I love the books so much. Favorite quote, really represents my view of this book, “We love what we love. Reason does not enter into it. In many ways, unwise love is the truest love. Anyone can love a thing because. That's as easy as putting a penny in your pocket. But to love something despite. To know the flaws and love them too. That is rare and pure and perfect.” (Name of the Wind)
That was one of the best statements in the video, or would that technically be a hot take? "Tried to light someone on fire"... I'll see myself to the door now 😁
Wow, I never considered Kvothe to be a Mary Sue. It's obvious almost as soon as you meet him that Kvothe is a profoundly scarred and tragic character. He almost never gets anything right. He's repeatedly shown to have the requisite skills to accomplish a thing, but not the experience or the wisdom. His "successes" often cause more problems than they solve.
And that's the point of it. I feel like people who call Kvothe a Mary Sue are being really shallow. Yes, he's a genius but emotionally there is...A LOT...going on. He's so arrogant, impulsive, self-destuctive, prideful, reactive, self-righteous, obsessive, self-absorbed yet also noble and compassionate and tender-hearted. He's crippled so much grief and loneliness - his pain is too deep for words and he will never be free. Kindness from a strangers is a recurring theme throughout the books and that's because Kvothe was a) raised by very kind people. His childhood was AmAzing until it was ripped away from him and b) Kvothe spent 4 years on the streets as a child, homeless and traumatised and grief-stricken and completely, utterly alone. There a very few instances where he experienced kindness from a stranger and those moments were so powerful for him. Which is why he goes out of his way for other people - he himself knows how powerful that is. When he rescued Fela from Ambrose he got criticised for being a stereotypical good guy when it really wasn't that. He was being kind. That's all it is. And what that is for is really deep. It comes from a unbelievably sad place that he does for other people.
I think he got it right, Kvothe is written to make one think of a mary sue, it is very understandable why people think of him as such if only fleetingly exposed to him, but he very much is not in the end. The main trait of a mary sue is, that they warp the world around them, and in a way, kvothe does that, but to the opposite effect. Considering how he talked to the cthaeh and therefor everything aound him gets corrupted by it! It is such a great twist on that writing error around a real mary sue. It is like the author looked at the trope of a mary sue and went, ok, how do we do this one right, how do I need to change it, to fix it, get it to work. I still do not like him for similar reasons I do not like mary sues, but the writing is never the less great!
For book 3 - I actually want Kvothe to be a Mary Sue - cause from book 1 it's quite apparent this dude is going to end up unhappy, alone and probably literally cursed in some way. I want him to have some happy ending. This is like if Harry Potter started with '19 years later' Harry sitting in front of everyone's graves, mourning.
The character Denna is someone I have so much compassion for! She has clearly been terribly abused and mistreated. The scene where Kvothe is spying on her and listening to her conversation with a younger girl - heart breaking. Kvothe and Denna could almost be siblings if you look at the mistreatment they have faced, the way they had to save themselves by their own wit and their love of music. When I first met Elidon at Kvothe's interview I thought I would like him, but the guy got too weird and totally unreliable fast. Kelvin, thought is a really great guy and seems to be one of the very few adults who genuinely looks out for Kvothe.
They've really been through a lot at such a young age. It makes sense that they have a weird and complicated relationship. Plus, have you seen a teenager having a healthy and stable relationship?
Elodin might be strange but I wouldnt call him unreliable. He's trying to teach Kvothe things that can't really be taught. He can only guide students towards learning the secrets of naming on their own. As far as jumping off buildings and burning Hemme's room those were much needed lessons for Kvothe to learn to think before acting. Hemmed deserved it.
Katie and I see much of the book EXACTLY the same way. The sexism in the world is needed to show how strong Denna is, while she carves out her own life. Also, there are MANY "strong" female characters, Denna, Devi, Mola, Laurian, Auri, Shehyn. Yes, they don't all have large roles, but there are already so many "main" characters, they can't all have huge role.
I've been a follower for a while now & I've always loved how much you Love the Kingkiller Chronicles! I first read it in 2009 & it has also been my favorite book/series since! I've re-read the book several times before finding your channel, but you have inspired me to re-re-read these books, create my own theories & crack open all my copies of it beyond any binding repairs while I'm happily waiting for The Doors of Stone (I know it'll be worth the wait lol) I ABSOLUTELY LOVE KATIES VIEWS ON EVERYTHING! (Not just bc we share a name) She is just so sweet, so precious & must be protected at all costs! Please include her in more of your videos 💕 You two are Thee Cutest!!
KATELYN!!! This is Katie. Thank you for your kind words 🥹 I’m glad and honestly surprised so many people liked my thoughts on it. Kingkiller is really something else! I’m glad you’re getting back into it. I’m hoping to get lots of The Wise Man’s Fear read over Christmas 😊😊 We’ll definitely do a part two to this video when I’m done. And, if you didn’t know, Jay and I have a channel we do together 😉
Take this with a grain of salt (as I'm a guy), but I've always seen the sexism in the world as being used by rothfuss to promote themes of anti-sexism. Basically, using the setting of a world of sexism to challenge sexism in the real world
I liked it because I love Auri. But that was hard to get through for me. Patrick Rothfuss has the disclaimer at the beginning of the book and maybe I took that to heart.
When Katie asked about the tree on the cover, i was like "it could be this tree, or this tree, OR this tree" and i realised Kvothe has an unusual amount of trees associated with him. Off the top of my head i cant remember another character that has more then 1 tree associated with them. Great video! Cant wait for the WMF review.
I laughed so many times in this video, Katie is so funny! 😂So good to see her on the main channel again! But if anyone is reading this and hasn't watched their vlog channel yet, they make some really fun videos! Would highly recommend checking out The Sunshine seekers
I'd say the difference in perception of Elodin and Denna is mostly context. Elodin is Kvothe's teacher, which is a vastly different power structure than a friend/love interest like Denna. Also, Elodin seems to test Kvothe and nudges him in some kind of direction, so, there is the implied goal of teaching something to Kvothe, while Denna seems to just string Kvothe along for as long as it pleases her.
I tried to get my wife to read it but she HATES Unfinished series, And this is prob worst than GOT. Then randomly i saw her reading it because her brother recommended it and she forgot it was the series i recommended. (Saying : Kingkiller chronicles vs. Name of the wind) and was super pissed but finished reading anyway cause she was addicted.
@@niveshproag3761 right? She got bored with WoT after book 4, and refuses to start Words of Radiance. luckily she loves misborn and by far her fav is Discworld books.
@@kuchapel6689 If it's Brando Sando, you never have to worry about it being an unfinished series 🤣 And if she loves Mistborn she's gonna love Stormlight. Tbh tho, Mistborn's next Wax and Wayne's coming up soon too. Spoilt for choice xD
@@kuchapel6689 woahhh.. WoT book 1 took me forever to get through but I thought the story was pretty good by book 2/3, I find RJ writing to have pacing issues most notable 8-10. Stormlight (all cosmere) is really good and Brando is currently writing book 5 plus all his cosmere books have cross overs which are fun to look for. I decided to try discworld for first time earlier this year, I listened to guards, guards on audible and I realized satirical fantasy just isn’t for me. I find it so interesting on how book lovers can really like the same book/books but then have widely different opinions on other books/series
I love Denna. I’ll be honest, I think the entire controversy around her is mostly due to the fact that, while these books are about high school aged people, they are written for an older audience. These books are so often recommended as YA, but I can’t even count the number of posts I’ve seen on the subreddit that boil down to “I definitely didn’t understand the story until I read this as an adult.” When we are that young, we just don’t have the capacity to see the world from a viewpoint that is radically different from our own. Hence, teen boys reading the story can’t see beyond the idea that Denna is leading Kvothe on. They don’t consider how impossible life would be for a teen girl with no familial support. She is vulnerable and she does what she must to limit that vulnerability.
I think it's just that Denna is basically a mirror of Kvothe, but because the book is written from Kvothe's perspective, we tend to be able to understand his behvaiour better than Denna's, even though she acts very similarely to him.
@@jonasen6709 not only that but we get a skewed perspective on her behavior. Kvothe makes assumptions for us. They both struggle with trust and will assume the other thinks less of them while they put the other on a pedestal. Making it seem like she's cold and he is just making excuses for her. When even with the skewed perspective we can see he internally talks about wanting to be closer with her but rarely acts on it where as she makes more of an active effort to be in his life.
Oh, I dislike Denna for she falls into that unrelatable glorifiction of a love interest clishee I dispise, so it is less her person, and more her role and Kvothes portrail of her I dislike. She also has traits I dislike, but so has kvothe and hating on her for hurting him apears unfair to me, for he aint innocent in how that all evolves either. I really pray there will be a plot twist and this is not going down the oh so tragic lovestory route . . . I hate glorifiction of toxicity . . . (but yeah, that is just as much on him as on her)
@@justfriendly7676 Technically yeah, though I'm starting a year of Sanderson on my channel this year and going into next year where I'll be making lots of Cosmere related vids
There are a lot of good/strong female characters in The Name of the Wind: Laurian/Netalia, Mola, Fela, Auri, Devi, and Denna. They each show important aspects of women's experiences.
My favourite part of the book is just after Kvothe finds his troupe murdered.. Reading about his stumble into the forest and the way Rothfuss presented the numbness of Kvothe's trauma was right in the nose.
Awesome video! Was really fun to see a new reader's perspective, I was not expecting her to like it so much tbh. I feel like KKC inspires intense emotion, like you either love it or hate it depending on how you feel about Kvothe and the writing style. I read both books two years ago and I keep coming back to your videos, they are always so polished and well made. Thanks for helping us get through the wait...
Loved this video!! Always great to know another person is enjoying it for the first time. I almost didn’t read it just because the name put me off of it for whatever reason. Now it’s one of my favorite parts.
I don’t really understand all the hate towards Rothfuss, the books and characters. If it is not what you are looking for in a story, go find one that you are looking for. And make that your favorite book.
He doesn’t deserve the hate, but he absolutely does deserve criticism for his behaviour. No book for 11 years and he recently promised to publish a sample chapter of book 3 after people paid to reach his charity goal. His said that he would publish the chapter by February and he failed to do so.
It's always great to see more people enjoying the KKC, I'm glad Katie liked it. I've never understood how people say Kvothe is a Mary Sue, he's so bad at so many things and has to work at what he's good at, not much is easy for him. Interesting comparison between Denna and Elodin, I'd never thought about that before. I think people can give Denna a hard time, personally I quite like her. Great video, it's always interesting to hear what new readers think of the series. Hope she enjoys The Wise Man's Fear!
@@CapturedInWords You’re so welcome! I love all your content you and Katie, I have subbed to sunshine seekers and I live for your new content. In fact I hope you tell us more about your own writing in the near future
Awesome video, guys!! I agree with most of Katie's views. Except Elodin, ofc x) I'm super curious what she'll think about WMF hahaha that book tends to turn people's opinions on their heads :D
I love Auri! Best character! She's so sweet and imo really brings out the best in Kvothe. The Slow Regard of Silent Things is probably my favorite piece of Rothfuss' writing. It helped me get thru some dark times in my personal life
I also like Denna as a character. I see her as a good foil to Kvothe but not in the typical ways that characters usually foil the protagonist. She's smart but in all the ways that Kvothe isn't and I think that can make some people feel like she's a con artist or something. Imo, Master Ash is using her in the same way that Kvothe is being used by the Chandrain. There will be a harsh confrontation between the two. I only hope that Kvothe doesn't take it too personally, but knowing Kvothe he probably will lol
You don't like his dad?!? Oh man, I thought the two made a GREAT pair. She was level headed and down to earth while HE was, yes, smart, had all the needed answers, etc. I thought they were a great team and a perfect pair of personalities for Kvothe to come to depending on his problem, etc. Oh man, I really liked the parents. lol
@@thesunshineseekers I totally get it. 😊 There's a few comments in there that could be controversial. Overall, I loved his playful manner along with hers. :)
I don't get the arrogant vibes from Kvothe. He went through a whole lot of bad situations. I'm going to have to read the books again especially after watching all your videos because you brought up lots of good points and new angles to explore. Your girlfriend is so cute by the way.
If possible could you please have Katie with you when you talk about books. I love her 0 predictions when reading a book because that's how I read a book! Because no matter how much you know in the real world, when you are reading a book you are supposed to be in that world and the only thing you know is what you read in the book. You are still welcome to visit Iceland and I will show you one or two places out of the way so to speak 😉
I love Denna. People don’t like her because she’s so withholding, but so is Kvothe. I really think it’s a simple case of young love with terrible circumstances and communication skills.
Agreed. Also, her need to support herself means that (whether she's an escort or not) she needs to be courting these other men. Perhaps subconsciously or otherwise, she is keeping Kvothe at arms length to protect him from getting his heart broken. As she knows full well he is in no position to support them both financially. Or perhaps I'm thinking too deeply about this 😂
Y’all are so cute and I loved hearing your thoughts on this amazing book! I low key agreed with the point about Elodin being a kind of frustrating character at times but I thought the part where Kvothe jumped off the building was hilarious! Elodin really didn’t expect him to go through with it lol but he clearly didn’t know Kvothe well enough! He was like jump off a building? Ok bet. That’s like the easiest thing someone’s asked me to do this week!
that was a reall nice video, you have a nice dynamic. I have recently convinced my partner to read the books and we discussed a bit but while he was reading it had to be so garded, in order not to spoin anything. Now I actually took notes of the questions he discussed and and I am going to badger him with that. My perspective of Denna really changed over time and rereads. My first reactions where so "in character" - would you like this person if you met them, style, and I would most probably not get along with Denna at all. But as a character, she is so interesting and I like that you need to pay attention to understand her situation better. I am really curious to see where the realtionship is going to go.
Ahaha awesome! I love that. While I was reading Jay kept wanting to bring it up but I was like nonono I don’t want any accidental spoilers!!! Our convo was much longer than the video and the video is ridiculously long 😂 it was fun to talk about it! Thanks for sharing your thoughts, I’m interested to see where things go too 👀 -K
So good video!! Loved your gf!! I am glad she doesn't know the second book, and you can totally explore with her what a neophit feels and thinks about your theories. But, does she know that you are probing?
Thank you!! I'm happy you enjoyed 😀I'm excited to see what she thinks about all the theories! I'm sure she realizes that I'm inquiring pretty closely into certain theories haha
I'm not not a crier, i'd say it takes a lot to make me cry, but some days it takes nothing. That being said, i don't normally cry to books. I've cried twice to books and both were kingkiller. The lute being smashed, and auri taking care of the plumb poisoned kvloth. Like i do love kingkiller, but its weird how i feel like im more invested in wot/stormlight characters but never actually cried for them. Not gonna touch on prose. the prose nerds can get fucked. but rothfuss does have a way of making me fucking feel. And its different than branderson. They both have their strengths, but i must admit one has made me cry while the other hasn't.
I actually found Denna to be a very feminist character and a strong woman as a whole, who goes after what she wants (hot take: she’s even my favourite character from the book)
She has such a good perspective my goodness! I agree with everything you guys are saying (cept of course I think Elodin was hilarious). And yes I always liked Denna- I completely understand where she’s coming from Also- I agree about skarpi’s stories 😬 I love learning about the lore but it was soooo long and I didn’t care at first because I wanted to just focus on Kvothe and his journey lol I almost always skip that part when I re-read. Great writing but it’s just not my thing
Guess: Ambrose is the king Kvothe will kill - there's that passage in the book explaining how Ambrose is like 12th in line to the throne now, or something. Bast is Kvothe's kid by Felurian, Reshi means father. Kvothe locked his true name in the box out of guilt, but ended up sealing his power in there along with it. Anyone else?
Also Kvothe is an unreliable narrator not because he's lying (tho he probably exaggerates some parts and cuts others), but because he can only tell the story from his point of view which is just a fraction of the whole
I would say that is one of the things that is unique and interesting about this book. It gives realism, in life you can try to see things from a different point of view. But you can only truely experience the world with you own eyes, ears and touch.
I dislike the fact that Denna is always disappearing and playing games with Kvothe. Then when she’s not playing games Kvothe is too dense to realize what’s happening.
I like Kvothe and would be his friend I didn’t realize people would not also he is not even close to being a Marry Sue he has to many issues and heart reaching trama and problems to overcome infact if he could afford a therapist that would help him greatly
Kvothe is not a Mary Sue, he’s an elite character amongst many other elite characters and there is no ability he has which isn’t vastly outstripped by another character up to and including getting his ass beat by an 8 year old girl for a couple of chapters.
Agreed. He talks about how much effort he's put into the things he's good at. Performance was his entire life as a kid. Survival and toughness was his life in Tarrant. At the University he studies for hours on end to be good at a few things. And he openly shares that there are things taught at the University he's not great, or even good, at, like alchemy. And he's obviously awful at making wise choices. I think it's just a story told from the perspective of a very talented and not so humble teenager.
I also don't predict! I don't think about it and that way everything surprises me. If I think about things and I turn out to be right, it's like I spoiled it for myself
I like Denna a lot. It's hard to articulate the why of it concisely. Her and Kvothe are very similar. I think the Chandrian are trying to die. But Haliax's name binds him to the world. By removing all evidence of his name, eventually it will be remembered for the last time and he will be able to die. THOUGH, it could be something else entirely. It's very unclear. haha I like the theory that Kote has created the Waystone to be a trap/dampener for sympathy. The environment hinders his abilities, which is why he's able to go out and kill the Escral with relative ease, but can't seem to use sympathy within the Waystone. But then it's weird that he's trying to use sympathy at all, or trying to open the thrice-locked chest without sympathy. I think the chest is a "gift" from Denna. She had a custom lute case made for him, that has a "secret" compartment, that cost more than a good lute would cost. And kvothe tells her that the case saved his life. So maybe she gave him the chest too. It's origins are ambiguous. There's just the implication that it's cost would be extravagant, but the narration implies that the speaker doesn't know.
i think that kvoth is telling the story because he is a chandrian and that his sign is that he cant lie or can only lie. By telling the story hes trying to talk in code, hes trying to clue the chronicler in on something. its comes up multiple times that every story has a bit of truth to it. so that he can kinda skirt around the rules of his sign. hes tried multiple times to do a memoir. and teh chandrian are good at hiding their signs creatively. his three days are him trying to beat around the bush because he cant tell say it outright for some reason.
I'll be honest, in regards to a TV show or a movie, I think I'd roll with the TV show, being that you could get more into it and we obviously don't want anything left out. BUT.. now, if they did extended versions for the movie, think LOTR, THEN, I think, I'd really look forward to a movie version trilogy, maybe 4 part.
Oof. Yeah it sounds to me like a lot of people are still guessing about the things I’m guessing about after only reading book one. I’m hoping I get a couple answers though 😅
6:39 Kvoathe does have empathy, though. He cares about Auri, and when he realizes how his actions affect the people he cares about, he feels bad about it. I think he just is thoughtless and doesnt think through the consequences of his actions.
katy, im sorry, but u were off the goop (literally) when u read skarpis story. It was a huge turning point in Kvothes life, it triggered his memories and everything about himself to come back and ultimately caused him to be reinspired to go to the university and find the chandrian
My take on the tv/movie debate: make into movies. Movie 1 Waystone Inn up to leaving Tarbean. Movie 2 route to University until getting news of Chandrian. Movie 3 Trebon to the end of book 1. Movie 4 lightning tree mixed with start of book 2 up to leaving for Vintas. Movie 5 From Vintas to leaving Fae. Movie 6 Fallout of Felurian and Ademre. Movie 7 From fake troopers up to end of book 2. Can’t remember where TSROST comes in but you could sprinkle a few scenes from that at the appropriate time. Doors of stone would need to be another 4 minimum!!
In spanish the title of the book The slowly regard of silent things is diferent, the title is La musica del silencio that means The music of the silence, i dont know if it could be related to the three silences that appeared in the other books or if it was a mistake in the translation, in one of the silences, i dont remember if it was the first or the second, there was a lack of music but if this translation in the title is not a mistake, is it posible that there's music in the silence?
Denna is my favourite character. i see myself in her, see someone i loved more than i could have ever expected in her, i see a lot of pain and trauma but a strong will to persevere and i have that too. she really seems to be the black sheep in the story and i appreciate that about her character. she's so flawed and yet despite that it's all told from Kvothes pov, i still gather so much from what little we see and hear of her, that is so spot on with how i myself have reacted in certain situations, against certain odds. illusive and mysterious, sure. but she's one of the most poignant characters in the book and that should not be overlooked just because her character doesn't agree with what you hope for in a main character's love interest, or even a major female role in a story.
Lovely couple 😍 My wife is currently reading TNTW and she's really into it... Is there anything better in life than your partner appreciating something you love?
Have you ever seen the theory that Denna represents the Wind itself... Also I don't think he's an unreliable narrator because of those parts where he says: I should've done that. Tha's what a hero would do. But I didn't
I have always believed that the Haliax just wants to die. And since his name has been spoken to bring him back to life, if anybody talks about him - it tethers him to this life.
I read the first book and loved it. But if I had known the situation with the third book...I would not have started it. So I'm gonna wait on A Wise Man's Fear.
The Name of the Wind was recommended to me by a family member. I read it and I loved it so I moved on to book 2. Only after book 2 did I find out that there was no conclusion to the series yet. Had I known ahead of time I would have waited too. I had already been waiting for George RR Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire to wrap up before reading The Name of the Wind. It's frustrating.
Also with Auri. I think something traumatic happened to her. But also, I think she see more than most people and that could have been a trait she already had that magic study unlocked more of. She sees what things are like. She sees the Taberlin in Kvothe and the broken boy.Through kvothes life he has used Taberlin as his avatar and I think she can see that in him and gives him things that fit or soothe that desire that Kvothe has. I think that is the same as Elodin, who pulled the question out of Kvothe that Manet asked him. I think Elodin could see it in his mind and just plucked it out. I think both Auri and Elodin have their minds even more in the spinning leaf 🍃… the way Kvothe can sometimes see the wind…they see. Like Elodin looking at wood when the masters are taking admissions, he is seeing beautiful things in the wood. Auri also, but I think in a non physical way but emotional/philosophical she can see why things are, and Elodin can see how things are. They are using different parts of their mind.

I could not agree more 😊👌🏼
I think he got it right, Kvothe is written to make one think of a mary sue, it is very understandable why people think of him as such if only fleetingly exposed to him, but he very much is not in the end.
I think Patrick Rothfuss is rolling dice for Kvothe’s decisions and what happens to him
The character Denna is someone I have so much compassion for!
100% 👌🏼
They've really been through a lot at such a young age. It makes sense that they have a weird and complicated relationship. Plus, have you seen a teenager having a healthy and stable relationship?
One can feel compassion for and still dislike a character/person. They are not mutaly exclusiv
I love Denna
Katie and I see much of the book EXACTLY the same way. The sexism in the world is needed to show how strong Denna is, while she carves out her own life. Also, there are MANY "strong" female characters, Denna, Devi, Mola, Laurian, Auri, Shehyn. Yes, they don't all have large roles, but there are already so many "main" characters, they can't all have huge role.
Bruce, we are one 😂
Captured in Words, You are very lucky to have a partner who you can love and speak to about your favorite book series. You're a lucky man.
I'm a very lucky man 🥰
Love that wink at 25:15
Let’s not spoil everything for her just yet
I've been a follower for a while now & I've always loved how much you Love the Kingkiller Chronicles! I first read it in 2009 & it has also been my favorite book/series since!
I've re-read the book several times before finding your channel, but you have inspired me to re-re-read these books, create my own theories & crack open all my copies of it beyond any binding repairs while I'm happily waiting for The Doors of Stone (I know it'll be worth the wait lol)
I ABSOLUTELY LOVE KATIES VIEWS ON EVERYTHING!
And, if you didn’t know, Jay and I have a channel we do together 😉
and I TOTALLY agree with you guys, I LOVE the University parts and would even like it if there were more University scenes in there. :)
This video was a joy! It was so nice hearing Katie’s thoughts on the book. I love this book, it’s my favorite too ❤️❤️❤️
We love a hot take 😜
Take this with a grain of salt (as I'm a guy), but I've always seen the sexism in the world as being used by rothfuss to promote themes of anti-sexism.
Basically, using the setting of a world of sexism to challenge sexism in the real world
Couldn't agree more
Absolutely 😊
Absolutely. As a women it never bothered me- it just seemed realistic 🤷🏻♀️ books that try to do the opposite are so cringe to me
Same, or even more prevelent with GrrM! You have to show it, to be able to critique and call it out as wrong!
When she said Elodin is “okay” 💔🤣 Your gasp said it all too! Nooooo Elodin!!!
Right!? Elodin didn't deserve this 😂😂
@@CapturedInWords haha!! She’s amazing though! Y’all are too cute together 🥰
I could have said worse 🤣🤣🤣
I find him great too, how could he have anticipate Kvothes stupidity when he jokingly asked him to jump?
I read Slow Regard to my wife nearly every night before bed. Auri is her fave as well. Highly recommend.
I liked it because I love Auri. But that was hard to get through for me. Patrick Rothfuss has the disclaimer at the beginning of the book and maybe I took that to heart.
I cannot wait to read it! But maybe I should get Jay to read it to me instead, that sounds so sweet 🥲
I wanted to enjoy this book so much, but... It ultimately bored me to death. Love Auri tho
Ahaha right? There's like 3 different trees associated with him and I'm not entirely sure which one is the one on the cover of book 1 😅
I laughed so many times in this video, Katie is so funny! 😂So good to see her on the main channel again! But if anyone is reading this and hasn't watched their vlog channel yet, they make some really fun videos! Would highly recommend checking out The Sunshine seekers
You think I’m funny? 🥺🥺 glad it’s not just me 😂 we don’t deserve you btw. You’re the goat. The mvp. Bless 🙏🏼
You two are so cuuuute! I've got such a nice vibe from you while wacthing this video! Thanks for that!
Good vibes only 😎😋 -K
Just don't tell her it's unfinished next time 🤣
@@niveshproag3761 right?
These books are so often recommended as YA, but I can’t even count the number of posts I’ve seen on the subreddit that boil down to “I definitely didn’t understand the story until I read this as an adult.”
When we are that young, we just don’t have the capacity to see the world from a viewpoint that is radically different from our own. Hence, teen boys reading the story can’t see beyond the idea that Denna is leading Kvothe on. They don’t consider how impossible life would be for a teen girl with no familial support. She is vulnerable and she does what she must to limit that vulnerability.
Justice for Denna!
I think it's just that Denna is basically a mirror of Kvothe, but because the book is written from Kvothe's perspective, we tend to be able to understand his behvaiour better than Denna's, even though she acts very similarely to him.
@@jonasen6709 you sir, are a genius
I really pray there will be a plot twist and this is not going down the oh so tragic lovestory route . . . I hate glorifiction of toxicity . . . (but yeah, that is just as much on him as on her)
Starting the year of Brando Sandro off right 😋
Ahaha the Kingkiller videos still won't stop, even if it is the year of Sando Branderson 😂
Isnt that technically next year because of the secret projects?
@@justfriendly7676 Technically yeah, though I'm starting a year of Sanderson on my channel this year and going into next year where I'll be making lots of Cosmere related vids
There are a lot of good/strong female characters in The Name of the Wind: Laurian/Netalia, Mola, Fela, Auri, Devi, and Denna. They each show important aspects of women's experiences.
Totally!
And they all have such different personalities (in my opinion), lives, talents etc.
I love Devi, she just says eff all to the rules and roles.
My favourite part of the book is just after Kvothe finds his troupe murdered.. Reading about his stumble into the forest and the way Rothfuss presented the numbness of Kvothe's trauma was right in the nose.
Patrick Ruthless at his finest -K
Awesome video! Was really fun to see a new reader's perspective, I was not expecting her to like it so much tbh. I feel like KKC inspires intense emotion, like you either love it or hate it depending on how you feel about Kvothe and the writing style. I read both books two years ago and I keep coming back to your videos, they are always so polished and well made. Thanks for helping us get through the wait...
I wasn’t expecting to like it so much either, but I’m so excited I did 😋
This video was so sweet, her perspective on it was simply refreshing!

i had so much fun with this video! you guys are amazing! 💛
Thank you!! 😀
He doesn’t deserve the hate. Like sorry he wrote a masterpiece? 😋
Best book ever! Can’t wait to read the next 😁

I read The Name of the Eind just this month. It's one of my favourites now. I probably won't read the rest until Rothfuss releases the final one.

Awesome video, guys!! I agree with most of Katie's views. Except Elodin, ofc x) I'm super curious what she'll think about WMF hahaha that book tends to turn people's opinions on their heads :D
Hopefully book 2 will change my mind on Elodin! I’m gonna start reading this week
It took me seven minutes to love this video, now i know more things i didnt knew about my favorite book
Ngl, KKC is still my favorite series too. It sucks that we have to wait for DoS but when it finally comes out I will be very happy 🙏
I also liked the sequel trilogy, TLJ especially. Tho I will say that TRoS was still not a great ending
Oh man, I really liked the parents. lol
agreed
I do generally like them as a couple actually, some of his comments just put me off a bit 😂😅
I completely sympathize with him. To me the arrogance people are referring to is more of a performative thing

Truer words have never been spoken "if he doesn't finish it, you know Sanderson will......"

We’re the same 🥰🥰🥰
I love everytime she talks about book 2 he looks at the camera
Nice vid man, keep it going.
I love Denna. People don’t like her because she’s so withholding, but so is Kvothe. I really think it’s a simple case of young love with terrible circumstances and communication skills.
Simply and unfortunately misunderstood

Ahaha “ok bet” 😂😂😂 well when you put it like that 😜 I’m glad someone finally agrees he is frustrating at times
that was a reall nice video, you have a nice dynamic.

Thank you!! I'm happy you enjoyed 😀I'm excited to see what she thinks about all the theories! I'm sure she realizes that I'm inquiring pretty closely into certain theories haha
This was the shortest 42 minute video ever. I enjoy every moment.
Omg I don’t cry from books either but the part with Auri taking care of Kvothe when he’s poisoned got me!
I actually found Denna to be a very feminist character and a strong woman as a whole, who goes after what she wants (hot take: she’s even my favourite character from the book)
Elodin’s quote about edges was the first thing that came to my mind when I first saw the Grand Canyon
She has such a good perspective my goodness! I agree with everything you guys are saying (cept of course I think Elodin was hilarious). And yes I always liked Denna- I completely understand where she’s coming from
Also- I agree about skarpi’s stories 😬 I love learning about the lore but it was soooo long and I didn’t care at first because I wanted to just focus on Kvothe and his journey lol I almost always skip that part when I re-read. Great writing but it’s just not my thing
Oh wow me? Perspective? 😋 I’m glad we’re on the same page! I’m hoping book 2 changes my mind on Elodin!
I- 🤯
Damn I wish I did not just read this
Now that is one cute couple 🥰
There is no such thing as too many Kingkiller videos in a row! :D
Kingkiller forever
Also Kvothe is an unreliable narrator not because he's lying (tho he probably exaggerates some parts and cuts others), but because he can only tell the story from his point of view which is just a fraction of the whole
I would say that is one of the things that is unique and interesting about this book. It gives realism, in life you can try to see things from a different point of view. But you can only truely experience the world with you own eyes, ears and touch.
Elodin making Kvothe jump off a roof was just n o t c o o l. Also when we learn it was for nothing 😂
Lol I was like wait what just happened? 😂😂 -K
I dislike the fact that Denna is always disappearing and playing games with Kvothe. Then when she’s not playing games Kvothe is too dense to realize what’s happening.

Glad you both enjoyed that. can't wait for the video theorizing about this one... ;p
I like Kvothe and would be his friend I didn’t realize people would not also he is not even close to being a Marry Sue he has to many issues and heart reaching trama and problems to overcome infact if he could afford a therapist that would help him greatly
I completely agree. And so what if he tried to light someone on fire right? He’s our bro
To be fair that Sexist Professor had it coming lol
Yes. Just yes. Absolutely. 100%. No kidding
I also don't predict! I don't think about it and that way everything surprises me. If I think about things and I turn out to be right, it's like I spoiled it for myself
Right??
@@thesunshineseekers books also just don't fully surprise me xD plot twists never shock me. Only movies or TV shows get me. It's sad.
@MaddieBruce too smart for your own good 😜
Or maybe Bast is the child of Kvothe and the Fae. Bas short for being Bastard, He even mentions how Fae are about their bloodlines and families.
🤭🤭🤭
Kilvin is by far my favorite character. I think mostly because of Nick Podehl's voice for him but he's just great.
He’s amazing!!!
It's very unclear. haha
I like the theory that Kote has created the Waystone to be a trap/dampener for sympathy.
Now those are some good theories!!
i think that kvoth is telling the story because he is a chandrian and that his sign is that he cant lie or can only lie.
I named my first DnD character after Auri. They are nothing like her in appearance but her heart definitely came through in his character.
My wife is currenrly reading book 2 and she loves it!
What so you think about all the lose ends? I think none of them gets an answer in book two 🧐
Oof. Yeah it sounds to me like a lot of people are still guessing about the things I’m guessing about after only reading book one. I’m hoping I get a couple answers though 😅
6:39
Kvoathe does have empathy, though.
👀👀👀
Very interesting!! It definitely sounds like it could be connected to the 3 silences! I hope it wasn't just a translation mistake 😅
@@CapturedInWordsI hope that too, it's really a good question to ask to Patrick
Lovely couple 😍
My wife is currently reading TNTW and she's really into it...
Is there anything better in life than your partner appreciating something you love?
Have you ever seen the theory that Denna represents the Wind itself... Also I don't think he's an unreliable narrator because of those parts where he says: I should've done that. Tha's what a hero would do. But I didn't
Good analogy... and yes exactly.
I did not 🌬🤯 I think he’s as reliable as anyone else relaying their past. Not his fault he’s great at telling his 😅
@@thesunshineseekers Or he is actually a Chandrian himself and so he doesn't sleep, die and forget...

This really made me want to re-read Kingkiller. Gotta finish Wheel of Time first though lol
People are all about a slow regard but nobody ever talks about the lightning tree.
That's true! I should probably make a video on the lightning tree soon
Jay has let me down greatly. Did not even know that existed
@@CapturedInWords that would be awesome.
@@thesunshineseekers I don’t think most people know about it. It’s a short story in a big book. It’s called Rogues.
@@ZombieIca 😮 is it it’s own thing or related to kingkiller?
I have always believed that the Haliax just wants to die. And since his name has been spoken to bring him back to life, if anybody talks about him - it tethers him to this life.
The morning we wake up and hear he published the third book lol
Ok, so the girlfriend's voice (didn't hear her name) is EXACTLY how I hear Auri"s voice in my head.
Light Book 2 spoiler:
Jay's expression as he looks directly into the camera at 25:17 😂🥲
You need to put a ring on that. Don't find too many women like her.
I read the first book and loved it. But if I had known the situation with the third book...I would not have started it. So I'm gonna wait on A Wise Man's Fear.
That’s fair. But I think it’s important to remember that books are still important and impactful even without an ultimate ending
Kingkiller chronicles is the best literary work In my lifetime. Irrefutably the best books I’ve ever read
