The 10 Frigates of the Future

  • Frigates remained a crucial element of navies until the mid-19th century. The first ironclads were classified as "frigates" because of the number of guns they carried. The next generation Frigate shapes are designed to offer a minimal radar cross section, which also lends them good air penetration; the maneuverability of these frigates has been compared to that of sailing ships. The Buzz in this video presents the 10 Main Frigates of the Future. Enjoy watching
    Cheers!
A big shout out to the Artists who drew the Frigates. Check out their websites (Link below )

The hunter class frigates are based on the British Type 26 Frigates, built simultaneously with the hunter class. Why omit the British type 26? Also, the Spanish navy F110 frigates currently being built will pack a lot of firepower; why omit that as well?

Warships of all types are getting bigger and bigger and have been for decades, by the 1970s Destroyers were getting up towards 4500t(type 42) by the 90s they were up to 8000t(Burke Flt 1) currently they are getting up to 10,000t(Sejong the Great) and the next gen is up to 12,000t(type 055) go back to the 1940s everyone would insist that size means they are Heavy Cruisers.
Frigates in the 1970s were getting up around 3000t(Leander), by the 90s they were getting up around 4500t(Halifax), by 2010 they were getting up around 6500t(Fremm), by 2020 up around 8000t(Type 26) and we are seeing designs now for 10,000t Frigates(MKS-180), that is Light Cruiser size from the 1940s. At the same time we are also seeing a growth in size of Corvettes from Around 800t in the 60s to 3000t ships today.
The other issue causing confusion for Frigate designations, is that we are seeing smaller Navies building 3500t ships today and calling them Frigates as well, when they clearly should not have the same designation as a Type 26 or MKS-180.
The major difference between a Destroyer and a Frigate is there primary Role, Destroyers are normally AAW Ships, Frigates ASW Ships. But to say a Ship should be called a Destroyer simply because its 9000t, ignores History and design.

As of Jan 1st 2021 the MKS180 has officially been re-designated to F126-class. Also the German Navy is already projecting a replacement for the Sachsen (F124)-class as these ships entered Service fairly shortly after the Brandenburg (F123)-class. These ships are not supposed to be as massive as the F126 which at 10,000 tons of displacement rivals a Ticonderoga-class Guided Missile Cruiser and is instead supposed to top out at around 7,500 tons of displacement which would be more in line with an Aleigh-Burke class Destroyer.

The line between stealthy, heavily armed corvettes with advanced electronics --- and frigates, is sometimes unclear. Our tiny navy decided that the highly customized German corvette with a bigger, stronger construction, and frigate-like weapons load, was superior to fewer numbers of bigger vessels.
The IDF is an integrated single service, and trains to fight as a coordinated theatre operation. Air, sea, underwater, land based ICBM missile, infantry, satellite recon, UCAV, etc all under one command. Some other nations train similarly, at a high level of sophistication. The point being how you use and coordinate naval assets is equally critical to the quality and engineering of any single class of ship. All these countries have fine engineers, and can build professionally, or purchase wisely. Though in the end politicians and senior officers and budget controllers determine what a shipyard will build, and how new assets will be outfitted and deployed.
Pissing contests between rival nations will dissolve at first shot in any future war between, or among, similarly advanced technological forces. Missiles, and countermeasures, will tell the tale. At sea. Not name-calling or sloganism.
Great equipment needs great sailors and great leaders.

Niligiri is 149 meters and 6700 tons full.
Its Destroyer Counterpart, Vishakapatnam Class, which are also under construction is 163 meters and 7500 tons.
      There is a clear distinction.

The Hunter Class will be equipped with the US AEGIS combat system which is used on US Arleigh Burke Destroyers. They will however have significantly fewer VLS cells because of their multi mission roles.
