Review: 2020 Toyota Corolla (Manual + Auto)

  • I review the all-new 2020 Toyota Corolla in both the SE manual trim as well as the XSE trim with the CVT. With a starting price of just $19,500 before destination, the new Corolla offers a totally new look, more upscale interior and much better driving dynamics all for a very competitive price. And with excellent fuel economy and reliability, the costs should stay low during ownership as well. What do you think of the new Corolla? Thanks to Toyota for providing this opportunity!

      To each their own. I drove only NA but I now have the 2018 Civic Sport with the manual and it’s great. It’s pretty damn quick and fun to drive. Also get 45 MPG on the highway quite easily, just saying.

    • @NashKetchum
      @NashKetchum Před 5 lety +2

      @@ViralityoflifeI've seen those numbers, and I've gotta say something doesn't add up. Honda's Civic SI allegedly gets 38 mpg on the highway putting out 205 hp with a turbo, 2mpg more than a naturally aspirated corolla and as much or better than any other econobox on the market? Yea, sounds fishy. Someone's gonna get hit with another lawsuit it seems.

      @Viralityoflife Před 5 lety

      npitu04 how? I even have a Hondata tune on my civic now (+6 psi) and I’m still getting the same numbers.
      It has to do with the way the engine is tuned mixed with the gear ratio. A more powerful engine doesn’t have to work as hard to keep going under the same conditions.

    • @NashKetchum
      @NashKetchum Před 5 lety +5

      Mike H a more powerful engine uses more fuel. And the SI engine is a 1.5l, so it’s an overworked tiny little thing. Again, it doesn’t add up

    Matt! I have had my SE man for 6mos. What sold me was your review (1430) . Yes, it's a blast to drive! Way way way... better handling and aerodynamics than the old model. 170hp in a Corolla = FUN. Cool feature no one told me about was the car holds itself in place until the tires turn. No roll backs when starting on a hill. As a skilled driver I felt a tad insulted at first, but now I love that feature. Especially street parking in the winter. Great review. Pete in Canada.

      U can't do that on the newer Toyotas. If your headlights are off, then your DRL is off. Your DRL is only on if you have headlights turned on or in auto mode.

    • @PhillyFan20
      @PhillyFan20 Před 5 lety +3

      Newer Toyota's have auto headlights. Once set to auto, headlights come on automatically when it's dark or you're driving in inclement weather and the wiper blades are on. Great safety feature.
      I see idiots in Nissan Rogues do that because those DRLs can't be turned off. They don't realize that all lights aren't turned on.

    • @davinp
      @davinp Před 5 lety +3

      I leave it automatic mode. Set and forget it so. So, the DRL go off and the headlights come on at night automatically. I've seen people either don't have lights or just have their DRL when its getting dark. For safety reasons, I think the government should require auto headlights on all cars so that those iditots don' t be driving without lights or just DRL when it's not quite dark.

    Matt, This is a terrific review of an impressive car. The SE manual may be the best Corolla 'sports sedan' that we have ever seen. With so many fundamental improvements built into this generation, it is such a pity the interior dimensions of the new sedan/hatch won't fit taller drivers and passengers. Watching you gleefully shift through the gears makes me wonder again why Toyota won't build a manual Camry to further enhance the vastly improved dynamics of its TNGA platform. For the record, I will note that Canadians also get a base L with a #manual for thousands less than the SE. Lastly, you deserve credit for disclosing the fact you are the guest of Toyota at events like this. Disclaimers like that should be a mandatory part of every CZcams review.

It seems particularly evasive of Toyota to not only not offer Android Auto yet, but to not even disclose whether the current infotainment system will allow being upgraded, later. The interior quality has really improved on the 2020 + and is a very welcome change. These commuter cars do not need to go fast or be sporty, but comfort has always been lacking and am so glad they finally did something about it. Is one of the reasons I just bought a new 22 and am really enjoying it so far, it's only got just a lil over 300mi and am in the process of breaking it in. It's what I love about buying new, I know what's been done to it and will break it in right. The armrests are padded and made of a nice n soft material, plus the dash isn't hard plastic any longer either and have really changed it all up a lot

Now, they just need to add it to their trucks... and bring back something like the old mid 90s Nissan hardbody compact trucks. Those were so awesome. Great video... manual cvt has nothing on the true driving pleasure of a REAL manual, with a clutch. You have to have a clutch to really FEEL the joy of driving.

    Just bought the 2020 corolla se 6mt, the iMT literally makes this car so easy to drive, you don't even have to touch the gas when down shifting. I keep that off but its nice to have for road trips or just those days. Infotainment is great, except there isnt ANDROID AUTO yet and they told me it had it. Licensing issues need to be addressed and I'm hoping it comes to my car :(. The 6speed does have long throws and second gear is a bit odd shifting into, but it's a solid transmission that's easy for beginners and easy to feel the gears. Very nice car, and I'm glad I bought it. Will be getting the cross bars and praying for android auto.

I did like the look overall, 18" wheels are beauty, and the safety suite with everything standard, and wireless charging pad. The hatch is really small in the backseat, and something like the Honda fit has much more usable cargo capacity than the Corolla hatch, but if max MPG and comfort for 1 or 2 people are your game, this car is definitely worth a look. I had planned on buying a Mazda6 manual this year but that is gone so I was then going to get another Mazda3 sedan with manual but it isn't offered either. I love the way my 06 drives, it is fun. Which Toyota drives better... the 6sp sedan or hatchback?

    I owned a 2005 Corolla XRS manual. So much fun to drive the only gripe I had is engine would stall at about 2k rpm on cold start and on stop and go traffic. The dealership said there was no recall for my model. Regardless, I would still buy another Corolla, maybe an automatic.

    I have a 2018 se, nice little car, 2600 miles and I have a rattle in the dash and my mpg isn’t as good as it’s supposed to be, lot of road noise. I like the cvt so far, the engine runs like a top, over all its a great little grocery getter and looks sporty.

    I wonder how it stacks up performance wise against the 2005-06 Corolla XRS with its 6 speed manual and 8,200 rpm redline from the Lotus spec 2zz engine.

    • @Deepestdrip
      @Deepestdrip Před 5 lety

      Short answer: It doesn't. The XRS was about 500 pounds lighter, with similar power and way better gearing.
      Used to drive a 6 speed celica GTS and now drive a 2020 6 speed SE Corolla. I love it, but I miss my leather seats and 8400 rpm redline

    From the title I thought the 2020 Corolla has both manual and auto mode, but realized it's a review of both the manual and automatic. I would like to have a car that has both manual and automatic especially when you share a car maybe with your partner and you drive manual but he/she drives auto, vice versa, or you share the car with your parents, siblings, whatever, and have different preferences on the transmission, you have the option to switch modes.
    But as I watched this video, the CVT version actually has manual mode which is interesting. Are there pedals on the left and right of the steering wheel to shift up and down? Even without a clutch, is it still more engaging to drive compared to a full automatic CVT?

    Nice car overall! Pretty sporty if I may say so but I like the hatchback better. The Corolla is known for its reliability, however, I wonder what the crash test results are as not many car manufacturers come close to Subaru crash test results. Just curious.

  • @albertoramos-izquierdo9438

    Man I would love to give my Focus ST car build status and daily a top XSE trim Corolla even with this fancy CVT. I've seen some reviewers say it will hold gear in sport mode and actually downshift and upshift reasonably quick to have a little fun? If so, this would be a no brayner for me.

      IMO, if you want the most higher trim of Corolla (XSE) then go for Forte GT (Here in Canada it is fully loaded) and vice- versa. 2020 Corolla price jump from SE to XSE is too high, however less fun to drive compared to Forte GT (i.e hp 169 vs 201) which you can get it with almost same price (there is no manual option for GT in Canada tho and some time its a deal breaker). Because of the reliability of corolla, the resale value will potentially hold more value than any other brands and as resale value usually does not differ much from trim to trim (most of the old car buyers don’t bother about trims rather than the model and brand), lower trims to XSE will allow you more bang of your buck after couple of years! BTW, according to me, 2020 Forte GT (most higher trim of Forte) is way better (i.e interior and exterior styling, features, infotainment, warranty, road noise etc) in almost every sectors than 2020 Corolla XSE except the reliability that is well known for all the Toyota cars (I do respect Toyota, I believe no brands can beat Toyota in terms of reliability, I had Toyota in past) in which area Kia is coming forward as well (please see the reliability rating of last few years on small sedan cars). However, XSE and Forte GT both are very good cars. If you can afford, get any one from these two based on your preference! Taste varies person to person! BTW Enjoy mate!

    Corolla has always been a conservative car, focused on comfort. It isn't a sporty performance car and bold design, but it's a low fuel consumption, great value for resale and very reliable, with low maintenance cost. For this reason Corolla is the top selling car in the world.
