My change in lifestyle and the time I took to focus on recovery has helped my physical and mental stamina a lot. Mercadian Masques block is when I started playing Magic over 20 years ago. My first deck was a preconstructed mono black Mercenary deck from Nemesis. Good memories and good times haha

Thanks for this wonderful video. I started playing right as masques was releasing, and all the history in here played to my nostalgia. It’s certainly one of the most under-appreciated sets of all time. I even opened a foil port (insane little-kid-luck), and the shop owner talked me into trading it to him for store credit, which I promptly blew on a bunch of terrible Timmy cards. Masques block had god boxes too - booster boxes where all the packs had insane collation and were full of extra rares and foils. My shop got a case that had multiple god boxes in it. Later, I somehow got a god box of prophecy too. Literally full of rares and foils. Wish I had kept all the cards and not touched them, but I traded them all away pretty fast. Would do anything to see that box get opened one more time though. Still the most magical moment of my entire hobby life.

Y’know, for nearly twenty years I thought the set symbol was a bracer. I didn’t realize it was a masquerade mask until Guilds of Ravnica was in full swing lol
I know it wasn't masques, but damn if I didn't love fires of yavimaya! definitely gravitated towards being a gruul player so that was definitely a staple of the RG decks I played at the time, no doubt about it. I do remember seeing several of the masques staples seen here though.
Great video! Masques is when I started playing in earnest (picked up a load of Urza's block boosters that were still on sale, but MM was my first set proper) and I *still* miss the plane. Yeah the power level was weird, but the actual world always struck me as fascinating. I know chances of a return to Mercadia are slim, but recent Twitter reading suggests I'm not the only one who misses the place...

A Mercadian Masques 75-card tournament deck was my 1999's christmas present and it is up to now one of my most cherished Christmas memories. In my opinion, Mercadian Masques was a perfect set, lore-wise, art-wise (actual illustrations), people might say it looked too much like a generic fantasy world you could see in a 90's movie, but looking back at it, wasn't that great? I would trade all of the past 20 sets for one set that retried to catch the spirit and substance of Mercadian Masques. I hope I get to live to see Magic return to this more traditional, more quaint, less pop, less pretentious, less garish version of itself, as I knew it on those times.
I honestly didn't realize it's only been three years since you stopped making content for your own health (which I'm very happy to see has improved greatly) and that's because 2020 felt like a decade in and of itself (the grouping of 10 years, not the Kamen rider). Thank you for coming back Wedge, the community hasn't been the same without you. I still reminisce about that bonus unstable preprerelease game where you cast a shahrazad after pulling Maro into your game as a second player.
With all sincerity, I was just wondering to myself about you, how you have been, and how much I missed your content only a week ago. Happy to hear your voice and glad to have you back! Love these look back into Magics history! I started playing during Invasion block so Masques is nostalgic for me. All my foil basics for Legacy are from Masques or IPA. One thing I didn’t see mentioned is this was the first time foil Brainstorm and Dark Ritual were printed! Such a huge commotion in Extended back then. ❤ you Wedge!

Basically the set I startet with (the weatherlight saga is to this day my most beloved magic story arc). I've never unsubscribed during your absence so that I would know the moment you came back. I love your videos and your energy. Good to have you back and hopefully in good health. Don't push yourself and just do what and how much you are comfortable with.
To note: Extended was actually the past eight years of magic. Only in the last years of its existence did they bump it down to 4, thinking it would help set itself apart from the growing Modern scene, shortly before being discontinued entirely.

Oh, the memories! I officially learnt Magic back in Urza's block. But my 1st time playing it with my own cards, was with a Tournament deck of Mercadian Masques. All thanks to the scumbag that stole my backpack, full of 1st edition Pokémon decks and cards... I was so disappointed that I decided to change TCGs
Damn. I l over seeing this set getting some attention. When I started playing magic the gathering, I saw a bunch of these cards in my friends' collections and said I would collect them all just because I had so man and one buddy was collecting mirrodin because it was the set he started with. I actually did it in about 5 years, and to this day, my friends call it Brandon's set because of it. Definitely my favorite

I will say this in respectful disagreement with other commenters: go ahead and push yourself! You're great at this, and that takes effort. Euro wasn't introduced in 99 at least not as cash... I remember like it was yesterday when I had my first Euro coins and bills I went to the LGS and bought Boosters of Invasion and Apocalypse... It was 2002. But yeah basically it existed as a booking currency for banks in 99.
No mention of Gush? A card so impactful to vintage there is an entire book written about how busted it is? Imo, Gush is still the most powerful card in Mercadian Masques. It's even more powerful and relevant since mystic sanctuary got printed.
While Rishadan Port is the headliner, I tend to lean toward Unmask as the most powerful card in Mercadian Masques. The sheer power of rolling Unmask into another discard spell such as Cabal Therapy or Thoughtseize cannot be overstated. You may be down three for two, but you just ensured your opponent isn’t going to get a chance to play Magic without a top deck which would make Gabriel Nassif proud until turn three with a line like that.

Well I'm thrilled to have The Mana Source back. It seems odd to not have a channel update video of some sort. 🤔
As a commander player, I still find overlooked cards from this set from time to time.
Spellshapers are some of my favourite cards, they slide under the radar but the repeatable effects and discard/graveyard synergies are fantastic.
