Because what used to be a sleepy town in the 80s, back when most homes didn't have central air because you didn't need it, is now unaffordable, crowded, hot, with way more crime. The median income in the Springs is now $141,000, which was unheard of before. It's become the next Boulder, where only the very well-off can afford to live here anymore. A lot of us don't feel that a few cool new restaurants is worth the dramatic change.

Interesting. We just got here from Florida. We did our research and visited the area for several weeks before pulling the trigger. We lived in Orlando, Florida before - there certainly aspects of Florida we enjoyed but the reality is for us the summers were brutally hot and humid. July 3rd it was 97F with 97% humidity - the "feels like" temp was over 120F. That's hotter than a sauna you can't leave. That wasn't a one-off day either - very common in the summers. We considered moving to Tampa, but then you have to deal with hurricanes every few years - perhaps a big one every couple decades. I will say the winters were glorious. Then all the issues with increased property insurance and crazy traffic.
No place is perfect. The best places to live rarely stay that way for long because so many people move there. Remember when California was a paradise? High taxes and cost of living ruined the dream. Now Californians are fleeing their state for other places like Idaho, Colorado, Texas, and even Florida. Now you have folks joke about _their state_ being "full" - or telling Californians to go ruin someone else's state. Anyone that tells me Colorado is full hasn't been to Limon - it still looks empty to me.
For better or worse, the Springs is growing and will continue to do so. It's still a great place to live - but we need to have smarter growth to remain that way - which means getting ahead of the issue instead of being reactive.
I do advise anyone wanting to move here to rent for 3-6 months over the winter months. If you are good with that, you are golden.

His job is based out of Denver but we cannot find ANYWHERE to live in Denver that is not only in our budget but NOT under contract immediately. So the hour commute versus the cost is absolutely worth it.

  • @Mewpasaurus

We moved here because of my husband's job. Living on base was not a choice because of the insane wait (18+ months when we moved here) at all of them. We had no choice but to rent (which sucks) because all of the decent homes were well over our budget. There are NO livable houses in this city for under 400k now. And unfortunately, with the increase on mortgage rates and interest rates, it pretty much priced us out of everything. Add to that that there are no decent paying jobs here unless you have a security clearance or connections.
There's also issues with the homeless and panhandlers, car theft, violent crime and scams in this city that I haven't encountered any other place I have lived in the U.S.

What you are describing is happening to a lot of places. In fact, everywhere I go that is either naturally attractive or has a great culture is experiencing overpopulation. It is especially hard on those who can remember what it was like 20 years ago or more. I would still move to the Springs if I could. DFW has a LOT more people and very little for those who love the outdoors. I know to someone who lives in your city that it now feels crowded and different (not in a good way). Yet, the Springs remains a breath of fresh air to someone like me.

The Springs is way over rated. Moved to Fremont County and work in The Springs. 7 years. Pros. Mountains, climate, outdoor rec. That's it. Everything else is sub par. Not quite 1 million people in the area. Lacking bars and restaurants. Let's talk about drugs, theft and in general lack of accountability. I've lived in every region except the NE. This is the scumiest population I've ever experienced. Even working at fortune 500's nothing functions as it should. Road rage. Look up the number of unsolved murders as a direct result of road rage. This goes along with hit and runs. It's the norm here. The veterans, i am one, come across as you owe them something. There's spots of sanity in Colorado. The tourist towns and the more dense Hispanic community's. The front range in general with The Springs leading the way suck.

Life is short. If you don't like the area - move. Too expensive to move? Sell all your crap and hop on a bus. That's what I did - but I moved _to_ the Springs. Still relatively warm, decent people compared to other places in Colorado. I'm sorry if this hasn't been your experience. Not exactly Southern hospitality but still good folks. The South isn't what it used to be either (both good and bad). I'm not a vet, but my father is. We owe them a debt of gratitude for our freedom. Any time I find out someone served in the armed forces, I thank them for their service. I think that is reasonable.

Colorado Springs is great. The weather is by far the best I lived in, and I've lived in many. In 1- max 2 years you get fully accommodated with the altitude, sooner if you exercise. All during winter there are many days you can get out in shorts and tee shirt. The summer is moderate, and you don't need air conditioning like in upstate NY, or Florida to name a couple of places. This woman has no idea, just badmouthing one of the best places to live in since everything gets a bit passe after a couple of decades. You want a worst place, go to Denver, but even there is better than most of the nation. No bugs and no mosquito in Colorado Springs too. The only thing bad here is the lack of a beautiful ocean and lack of a local ski slope, but if you truly are into sports and outdoors, Colorado Springs is still the best place to be.

Why aren't we talking about grocery price's? Car Insurance? Rent? You know necessities of life. Not to mention water source's which I think springs come from mountain runoff. It's reasonable here in the Midwest and I can't even imagine what prices are there now.

I think y'all are gonna be next. The Midwest is now one of the last affordable places in the US for the middle class. Folks can sell their homes here, buy a house outright there and still have plenty to live on before they even get a job. The middle class can actually thrive there. Heck, they can even homestead there. Problem is, that's gonna do what it did here - drive your prices up and congest everything.
The only reason you may avoid it is climate change. Even when I lived in NE from 1991-2000, phew those hot humid summers. Then the arctic winds that would blow through your bones in the winter lol. It's only gonna get hotter so it may not be the most popular destination for the long-run. But for the next decade or so? It might be.

I live in Greccio Housing (non-profit affordable housing). 10 years ago, I applied, was approved, signed the lease and moved in within 10 days. Now? They have a year-long wait list at minimum. Even my one bedroom apartment, in a 1980s building without central air, that needs more and more repairs each year, the rent's gone from $450 in 2014 to $880 this year. This is _not_ a building appreciating in value lol so I don't get it. All I know is we don't have enough affordable housing.
I was shocked to learn our median income is $141,000 here. We have a huge upper middle and rich class, a large lower-class and poor population and then a sliver of a middle class. I don't see how this is sustainable, especially as climate change worsens weather patterns. More and more people move here because it's mostly pleasant for now. But as weather patterns change, as our summers get hotter and our winters have less snowfall, the wildfires will just get worse. Those same rich people and industries that moved here because it's nice are just gonna move somewhere else. The same cycle will repeat in another town, they'll have their city transformed...and those that can't afford climate migration will be left with their remnants.

Colorado in general sucks now that it went blue and the weather in Colorado Springs sucks

    • @calkelpdiver
      @calkelpdiver Před 5 měsíci +9

It isn't because Colorado became more Blue in its politics. If anything it is a good thing then we don't have to deal with the MAGA idiots (except Boebert, and she's gone come November). We have enough fun dealing with all the Evangelicals in Colorado Springs. That all started in the late 90's when James Dobson and Focus on the Family came to the Springs. Ruined a great little military and liberal arts college (Colorado College) town.
Colorado has always been a Moderate state, a mix of Cosmopolitan and Rural Cowboy culture. I grew up in Colorado, my wife is a native of Colorado Springs, and what I've seen as far as changes over the last 50 years is crazy. We have always had issues with Water and infrastructure. There have always been issues with urban sprawl, even my home time (in NW Denver area) went from 35-40k people in 1987 to over 100k by 2000 because of companies coming to Colorado and people moving here for once was affordable houses (that all ended in 2010).
And yeah, the weather at times can suck. But the vast majority of the time it is pretty good. And what do you expect, we get the four seasons here, and you do eventually get used to the altitude. Plus, it is a dry climate here. Once you get west of the Mississippi the humidity drops hard.
Finally, yes Colorado has lost some of its glamour for a place to live due to multiple reasons. Overall though it is still a good place live and raise a family.
