    The fact that Zoe is almost 12, looks and acts like a 5 year old dog, just shows how there is a right way to take care of a dog: and thats doing your research, talking to vets, and respecting breed needs. such a good girl i love her

      My dog izzy died when she was 7 do to a ruptured tumor on her spleen. And honestly every time I see videos like this I wish I knew about this stuff a loooong time ago. Cause if I did maybe I’d have still her with me. She was on a dry food diet her whole life and only weeks after she died we researched and found out dry food has basically zero absorbable nutrients and vitamins. She’s right that the best thing you can feed your dog is a raw meat diet. Dog food brands will legit spray on artificial vitamins and nutrients onto the food just so it can pass to be sold. It goes straight through your dog without them being able to absorb anything from what they ate. So yea if you’re going to have a dog, do research, make sure you can financially and environmentally support them, and pay close attention to them. I’m sorry for going on a tangent but I know a lot of people love their dogs like I loved mine and I don’t want anyone to risk having to go through that so suddenly like I did, you can be promised 15 years of your dog if you are knowledgeable. But you can get half that otherwise.

      Genetics can also have an impact. Notice that Zoe is of a working class GSD, the spine is straight and her butt is round.
      German Shepherds that are bred for show purposes has a hump in their spine, apparently because it’s prettier, and a less round bum.
      I don’t get it. It can really fuck with the dog’s quality of life and make it so it has a hard time living out the later years.
      I’m saying that as a breeder. Zoe is obviously taken good care of but she’s also of a superior life expectancy from genetics.
      Welcome to my life

      @@laurakastrup yes! I thunk breeding is one thing that actually does need regulated. Pit bulls can have aggression bred into them by ignorant irresponsible breeders...and as you know, all sorts of other issues, both behaviorally and health wise

    • @dreaming-of-spots6805
      @dreaming-of-spots6805 Před 2 lety +28

      @@megancrager4397 pit bulls also are hunting dogs- specifically boar hunting dogs. They should have a very high prey drive and be high energy, gutsy, intense dogs who don't back down. Humans aggression, no, but other animals, yes, aggression/prey drive should be expected. There's an attitude in the US (and western Europe but less so) that if a dog doesn't have the temperament of a golden retriever, it's bad and needs to be changed, instead of respecting the fact that different breeds have different needs. So, yes, crappy breeders are responsible for human aggressive pitbulls, but a lot of people also expect them to be something they're not. And that goes for a lot of breeds too- like the people who get huskies or malamutes or malinois or other intense, high-drive breeds and then complain that they're destroying the house.

    I really appreciate that you push talking to a vet before switching to raw-- a lot of vets in the vet communities I follow are against a raw food diet because many people who choose to raw feed don't consult a veterinary dietician and, as a result, don't ensure the meal is actually meeting all of the dog's nutritional needs! Good on you

    • @dragonsheen3049
      @dragonsheen3049 Před 2 lety +64

      So true! I'm a veterinary assistant and some of the raw diet people were just insufferable. They didn't listen to the veterinarian and ended up with an overweight dog, because they thought they knew better. I met an owner who fed their dog nothing but cooked chicken! Just because an alternative diet works amazing for some dogs doesn't mean it will work for theirs. Dry dog food CAN be good, as long as you ASK YOUR VET and invest in a high quality kibble. As an aside, for anyone reading, DO NOT BUY GRAIN FREE!! Grain free diets have been linked to dilated cardiomyopathy later in the dog's life. Many people don’t realize that part of what causes spinal issues and hip problems isn’t just the breeding. It’s too much, too soon physical activity like jumping off things,playing frisbee and just flat out playing too hard when they are young . Their backs and hips are easy to damage when they are young. Over stressing their bodies at an early age can cause expensive problems later.. My previous dog was a shepherd mix. She blew out both her back knees at the same time! My dad trained him well to where all you had to say was bath time and he would go straight to the bathtub and jump right in. He would get his bath and wait till you left the room then he would jump out and shake. Then I would lay a towel down in the hallway, open the door and he would go to the towel and lay down and let me towel dry him. He was 110 lbs of rough and tumble, but well behaved.

My current girl is a retriever/pit mix (according to the pound) and I needed help training her. After hearing that I walked her for several hours, played outside off leash for at least 2 hours, played inside for at least 2 hours every day and had still yet to see her sleep months after adopting her the trainer suggested that her diet was too high quality and that I should feed her worse quality food so she would be less energetic. My secret: learning. Never stop learning. There's a reason I have a 13 (and almost a half) year old great dane who has only fallen to mobility issues in the past month or so. A year ago she could have outrun any dog in the house. It's never as simple as diet or medication or veterinary care or what have you. It's knowledge of everything combining to make the best life you can for your dog as an individual. What works for my ancient, now crippled dane does not work for my coming 4 year old Newfoundland, and neither of their plans work for my working livestock guardian dogs of a variety of ages.

      Yo that's... not normal. Talk to your vet about that asap.
      I have a 13yo and she's in fantastic shape, still as happy as ever. Blind? Yup. Deaf? Yup. But she's a darned good girl.

      You can also try to give just an yolk alone mixed with a ground beef.

      We had to elevate our cats food....due to her not swallowing properly and eating to fast.

    She is GORGEOUS! Oh my GOD, your dogs diet is amazing! You are the BEST dog owner ever! Damn, good for you. So many people feed their animals garbage so when I see someone who feeds their dogs the best, I get excited. Bless you!

    I'm so glad you're promoting raw food for dogs in such a rational and careful way. I had great results with my mother's two old cats (22 and 18) but I definitely did a lot of research and worked with their vet. The older cat had kidney issues and the vet was concerned that raw meat might be too much for her. So, we did extra checks on her kidney values and we were both pleased and surprised that her kidneys did not seem to mind at all! Both cats blew out their coats two time the summer I changed their food. The 18 year old wasn't as keen on the all raw diet so I added in a good quality canned food and she took to it quite well. The 22 year old took one bite and never looked back! Both of them lived a much healthier life in their old age, the 22 year old died two years later, the 18 year old not only made it to 20 but regained a svelte figure (she was never over fed) and her "cheeks" receded until she actually had a jawline again. Even better, she began to play enthusiastically and a lot of her anxiety eased up. I miss both those cats so much.
    Zoey was a beautiful dog indeed, inside and out. I'm sorry to learn from the comments that she's gone on ahead of you but yes, she'll be waiting on the other side and happy to greet you.
