Flashbacks are terrible no matter what age the battle was fought in.
Excellent animation, beautifully done story, intercuts were well timed and placed, the retirement of a successful gladiator might include a small vineyard or other farm. The suggestion of another (son? wife?) who sympathizes was perfect.
    • Possibly erroneous notes:
(In other words, things I think are true but haven't researched.)
All four of the gladiators, unless already dead, are in deep trouble for killing their opponent without permission. This includes the main character.
The main character is armed as a Retiarius, which means he should have a net. I don't know if I just missed it, or if this is a common variant.
The slender opponent's weapon looked like a larger variant of a Star Trek Lirpa. Obviously, the gladiator type came first, but the description of the gladiator weapon is different.
    In any case, WELL DONE!

    • @sulien6835
      @sulien6835 Před 2 lety +8

The match-up in teams of two is accurate, as gladiator types were sort-of like character classes in vidoe games where each type had a specific tactical role. The main guy was a rētiārius (though he should have had a net), the two big guys were secūtōrēs, and the skinny guy was an arbēlas.
The secūtōrēs and the rētiāriī were trained to counter each-other, so it's kind of ironic they teamed up and unlikely that two secūtōrēs would fight each-other. The rētiārius-arbēlas match up is accurate, but not in the way shown, as the arbēlas' job is to cut the net off of his partner when the rētiārius throws it.
A lanista - the person who owned, fed, housed, and trained the gladiators - would loan out gladiators to arena managers for a fee. If a gladiator died in the ring, the manager owed the lanista many times the original rate to account for lost income. Instead, most gladiators would signal defeat by raising their finger and walk away relatively uninjured. If this was ignored, the manager would obviously be very pissed off, though the gladiator who killed his opponent would probably be off scott-free because the arena manager was responsible for whatever happened in the ring.

I grew up and entered the service as well. My experiences were different, but somewhat traumatic. So now i dream about dragging dead solders along a trench for miles and miles. Bodies everywhere. I am to get them back home. But so many bodies. My grandfather passed almost 10 years ago. As i get to the destination with a body on my back, i look up and see him. He tells me to never feel sorry for myself and that we did our duty. The sleep meds keep the dreams under control. My doctor says mostly I have survivors guilt.

in a real fight you don't get such a thing as a 'winner', only (if you're lucky) survivors.
The trouble is that surviving too many fights makes it harder to survive everyday life.
This guy 'won' by fighting to earn a life for his son where the boy didn't have to fight to survive, I hope he didn't pass on his personal war to his son.

The father won his freedom in the gladiatorial arena.
So of course he will suffer PTSD.
