I’m with you Weather Stuff I always feel so alone in garrys mod needing an Npc to accompany me because i don’t have friends willing to play with me lol.
I always thought about playing garry's mod alone as "lonely god syndrome", you can create and destroy whatever you want but you will never be able to create something to comfort your lonelines...
No it's more like being a god but everything you create is in a specific way like if I could create humans just thinking about it but all of them are the same person and has no personality.
The fact that you can hear the city hustling yet you can't see anyone no matter where you go is terrifying. You know that they are out there somewhere, you can hear them, but you just can't seem to find anyone.
It's still amazing that Garry's Mod is more terrifying for me than other horror games because this game isn't supposed to scare us but is able to do so only with its base engine, maps, and overall ambiance. Jumpscares and creepy easter eggs are just additional ways to scare us.
Horror games aren't really scary because you already know that it's supposed to scare you, therefore you see it coming. But games that are made to not be horror are sometimes the scariest. Idk how to explain it.

to be honest i've never felt this feeling and never got creeped out whilst playing but I could see why people would get the goosebumps whilst playing alone
yeah same. i think the people who experience this kinda don't really share the same perspective i do. obviously there's nothing there. but for me i find that while many people think the nothingness is a characteristic of the map or whatever, i think of it differently. i'm essentially making my own experience. the map feels lonely because you haven't really populated it and given it that life. like obviously if there's nothing it's gonna feel lonely. but once you put down some NPC spawners and have them go to war with eachother and whatnot it's really not.

I think the main reason we get uncomfortable in this game is because of 2 things: 1.) When our environment goes silent for seemingly no reason, that's usually because there is a predator nearby, which is why many of us find silence freaky and why we tend to copy that silence so as to not draw attention to ourselves. In fact, this paranoia is the reason many of us like to keep TVs/Music on when doing other things. 2.) We're social creatures that are extremely vulnerable to attack from predators when away from our group. We're easy pickings without buddies and our subconscious knows it, causing us to get paranoid and jumpy since our only option when attacked alone is to run and hope that whatever is trying to make you its dinner is slower than you. We literally have little to no natural defense against predators.
That's actually a really great theory, thanks. I must say tho that now these maps give me nostalgia rather than other things (besides the fact that developping clostrophobia and agoraphobia also replaced the discomfortability lol)
This just shows how amazing valve's source engine is when it comes to it's atmosphere. They created such an unforgettable, but unexplainable atmosphere with Half Life 2.

Whenever I see a shot of that map that, aside from a random structure in the middle of it, is literally just a barren expanse, I feel like at any time, some unsightly creature will come barreling from the distance and kill you in a split second from when you can see it coming over the hills.
Everytime I wanted to create a gmod video/sfm or whatever, I always pause midway, cause I feel this sudden feeling of uncomfort, like something anomaly is watching me, like im not truly alone, even though im in a single player world... The source engine is easily my favorite of all time. I actually find it’s uncanny creepiness to be comforting personally. Probably has to do with all my positive nostalgia associated with playing Half-Life 2 as an impressionable teenager.
I remember being on the construct map (idk what it's called, the internet was unhelpful but it's the one with the lake thing and the odd reddish building that's super dark inside and a big expanse of grass) and I remember going into the building as a kid and trying to make my way through the maze of doors and darkness. I just left because I couldn't shake the feeling something was following me. Freaked me out more than anything else I can remember.
I honestly think this might be a phobia of empty maps. Back in 2010 when I had no internet I remember feeling at unease playing on empty modern warefare 2 maps when I was a kid. I personally became paranoid because I always wondered what if I seen someone move around the map. That thought creeped me out. Same feelings goes for some other games.
When I was a kid and bored I used to go on bo3 and go onto the multiplayer maps on custom games and just being alone in that empty map gave that eerie feeling and you explained It perfectly, I know that doesn't have anything to do with gmod but it is like that

Minecraft doesn't have this same amount of creepyness because the constant music playing in the backround (most of which is made to be calming) Gmod however, doesn't have a soundtrack. I can’t even play gmod alone without feeling like something or someone is watching me. It a weird feeling and some of the map is actually said to be haunted which added more reason why I only have like 4 hours on it.
Its just eerie when alone and I don’t even know why and it feels like anything could happen, you are alone in your own world that looks beautiful and sounds lively but in reality its empty and I feel scared to play alone so I don’t play at night EVER
When i play hames like this in singleplayer and i’m alone there, i sometimes feel like i’m about to get jumpscares. Of course just some background music can fix that, but when it’s silent, or an ambient neutral or creepy soundtrack, that fear happens.
I felt no fear just by listening to the city sounds and when I soon get a pc and download this game, I'm going to summon alot of General Grievous vs Megatron's.
Gmod is less scary when you making npc battles or try convert random map into "adventure map". The most scarrier thing is when you die and mom walks to your room and see your furry half naked shark girl playermodel (Gladly never happened to me)
Make a battle with some high health enemy’s and allies so it looks like a war is happening and would probably convince your brain that everyone else but us are alive

Every time I play with my friend it eventually ends in either ever TNT block spawning more lit TNT, or everything in the world gets smited on every tick at the same time. _Or I summon eggs on someone and every time it spawns a chicken it will hit it with arrows_
the maps i play on feel like a liminal space to me, they give the weird vibes of like the backrooms, feeling of being watched, loneliness, and just like another type of vibe (if you stare at any open area in a map, you might get this weird type of vibe) i cant explain all mixed together, really good way to scare the living sh-

I played gmod for hours after my cat died, the empty catharsis of loneliness was what I needed for the indulgence of sadness at that point. everytime i start up gmod or load a map i will always have a question in mind such as "are we in backrooms" "how did we get here" "why is the character have 0 emotion" "whats the phys gun and how he get it?" "how did he spawn things" "whats the paper on the tool gun?" "are we actually going there or escape there?" "the paper is a plan maybe the protagonist actually going to escape but failed?" "or maybe we are going on the place on the paper and succeeded?" and many more
i get this feeling in almost every singleplayer game. maybe because i have anxiety, maybe because i just overthink. im not sure, but i can never shake that feeling when playing singleplayer games.
Same I feel the complete opposite of creeped out. Empty gmod maps are calming compared to hopping on a darkrp server and getting constantly micspammed.
The worst thing I believe is the atmosphere, I love it but when you play allow and hear the cars driving or people walking or talking it jus weird hear that because no one is there... or is there someone with you but you don’t know that?
Definitely the latter. If you see something horrifying. You're more likely to know what to do. (Usually run if possible) But the tension of thinking something is watching you is so much worse. Cause your own mind works against you in every possible way. You make it far worse than it ever could be on its own.
I've said this before, it's my personal theory that GMod is secretly the sequel to Half-Life where Gordon accidently managed to rip a hole in the fabric of reality which caused every other media universe to spill into the HL universe, which is why you can spawn pretty much anyone or anything.
I always tend to have music playing in the background when I'm on Gmod. I think the main reason it's so scary to me is how quiet it is, at least in single player.
I feel like good should have a online multiplayer, that way we can always, well, not be alone with npcs and feel safe, and there’s the feeling about nextbots always following you and stalking, waiting to jumpscare you.

0:29 Well, the scary thing about that is the paradox between what you hear and what you can see. This is an empty town with no life and no movement in sight, it's just you. While the background sound and the many huge seemingly intact houses tell you the opposite, that there is actually a lot going on. It creates a feeling of loneliness, in a place where it shouldn't be like that in the first place, and this is where the scare factor comes from, along with the sound itself, as you already explained.

i actually managed to overcome the fear by not watching horror related stuff wile or just before playing and honestly when you mess around more or get concentrated in what your doing then its also gone!
The odd thing is I only had this feeling as I got older, when I was young I put thousands of hours into this games singleplayer and never had that feeling.
The same applies to Minecraft I spawn in a world as a kid and I have so much fun But now I feel like something is watching me which is even scarier when you have scopophobia - the fear of being watched

I think gm_construct is one of the top creepy maps out there, like the darkness... what awaits u in the darkness, the fear of being watched by a dark figure, a city that had many people now its abandoned forever, only you or maybe... someone else in there that you didn't know existed
I remember playing it at my friends house when i was 8, I remember it being soo unsettling. Havent played Gmod since then yet I still sometimes have weird dreams being on a green field alone that reminds me of the Gmod lot.
whenever i play on singleplayer, i always play on flatgrass, so i can see anything. i dont like playing on maps like big city or darkrp when im alone. the idea of having limited vision and a sense of being alone but not alone at the same time gives me the chills.
What always creeped me out is when I would go in a map which was used for deathrun or prop hunt. I was really familiar with people being in the maps with me but when I would load it up on a Singleplayer instance something just didn’t feel right. The sound effects of people being there but not physically really wasn’t right.
When im alone on a server, i use it as an opportunity to do the things I'm not allowed to do when I'm on. I would explore the whole map and find new places.
As someone who has never played gmod, i have always felt as though i have seen gmod maps either in real life or in my dreams, some maps i have never seen in my life or my dreams but they just feel so familiar.
Its a combination of being alone and the pang of nostalgia that becomes more bittersweet the older you get. I remember first playing it when I started high school, that was 15 years ago. The creepiest part for me is having thoughts of how much time has gone by, how much time I've wasted, friends I no longer talk to who I used to play Gmod with and a bunch of other feelings. I suppose it feeds into the fact that Gmod at its core, including classic maps, haven't changed after all this time but so much has changed in my own life. It's scary to me for those reasons.
honestly the creepiest thing that happened to me on gmod is i was doing an npc war where poison zombies were coming out of the dark room attacking rebels, i was on top of the building attacking from above when the zombies prepared to throw. i was like “oh they cant get me” but then i get attacked by a poison headcrab that flew up to me
It isn't creepy!, people have an expectation of what takes place on a map. When their expectations aren't met they form idea's about why the map is like this. often overlooking the games elements and focusing on something trivial. The feeling of being alone on a map which is clearly a habitable space can be daunting to people who are used to doing so with other people.
Same feeling when playing Tony Hawk games or really a lot of games where you freely wonder around, where it’s you in some desolate city/area. Definitely needed the radio on to keep me sane lmao
I was playing gm_mallparking, which was a map set in basically an underground mall parking spot, with a few shops and whatnot. I was having fun and was all alone, and none of the ambience was getting to me as I have over 500 hours in Gmod. And then a door closed.

Sometimes the npcs I spawn in will shoot at nothing and it freaks me out.

theres a secret gnome in that map, where if you hit it, it will scream at you

When there is a bunch of people in a server, its a wacky and fun game.
But when you're alone, its a serious and creepy game.

I can’t even play gmod alone without feeling like something or someone is watching me. It a weird feeling and some of the map is actually said to be haunted which added more reason why I only have like 4 hours on it.
I have over 5000 hours on it and I just cant play alone i feel like something is watching me too
I have 300 hours of just sandbox single player and even then I had to constantly spawn NPCs to get rid of that eerie feeling lol
Its just eerie when alone and I don’t even know why and it feels like anything could happen, you are alone in your own world that looks beautiful and sounds lively but in reality its empty and I feel scared to play alone so I don’t play at night EVER

that was the same feeling i got playing the minecraft tutorial worlds.
When i play hames like this in singleplayer and i’m alone there, i sometimes feel like i’m about to get jumpscares. Of course just some background music can fix that, but when it’s silent, or an ambient neutral or creepy soundtrack, that fear happens.
I felt no fear just by listening to the city sounds and when I soon get a pc and download this game, I'm going to summon alot of General Grievous vs Megatron's.
Gmod is less scary when you making npc battles or try convert random map into "adventure map". The most scarrier thing is when you die and mom walks to your room and see your furry half naked shark girl playermodel (Gladly never happened to me)

the maps i play on feel like a liminal space to me, they give the weird vibes of like the backrooms, feeling of being watched, loneliness, and just like another type of vibe (if you stare at any open area in a map, you might get this weird type of vibe) i cant explain all mixed together, really good way to scare the living sh-

I played gmod for hours after my cat died, the empty catharsis of loneliness was what I needed for the indulgence of sadness at that point. It's funny to think an entire side of CZcams gaming was built on gmod gamemodes, prop hunt funny moments are at the roots of CZcams's biggest creators, and it came from a game engine built to be as eery as possible

I always worried about my friends when they leave for long periods of time.
everytime i start up gmod or load a map i will always have a question in mind such as "are we in backrooms" "how did we get here" "why is the character have 0 emotion" "whats the phys gun and how he get it?" "how did he spawn things" "whats the paper on the tool gun?" "are we actually going there or escape there?" "the paper is a plan maybe the protagonist actually going to escape but failed?" "or maybe we are going on the place on the paper and succeeded?" and many more
i get this feeling in almost every singleplayer game. maybe because i have anxiety, maybe because i just overthink. im not sure, but i can never shake that feeling when playing singleplayer games.

Definitely the latter. If you see something horrifying. You're more likely to know what to do. (Usually run if possible) But the tension of thinking something is watching you is so much worse. Cause your own mind works against you in every possible way. You make it far worse than it ever could be on its own.

I've said this before, it's my personal theory that GMod is secretly the sequel to Half-Life where Gordon accidently managed to rip a hole in the fabric of reality which caused every other media universe to spill into the HL universe, which is why you can spawn pretty much anyone or anything.

I always tend to have music playing in the background when I'm on Gmod. I think the main reason it's so scary to me is how quiet it is, at least in single player.
I feel like good should have a online multiplayer, that way we can always, well, not be alone with npcs and feel safe, and there’s the feeling about nextbots always following you and stalking, waiting to jumpscare you.

I think gm_construct is one of the top creepy maps out there, like the darkness... what awaits u in the darkness, the fear of being watched by a dark figure, a city that had many people now its abandoned forever, only you or maybe... someone else in there that you didn't know existed

What always creeped me out is when I would go in a map which was used for deathrun or prop hunt. I was really familiar with people being in the maps with me but when I would load it up on a Singleplayer instance something just didn’t feel right. The sound effects of people being there but not physically really wasn’t right.

When im alone on a server, i use it as an opportunity to do the things I'm not allowed to do when I'm on. I would explore the whole map and find new places.
As someone who has never played gmod, i have always felt as though i have seen gmod maps either in real life or in my dreams, some maps i have never seen in my life or my dreams but they just feel so familiar.
Its a combination of being alone and the pang of nostalgia that becomes more bittersweet the older you get. I remember first playing it when I started high school, that was 15 years ago. The creepiest part for me is having thoughts of how much time has gone by, how much time I've wasted, friends I no longer talk to who I used to play Gmod with and a bunch of other feelings. I suppose it feeds into the fact that Gmod at its core, including classic maps, haven't changed after all this time but so much has changed in my own life. It's scary to me for those reasons.

honestly the creepiest thing that happened to me on gmod is i was doing an npc war where poison zombies were coming out of the dark room attacking rebels, i was on top of the building attacking from above when the zombies prepared to throw. i was like “oh they cant get me” but then i get attacked by a poison headcrab that flew up to me

It isn't creepy!, people have an expectation of what takes place on a map. When their expectations aren't met they form idea's about why the map is like this.

I was playing gm_mallparking, which was a map set in basically an underground mall parking spot, with a few shops and whatnot. I was having fun and was all alone, and none of the ambience was getting to me as I have over 500 hours in Gmod. And then a door closed.
