    really useful to know, made red wine and maple wine a few times and just directly poured the wine from the brewing jug into bottles. made the wine taste bitter if it got really mixed up before I drank it. gonna use a syphon this time for my maple wine

    Good call. Instead of using a tea towel, gently pull the end of the hose from the plastic tubing. You can then slide the tubing through a bung then reconnect the plastic pipe. Sticking the bung back into the bottle gives the symphony a solid fix to keep it in place. You can slowly slide the tube to the right depth as required.

    • @SergyPie
      @SergyPie Před 4 lety

      Behaving Beardly I’ve got a few corks that I’ve drilled the bore slightly larger to fit the pipe. Small details and the cloth is a good shout but thought I’d share. Great idea and can’t believe I’ve never thought of doing that before. Something in my mind thought the flow itself started the process rather than gravity 😔

    Last night I had a brainwave and realised a way you can achieve the same hygiene level without the fuss where you CAN simply suck to start the siphon and avoid filling the pipe with water... Simply cut a 2" section of pipe [=the 'mouthpiece'] and fit it to the outlet of the tap. Suck on the mouthpiece to start the siphon, and when the liquid starts to flow through the main pipe, pull the mouthpiece from the tap, before the liquid reaches the tap, and let the liquid flow into your vessel uncontaminated, without the need for water. The long end of the tap is tapered, so it naturally lets you pull off the mouthpiece easily.
