'. Are you listening up there, Mum?

"Dreamer" was the other hit other than Bloody Well Right from this album, but "School" and the other 5 songs on this album are like Crime of the Century, full of tempo and time signature changes and amazing transitions. And they're all full of quirky instrumentations, and is one of the best produced albums you'll ever hear. If you want another banger that lasts over 7 minutes, try "Rudy". You really should react to this whole album in one sitting. The whole thing is a great vibe, if a little dark at times, but it's all unique and gorgeous music you'll never forget. It's not really a concept album, but listening to whole thing does take you on a very specific journey to many wild and wonderful places that are very emotional. A one-of-a-kind record.

Saw them at the Texas jam Dallas cotton bowl. I think it was 1978.

A lot of Supertramp was pure pop, but they definitely had their prog moments. My recommendation would be "Fool's Overture" off the album of the same name - at ten minutes, probably the closest they ever came to making a prog "epic."

You have GOT to react to some Soft Machine. All of their drummers were incredible, and I think you'd appreciate a lot of different aspects of the music.
    I suggest "Out-Bloody-Rageous" from Third

I played Supertramp until the LPs wore thin. A fabulous group with loads to explore. We used to sing their song Bloody Well Right at the top of our voices because it gave us the chance to swear "legitimately". 😊

Bob Siebenberg delivers in this somg one of the most brilliant and tasteful drum part thatI have ever hear, but it seems to me that his contribution to this song is always under the radar. I have very rarely heard a drum part that is so perfect for a song.

Hi my man - great British band, terrific musicians and so innovative! Who'd thought this was possible back in the day? It's not for the 'tik-tok' listeners with attention span of a gnat - this music is for people who love great music, great song-writing skills and, best of all, great musicianship. As you obviously do! Good to see you again buddy - keep smiling!

  • @mikewoodrow5878

Yeah, man. If you’re a drummer, ya gotta love Bob Siebenberg’s understated drum work - ghost notes, tasty fills, unexpected rolls, a traditional grip player - really holds down the bottom end nicely with Dougie Thompson on bass. On the first listen, it seems a pretty simple tune - listen again and concentrate on the build-up of the drums in the second half of the song- there’s a lot going on.
PS: You asked for a recommendation so, I’d say go with Rudy or Another Man’s Woman. Peace from Toronto!

In concert, as the dramatic piano starts, a screen behind the band shows space... and gradually a pinpoint draws nearer and nearer... growing into something almost familiar... (No Spoilers! lol)
It is not really a concept album, but it is often recommended that it be experienced as a concept album by listening to it in one or two sittings because they often have interesting transitions between songs. Particularly iconic is the segue between the first track, "School", and "Bloody Well Right". ;-]

A fabulous album (and song) but then again all from their classic period are great. If you only did this one and Bloody Well Right only you're missing on the awesome Hodgson songs. In for a treat, no doubt :)
