In this video I go in depth on my journey to 100k in bookkeeping revenue! My journey to 100k has been full of mistakes, victories, and messy action. My hope is that my journey to $100k inspires you to start your own bookkeeping business or financial coaching business. I also wanted to share my story that it is 100% possible to fun a 6 figure bookkeeping business from home. (Remember that bookkeeping is just ONE of my services) I am so thankful that I took the leap and invested in Bookkeeper Business Launch in 2017 and you can find the link for that program above. Great information! I had to learn many of these lessons the hard way as well! I learned that you can "fire" your clients that cross business boundaries. I'm a high believer in strong Business Boundaries. One of my favorite quotes about boundaries comes from Dr. Henry Cloud. "You get what you tolerate!" Congrats on hitting 100k!

Jess, I’m only 12 minutes into this video and I just want to say thank you for being so straight forward and honest in sharing your experiences. When you're talking about signs you look for to determine if a client is right for you, and the practical reasons for turning down clients and not being afraid to repel those who aren't a good fit, it really helped me to hear words that described what I've been doing wrong in my approach to romantic relationships (or business partners kinda, if we see life as a business!). I'm going to work on being the type of person that I want my clients to be, and not being afraid to kindly redirect the rest

By not telling other businesses about my services I am robbing them of help they could use... Wow! That hit home for me. I just sent my first ever email to a business I have really been wanting to work with. I had been putting it off for months due to not feeling 'ready'. It is a martial art's business, I used to attend their dojo. My ideal niche is martial arts/fitness/health :) Even if this business doesn't become a client I feel like sending that very first email was a real break-through activity. love love love this video!!! I made a really hard decision recently, and that was to leave my full time corporate job so I can concentrate in growing my bookkeeping business. I'm still trying to find my first monthly client. I love all your ideas, so I am going to start doing those things. I love how transparent you are! This video was extremely encouraging! Thank you! You mentioned that you didn't know how to price the prospective clients. I was under the understanding that Bookkeeper Launch had a system for pricing. Was that not made available to you? Or was that offered at an additional cost and you didn't get it? I'm interested in the program but don't know if the investment is worth it.
Yes, it's definitely in the course (and has been updated since I went through it) so I wouldn't worry about that. It's just that every proposal is custom so even with a system, there's going to be gray areas. Two clients with the same amount of "work" but one is easy to work with and one is not... I'm going to have two very different prices for both.

Hi Jes, thank you for this video. I have 2 questions, should I ask for a higher price to negotiate down to what I actually want to get paid, and second, I ask the client pays for quickbooks subscription?
No, the price should not be negotiable. Whatever price you quote them in the proposal should be your final price. Clients will take you way more seriously this way. And you can pay the QBO subscription at a discount for the client (accountants get it cheaper) and you can use it as a selling point or you can have the client pay for it.

Well, I’ve been bookkeeping since 2004 but didn’t start building my own business until 2020. I’ve been doing subcontracting and building a client base since then.

Of course! Depends on your niche! If you work with micro companies could be 50 clients, if you work with a few large ones could be 10. I’ve got about 7 clients on the smaller side and I do about 24k a year just in monthly recurring revenue (not including new clients, clean ups, or other services). Hopefully that helps!

Hi, Roshan, check out the qualifications to be a bookkeeper for Intuit! They are 100% virtual and it would be a great place to start. Are you in bookkeeper groups on fb? Many large bookkeeper firms are definitely growing and hiring employees. They often put out their applications in fb groups with people that they know and trust. I would def start networking there!

May I ask, is that $100,000 from your inception to July 2020? Is that about 3 years full time? In essence, it's about $35,000/year of 1099 income?
Sure, so the 100k was for 2.5 years of bookkeeping revenue (but just one of my services within my business). 2018 was my first full year in business and I did around 35k and then 2019 I did 50k and then the rest was in 2020. Hope that helps! 😊
Great video! Just curious for approximate 40k of annual revenue how many hours per week do you think one would need?
It’s so hard to say. To get to 40k I was working full time of course but the time isn’t so much doing the work as it is getting the client. Now I do about 30-40k in just bookkeeping revenue with a few days a month but I’m not doing any marketing for it. So I would say it’s much more time consuming in the beginning and then once you have the client base that you want, you could drastically cut back your hours and not lose revenue. Hopefully that makes sense!

It really varies! I took a temporary step back after we paid off our house in October! The first few years while I was growing the business it was prob 40-50. If I’ve got a big project I’m working on it could go up to that again but it’s a fraction of that now.

I decided to add other services based on what people were coming to me and asking for. You certainly don’t have to! You could just stick with bookkeeping and have success that way too! Bookkeeper Launch has a better track record and was more comprehensive for someone like me with zero prior experience!
