What Do Cats Think When You Leave The House? Do They Miss You?

  • Whether you’re out of the house for several days on vacation or simply gone for a few hours to run some errands…what does your cat think when you’re away?
Do they think you have abandoned them? Do they feel confused?
And have you ever wondered what cats think of humans? Do our cats know we’re humans, or do they think we’re just larger cats?
Keep watching for a thorough breakdown of what’s happening inside your cat’s mind and what your cat thinks when you leave the house.
What your cat thinks when you leave the house depends on your cat’s relationship with you. It also depends on if your absence is part of a regular routine.
For some cats, leaving the house, especially for long periods of time, can cause separation anxiety, loneliness, confusion and even destructive behavior. But for some cats, your absence may trigger no negative feeling at all. Your pet may choose to sleep away those hours and patiently wait for your return.
Every cat is different. but let's take a closer look at a few notable possibilities.
Cats learn schedules very quickly and they recognize our time away from home as our regular “hunting” time. Mother cats regularly leave their kittens to go hunting for food. So this leaving periodically is not unusual in the mind of a feline.
If you go to work or school at the same time every day, and come home at about the same time every day, it becomes part of your cat’s routine.
Although cats don't wear watches, they do have their own internal clocks and concept of time. They can tell time by observing and memorizing predictable routines. They observe external cues such as daylight, the smell of the air, your behavior, and internal cues such as their own hunger.
But remember, cats become upset when things change.
It’s only changes to the usual schedule that throw off the cat’s routine and they probably wonder what we are doing and when we are coming back.
Cats are very routine oriented. So if you leave for several days, or their routine changes in some way, that’s when they may feel confused or abandoned.
It can be very stressful for your pet. Your cat will miss you and wonder where will their next meal come from, how will they need to get water, and worry they won't have companionship and the other securities you provide them. When their anxiety is heightened, it can lead to destructive behaviors such as scratching furniture or urinating in random places. A lonely cat may also wander through the house, constantly meowing and yowling, looking for someone to answer them. Some cats will even chew through screens and try to find a way to escape.
This is why leaving your cat alone for extended periods of time can prove a negative experience.
Do cats know that we are not cats?
Now that we know what our cats think when they are left alone, let’s take that one step further.
Do our cats know we’re humans, or do they think we’re just larger cats?
You have probably noticed that when cats socialize with us, they purr, rub against us, knead on us, and even bring us prey. Each of these behaviors are commonly seen in the way that cats interact with other cats. This has led to a longstanding wisdom in the cat-owner community that our felines basically perceive us humans as bigger cats - not as a separate species.
However, experts believe that strong attachment, rather than mistaken identity, drives these behaviors toward humans.
Cats are cognitively capable of distinguishing between a human and a cat - think, for example, of the differences in reactions of cats to an unfamiliar human in their living space versus to an unfamiliar cat.
Cats view us as social companions and as a “valuable resource”. To cats, it's not a matter of what we are, it's about what we do. They appreciate the affection and food we give them, but at the end of the day, we are strange giants to them.
What Do Cats Think About All Day?
Have you ever wondered what cats think about?
Scientist believe the way cats think is probably very different from the way we do.
We humans have many structures that help us interpret the ideas and thoughts we have, but cats don’t.
For example, cats do not have "language" because they don't have the Wernicke-area, a language processing center in their brain, so they cannot learn and comprehend language.
Cats can associate words with memories, but their minds are not wired to use language the same way as people.
Without the ability to understand complex language, it becomes impossible to have complex thought and internal monologue. Think about what you are thinking about when you are not thinking in words.
The small amount of scientific research out there on cats’ brains leads us to believe that cats can only think subconsciously. They can draw upon memories to guide future behavior, however they do not come up with their own thoughts or ideas about a situation.
Therefore, when your cat is chilling out, they are not thinking about anything in particular.

I was displaced last year. It was me & 💎 🐱. We lived in our car. I would take her to the park daily. That is where I would leave her until I got off of work. I would go back to the park; at night & call her. She would come running out of darkness; to me. One day a stranger told me, "That cat really enjoys you to keep coming back, like that". I knew how fortunate I was to have her. She often kept watch, while I slept at night.

My 3rd child was delivered via C-section which meant that I was in the hospital for 3 days. My cat was NOT happy about this. Everyone left early one morning & everyone came back later except for me. The cat wouldn't come near dad & gave him the stink-eye wondering what he did with mom. That cat went from one end of the house to the other calling for me. He finally "found" me in the phone. Yes, I had to talk to this cat everyday on the phone to get him to calm down until I came home! 😹

OMG! Same thing with me! I left for a month for work and had a friend of mine coming to the house everyday to feed my Miss Kitty and clean her litter box. Anyway, my friend could tell MIss Kitty was unhappy with my not being there. So, I told her to put kitty on the phone. She thought I was nuts! Every day I would call just to talk to the cat and she would "Meow" back to me the entire time! I know she was telling me I love you and you need to get your ass back here! :-) I loved her so much. She was the first cat I had that I had that kind of relationship with. I was devastated when she crossed the rainbow bridge. I swore I would never get a cat again because of the loss I felt. It took 8 years, but....I now have two felines that I love just as much! And, BTW, Freddy Mercury when he was alive also called his cats and talked to them on the phone when he was on tour. This one is a sad story but, my baby boy was 18 when he crossed the rainbow bridge - I was out at work that day and I got a phone call from my dad saying there was something wrong with my kitty and he sadly told me that he thinks it's "time" since he was laying on the ground unresponsive, but shallowly breathing.. I cried my eyes out the whole drive home, ran inside and yelled his name and he immediately with all his strength looked in my direction and tried to meow. My dad was amazed cause he wasn't responding to him or my brother and he hadn't moved at all since they found him in the kitchen.. so it shows how much he loved me and knew my voice that he would try to look at me... The whole drive to the vet he just kept trying to look at me, his eyes felt almost void and he was so suddenly weak and it came out of nowhere...We tried everything we could but in the end we headbutted and locked eyes til it was his end..I love him so much, I miss him..

I beg to differ but, cats do understand speach. We found this out when we had some cats sent to us from Russia. When they got to us here in Texas they didn't know what we were saying. They picked up English fairly quickly, actually. Whenever we had a client came in and Russia was their first language they would speak the native tongue and you could see the cats eyes light up. It was so interesting..

I didn't need to watch the video and just read the transcript instead, which was much faster. I live in NZ and everyone has indoor/outdoor cats with a cat door, as there are no predators for them here. I couldn't imagine having an indoor cat, they must be bored out of their minds. My cats were so busy when I was gone at work all day - in and out of the cat door, surveying their territory outside, people watching the people using the footpath in or street while sitting on the warm driveway (it was like a heating pad if the sun had been out), one of them had various friends she got pats from, etc.

My cats for sure miss me when I'm gone. They also show affection when I'm around. To say they don't think about future or make plans is wrong. They let me know when they want something and make plans on how to get me to do what they want. They have plans or goals. They will manipulate a situation to accomplish their goals. These goals are not always concerning food. They will do things to get me to open certain doors or boxes. They watch for opportunities to gain whatever goal they have. My cats demonstrate self awareness they recognize their own reflection and the difference between their reflection and that of another cat. I have both cats and dogs they have very different thinking processes but both demonstrate intelligence far beyond the levels they are attributed to have. They both also have emotions and can show these emotions in very clear ways. My female cat is over joked when I get home as I travel for employment. So I at times am gone for several days at a time. She will initially greet me with joy that I am home. That will then be closely followed with her form of punishment by showing me her back for an extended period. That is a planned action. She also will sleep on my travel bag and refuse to get off the bag. That action can go on for days. Not just when I'm preparing to leave or having just arrived. This is consciousness she has decided that occupying my travel bag will keep me from leaving. She also gets angry with the Labrador cuz he travels with me. I tried to get her to also travel but it was too stressful for her, crying and pacing for several days non stop is nor healthy. She just wants me home, and treats.

I, unfortunately, have long periods of time at work... from 16 to 48 hours. I know that when I grab my work bag...my Joy tries to block me from leaving the house. Fortunately, I do have a friend who stops in and feeds and plays with her while I'm gone. Usually, when I return, she's standoffish for about an hour and then becomes my cuddle buddy. Since my wife passed away, we have been each others best companion and buds.

I made a needlework wall hanging and gave it to my mother decades ago. She had no room for it in her new apartment, so she returned it to me. I put it up above my dresser. One of my cats sat on the dresser staring at it endlessly and creepily until I moved it somewhere where she couldn't get near it. She didn't stare at the blank spot on the wall, so there was SOMEthing about that framed picture that she was fascinated by.

During the summer, I would often leave the house around 1 or 2 pm on Saturday, and go out for the rest of the day. My cat would watch me in my car, from my window. I wasn't sure whether she was sad that I was leaving. But, whenever I would take a shower, she would then go onto my bed and wait for me. And, almost every night, after I lie down, she climbs up on my chest, kneads my neck for a few minutes, purring loudly! Then, she goes to sleep between my legs. And then, wakes me up at 3am, when she wants to be fed!

My cat, Nala is always provided for. Recently I was nit feeling good. I'm disabled, but this was deeply internal trouble I have made things much easier for whomever has to check on her. I went through surgery when she was 2, not long after adopting her. I was gone 4 weeks. Her other favorite human would stopped after school, between teaching and meetings. I had food, etc stocked up for my friend to use. But Nala would do a plaintiff cry at the door of our Apt. whenever she heard someone in hallway. So this time I had more toys, her favorite stuffed animals, pre-measured food & supplements ready, as my friend was out of town. I also had another friend get her older grandson, and an adult to come with him. For a while she was trying, but really didn't want to eat or play. Again she cried at the door "almost non-stop" in the beginning, until a neighbor across from me started talking to and comforting her. I sensed it, & in exactly 1 week I fought back from emergency 6to get home to her. Best day ever for us both. Ore- planning and lining up help may have eased my mind, but not hers. All us humans can do is our best, and do it with LOVE.😿😺

Ive had that with my rescue cat. He was around 2-2½, when I adopted him from the shelter, and he'd had a rough life. He would try to eat anything, including anything reminding him of grass, leaves, twigs etc, so he was obviously used to having a "diverse" diet to fill his stomach. But even worse he was afraid of everything. It took 2 weeks for him to even get off the floor. The poor dear was so scared, but he imprinted on me right away. I was his only security in a terrifying world, and he had severe separation anxiety. Luckily I work from home, but he would panic, if I was gone even 5 minutes. It was 8 months, b4 he would stop having panic attacks, thinking I'd abandoned him, just coz I went to get groceries.
Thankfully over the last 4½ years, he has grown far more confident and really feels secure in his home. As long as I dont take him outside, every 6 months for his vet check-up he wails the entire trip there, then goes limp as a rag, like hes given up on life, until we're back home. Hes learned to tolerate, that Im away from him for some hours, but hes not happy about it, he always makes sure, I know that, when I come back home, and a lot of closeness and petting is required to soothe him.
I dont mind, Im just happy, that he feels secure with me, and hes a very sociable and loving cat. But I cant even imagine going away for days or even weeks, how he would react.
So a long story to say - give her some time, give her lots of love and petting, and once shes convinced, u wont be "abandoning" her again, things will go back to normal.

I’ve had her a year and we finally took a week to go to the lake and of course I brought the girls with me and they loved it (lots of big windows for bird watching). But we accidentally left some important stuff so my son and I had to drive two hours back up to get it and just stayed one night. We got back on Wednesday night 5 days ago and Lion “new cat” hasn’t left my side even at night. My knees hurt from making space between them all night so she can sleep there 🤦‍♀️😂😂

I had a cat that spent part of his time outdoors, and he had a routine when it came to that.
Generally that routine in the evening hours would be, every 45 minutes to an hour, meowing at my front to come inside, snack on some food, then go back outdoors again.
My bedtime would be late night, early morning, and he was good at coming indoors to settle down. That is, with the exception when I was prepping for a roadtrip.
He'd make note of the preparations I'd be doing the night before. Whereupon, his schedule would change. No longer he would be be at my door on-the-hour; and was nowhere to be found even at 3 AM when I planned to leave.
At around 7 AM, in the daylight, I'd find him settled down on my neighbor's patio table, him being reluctant to move; so I'd pick him up and take him home.
I contend he'd do that kind of lighthearted mischief as he knew when I left for that roadtrip, he'd be indoors for a couple of days . . . of course with plenty of food and water.
Although his actions put me hours behind schedule, it never frustrated me. Instead, I found it amusing that he was cleverly observant of my actions when prepping for the trip; and he wanted to make the most of being outdoors before being confined indoors for a couple of days.

I think most people forget, that cats are hunters. And like all hunting animals they need to experience that abilities or they feel down. That's why also dogs which are trained to act as a hunter companion are like the "apport" game, because it simulates that the dog is catching a prey like a bird, shot down by the hunter. A hunter dog is tracking the falling prey and brings it back to his owner.
And cats are their own hunters and they also need to use that abilities to track, hunt and get the success of take down their prey and get their victory. That's why they love to chase after a plastic fishing rod with a feather on the string because it's like a small bird. And they like the "ball in a tunnel" game, because it's like a mouse trying to hide from them
