Just in case someone is trying this tutorial in Blender 2.8 + , the light instancing is different from 2.79
For the lights this was a lifesaver:
    1 Create a light and a curve.
2 Convert the curve to Mesh.
3 Select the Light go to >> object >> Relations >> Parent (here, put the curve).
    4 GO to the Curve >>Object >> Instancing >>Verts.
For the lights model it self it was a little different:
    1 Create a light and a curve.
2 Convert the curve to Mesh.
3 Select the Light go to >> object >> Relations >> Parent (here, put the curve)>> Parent type 3 Vertices

I've been using Blender for probably well over five years, but I STILL inevitably end up learning something when I run through your videos. Sometimes that's a neat trick (like bolting the cables to the wall with a duplicated ring) and sometimes that's something as fundamental as a keyboard shortcut I never knew existed. Thank you so much for making these.

The third rail is usually used to power subways.
It just transports electricity that the train can use for the engine.
You cant power subways with batterys. The volune of top tier batterys you would need for a 30km ride exceeds the volume of the whole train.

You can use cycles by reducing the rendering quality but it'll be less nice to see or you keep a high quality for rendering but you'll need to wait for half an hour or more, but real CG artists are used to wait so that's the price to pay : to not use your computer while rendering. But the final result might be amazing.

IN answer to your question? what is a 3rd rail. Subway trains function on electricity. Subway trains have what's called a shoe, its a piece of metal that makes direct contact with the the middle of the 3rd rail. and transfers the power of the 3rd rail to the train motors. The 3rd rail can have anywhere from 200 to 800 VOLTS. At a certain point, (and I don't know the exact number), the volts actually act like a magnet and will draw you (human being) to it. Like to magnets attracting, it will attract you, (you have to be very close to it, like inches away), so if your standing 3 feet to it, its not gonna pull you; however, if you put your hands 2 inches away, you will not be able to pull off it. Resulting in electrocution. Remember your heart and body functions on electrical impulses. Disrupt the impulse, you die :). (that's basically it in a nut shell) s

I have the normals inside and the faces at 64 - basically just following along. Not sure what I'm missing because it seem so simple, but its distorted. Thanks in advance for any help.

    • @jiexu2690
      @jiexu2690 Před 5 lety +1

I have the same problem. Even when I applied rotation to the cylinder. My solution is to let the curve be in its original born position, not changing its rotation. And change all the other objects like the cylinder to match the curve direction. Then use curve modify to the cylinder, it would work. But I'm not sure this could work in all the future curve problems, like what if I have to change the born direction of the curve in some complicated situation....

The thing I am experimenting with right now is to make a sphere into an emission instead of using actual lights. I just tried making a simple tunnel with a cylinder like in the video with the Nurbs curve and made a sphere then used the Array modifier on it to match the segments of the tunnel then applied the Emission shader to it and rendered it in cycles. It worked. The cylinder and UV sphere took on the curved shape of the Nurbs curve and the spheres turned into lights with the emission lit the inside of the tunnel.
