here comes a novel but i swear it's worth reading! the trailing plant that was the bathroom is called a philodendron hederaceum, or "heart leaf philodendron" :) I definitely recommend getting a small light meter to gauge where certain plants will be happy. you can get really cheap water/light meters online and they're great! snake plants don't mind being a bit root-bound so no need to re pot until its really bursting. when you up-pot, keep it to 2" larger each time to avoid root rot. zz's are very prone to rot and only need to be watered when the thick stems start to wrinkle, since they grow from rhizomes that hold a lot of water. snake plants are the same way. FLF tend to drop leaves any time their conditions change so try to keep it in the same place with a consistent watering schedule for best results. hoya and string of hearts do best in brighter light, but some hoyas prefer indirect light and are prone to burning. hoyas also prefer to get a bit root bound, and when they fill out the pot and are allowed to get completely dry between waterings, they can start to bloom! treat SOH and hoyas kind of like succulents and only water when the leaves lose their plumpness and feel limp/start to wrinkle a bit. most trailing plants can be watered based on when their leaves start to curl inwards, but make sure the soil is mostly dry or it could also be a sign of overwatering! cebu blue and monstera adansonii (pronounced "add-an-so-nee-eye" AKA swiss cheese monstera) are climbers, so if you want the leaves to get big you can set them up with a moss or coco coir pole and their aerial roots will attach to the pole. as they grow upwards, the leaves will get bigger! they're fine trailing but in nature they love to climb upright. monsteras in general love to climb and the leaves will get larger and develop more holes with each new leaf as they climb. ferns and calatheas/ctenanthes ("ten-an-thee") need a lot of humidity generally so they're great bathroom plants if your bathroom gets enough bright indirect light. peperomias and zz's are some of the few plants you can propagate just from a single leaf without a node, or even just a piece of the leaf! they will grow roots and "pups" if you place the leaf in water. trailing jade is indeed what that hanging guy is called! just like regular jade plants, they only need water when the leaves get limp and wrinkled or they can rot very easily. they can also be propagated by laying a leaf on dry soil and planting when little pink roots form, which often grow themselves right into the soil. once they are rooted, water very sparingly.
make sure to look into the toxicity of all of your plants--dieffenbachias and aglaonemas (chinese evergreens) are highly toxic to pets as are many others, so be sure to double check which need to be kept far from any animals.
some fun plants to check out based on what you have already: raven zz plants are just like the regular but the leaves come in bright green and turn almost black when they mature. whale fin snake plants (or sansevieria masoniana) are just as easy to care for and their leaves are huge and prehistoric looking. sansevieria bantel sensation and moonshine have beautiful colors and the same care as other snake plants.

Don’t replant your plants when you get them from the nursery right away. It causes extra stress to the plant. I would wait at least a week before replanting.

    • @Weirder_the_better
      @Weirder_the_better Před 4 lety +15

A lot of times, you can wait even longer. Bigger pot just means more soil and more chance that you’ll overwater it. Save time and money and keep it in the nursery container as long as possible, imo!

And I have to water them more often than most because they are soaking up so much light and growing so enthusiastically. They look like outdoor Californian spiders, not weak indoor Canadian spiders ;0) My Snake plants are in the same area but not directly under the lamps, which is enough for them. Quick tip: don’t rush to depot plants unless they have roots pushing out from the bottom as that can cause you to over water / root rot.

A few things from a fellow plant enthusiast:
-string of hearts need a lot of light and shouldn’t be in the low/medium light part of your chart
-spider plants and fiddle leaf figs are high light. that spider plant on the top of your cabinet will not do well there, the reason your flf probably burned it’s leaf is because you have to slowly move plants into higher light conditions
-pebbles aren’t adequate drainage! They just raise the water table in the pot. Definitely like the plastic nursery pot inside of the cache pot idea way more than rocks

It’s lovely that you have cuttings from plants that became family heirlooms of sorts, e.g. your philodendron scandans micans from the 70s!
I have to agree with everyone who’s saying to keep your new plants in their nursery pots, to not cause them more stress.
And would like to add that you should quarantine your plants for about 2 weeks, before placing them near others. Because even if you check the soil and the plant before buying it, as to not bring in pests and infest everything.
The montera adonsonii (or at least it’s written something like that) “swiss cheas plant” is a great viner! But actually prefers to clime so if you have it hanging the spaces between leaves will get wider and the leaves will stay quite small, so you have to trim then to stay full. Or so I’ve heard.

For the philodendron in the bathroom, if it was taken as a cutting from your dads bedroom plant in the 70s it’s actually technically the same plant! All plant cuttings are actually creating clones of the original plant 🤓 as a fellow plant enthusiast this makes me love plants even more because I like to think they are immortal!

For your bathroom - I think you can get Prayer Plants (Calathea) in Canada. They like light but not direct sun, and they love moisture on their leaves (but only sporadically on their soil). I have one in my bathroom and it thrives there - though I spray the leaves with water twice a week as well. The leaves lift up to the sky and drop down again, every day, (like they pray a while,) and have such gorgeous colouring (dark green with a red stripe and bright lime green stripes).

I'm from North Carolina, everyone I know calls the snake plant a mother in law plant (long sharp tongue ) lol! I have learned over the years that if I put a tray under my plants I don't ruin my wood/paint under my plants, because the damp pots will do that even with a built in bottom on them. I know I've found them at the thrift stores around here. And some times I use a pretty plate under them too. Just a thought for your beautiful new windows in your beautiful new home!

You should really consider getting the app “Planta” you do have to pay (I think $30 a year) but it is SOOO worth it you put all of your plants on it and it tells you when to water, fertilize, and repot etc. you can name them and take pictures for progress. The best thing is you can check your light in the house to see if that plant will thrive or not!! There is so much more to it but you should really check it out!!

Your bathroom goals are the same as mine! Also I've seen people say the tip to not repot the same day you get em, but also when I get a new plant I give it a few days staying in the isolation zone in case it's carrying any pests/diseases from the nursery (you never know) and for the same reason it's good to not have plants touching each other, if one gets sick it'll likely infect any other plants it's touching :)
I say all this but also I'm a bad plant mom, I have killed 2 pothos in my time haha

Your plants look very happy! Just wanted to tell you about some LED "grow" lights that fit in normal fixtures, don't get very hot, are very cheap to run, burn for MANY hours, and are not all that expensive to buy. My apartment is very dark, so my low light plants (spiders and snakes ;0) are under these bulbs, and they love it - the spiders are huge! I use the NOMA full spectrum LED Grow bulbs, which are about $5 each. (Sadly, I just checked and they are out of stock at Canadian Tire. There are other brands, but I've only used these.) The light is full spectrum, so not too warm or cool, and would make good lighting for you in your bathroom, too. Thanks for another terrific video.
