There's also the point that (adult) Kvothe cannot play music anymore. Like, remember when he swore ON HIS GOOD HAND that he wouldn't try to find who Denna's patron was, BUT if he did, then he technically lied to Denna, thus "LOSING" his hand. Meaning that the fact that the lute is broken in front of the open-mouthed face could also symbolize the price Kvothe had to pay for his lie!!

When you described the Roman Holiday, I could already tell that it’s connected to Kvothe and Denna, since both of them have secrets kept from each other, and Kvothe once sworn his lute-playing hand (his right hand, basically) if he break his promise to Denna for seeking out her mentor. Breaking his promise to her is akin to lying to her, so he lost his ability to play the lute.

I also think its worth mentioning when Kote is telling Bast and Chronicler about Denna's version of Lanre's history, he mentions how in the current world it is a widespread song and very popular. If the chandrian were focused on snuffing out lies it would certainly not be as widespread.

It didn't have names in it like arlidens so it wasn't dangerous or trackable? Then again the mauthens farm was just a pot with pictures as far as we know. So not sure how they knew. But also master ash was there too and helped write the song so that's suspicious.

Also skarpys version was one seemingly nobody else knew, probably because it talks about the chandrian origins. Also, how could a very popular song talk good about the chandrian? Everybody knows the chandrian are scary and evil and all that stuff, no one would like smt like that

Does anyone thought that while we all wait for the third book, people are creating their own stories and theories just like it happens in the thrilogy? A truth travel from town to town but it loose the details and shape into a different story. Just like it happens between the story that Khvote heard and the song that Dena did.
I don't think that Patrick is delaying the book so people can come up with their own stories. But it's a nice thing to have while waiting for the 3er book. So thanks to all theory creators :D

One thing id like to say about Skarpi not being hunted by the chandrian, the adem told him a story about the chandrian, and told him not to repeat it for a thousand days or something, so if skarpi doesn't tell the story often it wouldn't come up on the chandrian's radar, so to speak.

One thing got me thinking, the whole “pulling out your eye” thing with the skin dancers.
Someone does lose an eye in Wise Man’s Fear. When Dagon caught up with Caudicus, Caudicus “killed four of the Maer’s personal guard and cost Dagon an eye.”
Could be nothing, but everyone talked about what creepy vibes Dagon gave off. And, Caudicus's motive is pretty unclear too.

I think Kvothe killing the fake Edema Ruh was very much an Anakin Skywalker / Darth Vader moment. The very first thing he does when he gets his sword from the Aden is butcher a bunch of people… deserving as they were, his actions were motivated from hatred. Based on all his violent comments and threats we see throughout the story before this… he just seems like a ticking time bomb of impulsive rage. Vashet even saw the darkness in Kvothe and savagely beat him for it during his apprenticeship. I don’t think we can trust him as the narrator of his own story. He has even given constant hints at his tendency to embellish and inflate his reputation.

love love love your theories .Thank you ,they keep the fandom for me alive.
Im reading the stormlight archives and theyve reminded me why l value “questioning everything ” so much ...Its easy to take an authors word as law when the storyline seem to imply certain things .When kvothes father is spoken of hes a great leader and man. Talented and very good at finding the true story of things ....l even took a step further and mentally canonised that his ability was “knack” level ....That fact cemented that the Chandrian were killing to stop the spread kf the truth ... but if the fact that kvothes dads story was right is questioned the. theres room to say maybe the chandrian kill for lies...
That its just generally lies about their story tbeyre killing coz of makes the theory hardto swallow fully.
I think coz every kid in the chronicles grows up singing songs of the chandrian the songs must have some innacuracy simply because a story or song is never passed down decades without lies and embillishmemts -- so why aren't all kids killed by the Chandrian ? I think its a specific lie thats too close to the truth that makes tbe Chandrian kill ....hang with me please...

I think you're onto something here, but I suspect the connection is more explicit than you've described here. There are many connections between the Norse story of Fenrir, who bites off the god Tyr's hand. I believe that Kvothe will lose his hand, possibly to Denna's patron, and Denna will heal it with a Rhinna flower from the Cthae's tree. Take a look at this excerpt:
“My good right hand?” I suggested.
“Only one hand?” she asked, playfulness creeping back into her tone. She reached out and took both of my hands in her own, turning them over and making a show of inspecting them closely. “I like the left one better,” she decided. “Swear by that one.”
“My good left hand?” I asked dubiously.
“Fine,” she said. “The right. You’re such a traditionalist.”
“I swear I won’t attempt to uncover your patron,” I said bitterly. “I swear it on my name and my power. I swear it by my good left hand. I swear it by the ever-moving moon.”
Naden, from Ademre, has a ruined hand and speaks to Kvothe about how he shouldn't fear losing his hand:
Naden held up his ruined hand again. “I could have gained none of these things if I had lived in fear of losing my hand. If I flinched and cringed, I would never have been accepted into the Latantha. Never made the second stone. I would be whole, but I would be less than I am now.”
Remember what Denna said to Kvothe when they were discussing which flower they'd bring each other?
“What flower would you bring me?” I teased, thinking to catch her off guard.
“A willow blossom,” she said without a second’s hesitation. I thought for a long minute.
“Do willows have blossoms?” She looked up and to the side, thinking. “I don’t think so.”
“A rare treat to be given one then.” I chuckled.
The Cthae tree is described as being a slightly different Willow tree.... With blossoms:
It resembled a vast spreading willow, with broader leaves of a darker green. The tree had deep, hanging foliage scattered with pale, powder-blue blossoms
When Bast describes the flowers that can heal anything, the first thing Kvothe does is look down at his hands:
“The flowers are a panacea, Reshi. They can heal any illness. Cure any poison. Mend any wound.”
Kvothe raised his eyebrows at that. “Ah,” he said, looking down at his folded hands on the tabletop. “I see. I can understand how that might draw a person in, though they knew better.”
Lastly, the Cthae, who may be Encanis, giving him a new hand is eluded to during the Tarbean festival where the man dressed as Encanis gives Kvothe a pair of gloves:
He was a form of darkness, black hooded cloak, black mask, black gloves. Encanis stood in front of me holding out a bright bit of silver that caught the moonlight.
“Take my gloves too.” He pulled them off and pushed them against my chest.

I'm sure it's a common theory, but Kvoth's latest Lute is going to break in Doors, specifically along it's neck.
Kvoth has lost two lutes already... one crushed and one with a shattered bowl, none with a broken neck.
We know the engineering in a Lute neck can be incredible.
Ambrose knows how precious Lutes are to Kvoth and could afford .
Kvoth haggles with the shopkeep over his 2nd lute having a "sour neck".
The Lute case is far too fine for the current lute and can be reconfigured.
Rothfuss stated in 2018 that "the neck is long (reminiscent of an opharion)"
Now the new name of the wind art shows lute with a broken neck. (Though it does looks like Arliden's)
It's a lot pointing in the same direction.
Will it's replacement be an Antressor? maybe an 8 string played by Illien? And why doesn't Kvothe have a lute @ the waystone?

      @matthewspencer2094 Před rokem

@@gholamdapantaloonsniffer8218 Can't see him abandoning a lute... ever.
He has kept other things from his travels and views lutes like family and a part of himself... He likes to move on from things, places and people like they mean nothing when he's hurt or scared... but it's always just a show with people or things he truly treasures.
In the waystone he shows this via the chest, folly, notes from his manuscripts, books relating to the university e.t.c.
In his earlier life we see it in how often he avoids people he loves after any argument... he doesn't want to be vulnerable so tries to deny or abandon attachments and pretends its because he's an Edema Ruh and a nomad.. Denna is much the same so the Severen argument leaves them both acting childishly.
I think he would sooner loose a limb than part with a lute... or a loved one.
Kvoth has the maturity of a child and too much trauma around loss of his environment, treasures, and loved ones. It's like a sickness. He wouldn't sell or throw a lute away of his own volition... unless it was forced on him to save someone that means even more to him than his music.

There is also a Hindi God of Moon called Chandra. His 27 wives were the daughters of Daksha. Because He was cursed by Daksha because he loved a Wive more than the other Wives.

I still say the Cthae is trying to get free somehow, of something. It doesn’t make sense for it just to be this malevolent entity that sits in a tree all day, especially not when it seems to have a body separate from the tree.
Seems pretty clear to me too that the butterflies are the way that Rothfuss is going to illustrate the Cthae’s power for us. In books you always need to illustrate a power like that with some kind of mechanism. Hence the butterflies. It even says the last red one falls right as Kvothe got to him, saying it offends his aesthetic, or coyly saying the red ones are positioned to interrupt its planned vision.
I’m not sure how setting Kvothe up to take an L the way you suggest would benefit the Cthae long term, but it falls in line with what I think for the most part. 🤷🏻‍♂️
I just want the book already. People had waited like 7 years since book 1 when I got into the series (I think), and now we’re way out here lol.

Considering that after the fall of Rome, many Italian cities lost nearly 80% of their population and could fit everyone left inside an amphitheater. Which is what they did as they built homes along the steps using the walls as safety within their own city. The idea of it being a storm drain is incredibly likely as the Romans often used marbled decorations for structural uses, which would later lead to gargoyles being water fountains and the like.

Great theory, it would be an excellent twist to have the Chandrian turn out to be a force for good. Kvothe says that behind the four plate door he found what he was looking for but not what he expected: I’ve always assumed that he found his own family (via links to Lanre/Haliax), because beneath the desperation for money and fame, and the search for power and knowledge, there is a deep yearning for the family he lost when his troupe were killed. I love the idea that beneath the shadowed cowl, Haliax looks like Kvothe with red hair and/or green eyes.

  • @murkyburke
    @murkyburke Před rokem

It would make more sense that the Chandrian would hunt people who touch on the truth rather than falsehoods. "The wrong kind of songs" doesn't mean the song was incorrect. Names have power in Pat's world, so it's much better to hide the truth and fade into obscurity as boogeymen in children's stories. The Amyr probably also work toward obscuring the truth so that they can work in secret.

Great theory! The resemblance of the stone and the book is uncanny, maybe you're on the right track!
On a side note, I would love a video summarizing and comparing the different stories about Lanre, Telhu, Encanis and the seven cities (Trapis', Skarpi's, the one that Kvothe barely hears, Denna's, Ademre's, etc) to have a more complete comparison and try to make connections. Like for example, in the Trapis one we have a few new namedrops, and in the Skarpi too, also mentions of the cities. I don't know, maybe there is something there

The catheee definitely got what it wanted, I think it chose not to bite him knowing Feulurian wouldn't let him leave or worse.
So instead poisoned his mind, he's so amused by the fact Kolth wants to kill the Chandrian I agree with your idea. The 7 sealed Jax or maintain the seal. Or the 7 are not working for the Catheee but are working towards parellel evil means and end goals.
As they say, "you'd fire like an arrow from the quill of the catheee" but chronicler is right. There's only so much influence a catheee has with it's words. And while it can see all futures to make the most damage it's very likely things are only sped up or slowed down by it's words.
They try to destroy and hide all knowledge around them and knowledge around the 7. Likely because the stories are so linked.

    • @user-qi7oc7rm9m
      @user-qi7oc7rm9m Před 2 lety +4

There's a theory out there that Iax embedded a part of his true name into Lanre as part of a Faustian bargain. Lanre gets to borrow Iax's insane Naming abilities, but is under his control to some extent. Lanre accepts this bargain because he hopes that it'll allow him to bring back Lyra. As part of the deal, he has to work to break Iax free from behind the Doors of Stone.
It would explain why Haliax's name has Iax in it. Plus, when you consider that breath (assuming that the "hal" part is intended to equate to the Latin word for breath) is required to speak, sing, and, well, to name, it makes even more sense.

The only major hole I see in it is that Rothfuss himself has stated that the latin language never existed in this world, and that's why you don't find latin derivatives in any of the names/words. Perhaps he said that just to throw us off the scent, but many of my assumptions have been operating off of that statement.
