    A few more branches on the tree:
    -Karn was born not just of oil, but also by his heartstone, coming from Xantcha, who also ultimately stems from Yawgmoth.
    -Karn was built by Urza and Barrin. He effectively had two fathers with an egg(heart) donor.
    -Barrin had a daughter with Rayne. Said daughter, Hanna, was effectively Karn's half-sister.
    -Urza's Bloodline Project may have steered Rayne to Barrin, and even shaped her own lineage; it was never fully confirmed tho it was suspected. Just something to consider.
    -While Harbin may not have been Urza's son (still up in the air), he was still of Urza's heritage given he'd at least be Mishra's son. Harbin is either Karn's half-brother or cousin. By extension, Jarsyl is in the mix, and more pertinently to the present moment, Jodah.
    ...at this point, I'm not sure which has ultimately inflicted the more complicated family history upon themselves involving robots and genocidal maniacs, Urza, or Marvel's Hank Pym.

      Probably not much at all.
      Yawgmoth never actually cared all that much about the religion side of things, he had a god complex but the godhood was mostly so his motives and scientific advancements were able to be progresses that much more efficiently. Yawgmoth was always a man of Science first, which is why he probably would have favored Sheoldred and Jin the most. Though in all likelihood Yawgmoth would have simply......Killed them all to start a new with his image. Because he's just that guy.

    • @davemcduringo4377
      @davemcduringo4377 Před rokem +6

      Look at Yawgmoth's entire history and its really obvious: he would see the value in taking new phyrexia as his own, as it really is his. Elesh Norn would bend the knee fully and serve, or get to hang out with other failures like Mishra or Gix in the rebuilt torture sphere. Yawgy would gain utter control of everything Phyrexian, one way or another, if he was around... or brought back.
      Funny thing about writing ultimate villains: you tend to miss them after they are gone. Phyrexia came back decades later. Bolas came back decades later. What's WotC's recent history been a lot? Bringing back old ideas that they can't top today. This is me calling it: March of the Machines might bring back Yawgmoth. Perhaps in a sort of Phyrexian civil war. One I don't see him losing, either. Unless someone made some very powerful non-Phyrexian friends. Teferi, Elspeth, Tezzeret are all variables in this.

Only way Yawging Moth might be brought back is true some temporal bullshit that Teferi is currently cooking stuck at Zhalfir or possibly true devotion creating him as god on Theros. Also civil war among phyrexians is unlikely considering Norn just utterly demolished both Urabrask and Sheoldred in the all will be one rebellion they tried. If anything compleated planeswalkers kept their soul (because to compleat planeswalkers and keep their spark you have to leave the soul in) so there is possibility of corrupted planeswalkers taking over praetors as leaders of new new phyrexia.

    Ixhel is most likely prone to personal choice due to the lack of blue mana influencing her. Blue is often associated with control. She’s obviously still obedient to the mom and grandma, but she’s more likely to do things of her own volition. She’s doing things to impress them, but she has a creative fluidity they lack. Where she saw her spawn as a “gift I put thought into to impress my mom”- Atraxa (and likely Elesh) can only see and focus on the fact it was made from an individualistic thought process. The creativity without prompting is disturbing to them.
    Heck if Urabrask had participated Atraxa probably would’ve ended up hard to control. Potentially more wild and aggressive. I think the mana that prompts the creativity/free will of this family tree is the green mana. Green is associated with strength AND creation. While the colors that align with full phyrexian loyalty are black and white- the color combos of the two most important figures in Phyrexian genealogy, Yawgmoth and Elesh.

    I'm really glad you touched on the concept of oil lineage since that's a really cool part of Phyrexian lore I wish they elaborated upon more! More thoughts:
    -Oil transmits memory, not just heredity
    -It's possible that the oil Karn dropped came from Xantcha's heartstone, making her the last common ancestor of the New Phyrexians
    -Jin-Gitaxias is also a known Phyrexian parent
    -Germs and newts are created from repurposed flesh too, and grow into core-born Phyrexians
    I'm glad they're finally showing the diversity of Phyrexians as people, too. Ixhel's story I especially loved as an example of a Phyrexian being a person and an exploration of the generational trauma that Norn's tyranny and Atraxa's forced compleation imposes further down the line.

    My fear for the future of the Phyrexia story is that time travel will simply reset all event an dbring back our beloved planes walkers. My Hope is that this growing individualism amongst the phyrexians is a new contagious nature that begins spreading beyond just the red aligned and we end up with a phyrexian civil war. I can imagine that the completion of the palneswalkers isn't as perfect as they think and all of them will rebel with the possible exception of Ajani just to give us an emotional gut punch. Sure they have tamiyo and could maybe release emrakul from the moon over at instead just to reek havoc ( emrakul supposedly let herself be imprisoned tho if I recall so who knows what's up with that.) But the eldrazi are essentially all part of one being who's size can't really be fathomed tht exists in the blind eternities between planes the oil corrupting an eldrazi seems like too little of a dosage no matter how you look at it for something tht large and say it only effected the physical body of a eldrazi piece that's on a plane I feel like it the eldrazi would sever that connection off , who knows tho.
      Personally I'm just hoping the current praetors - Urabrask get killed off (as much as I like them ) and atraxa ends up being the new head honcho of the main bulk of phyrexians whilst Urabrask has his own side gig of em.

Durning the invasion of dominaria, one of yagmoths generals disected a metathran general and stated it closely resembled a phyrexian in many ways. She then wondered if the invadion had not happened, how long it would have taken urza to transform the plane into something that mirrored phirexia. Technically, every first gen phyrexians (the ones we saw as villain 20 years ago back in the Invasion block or perhaps older, and most recently on the Brothers' War expansion) are children of Yawgmoth.
      Therefore, if we are to categorize phyrexian into generations like we did the iPhones, K'rrik is a Gen 1 phyrexian spawned from Yawgmoth. Although vastly different in card power level, K'rrik is technically no different from any common phyrexian cards like Phyrexian Ragers in terms of phyrexian tech generation used in his creation (may be a bit more advanced, but nothing too revolutionary). What K'rrik has different from other phyrexian at that time was probably his ambition and the sheer audacity calling himself the (self-appointed) 'son' of Yawgmoth

    Ya know, I was thinking about it and I remember being a teenager when New Phyrexia came out and being like oh man there's so many story possibilities with them and gotta say I think their current strategy of sprinkling in Preators in other sets should have happened years ago (while keeping the actual big crossover event around now) and been used to build up they are acting in the background while Bolas was the big bad. Or had a core set that was the New Phyrexian civil war and gave us a peek into that madness before they did it. I know they wanted to keep em on the back burner and mysterious but I don't think that was the right call.
    Like 1.) Bolas got like 12 years of build up and NP gets like 3 which I would switch those around in a second if I could. They coulda sprinkled them in and had their plan be mysterious and imply how apocalyptic it could potentially be and had them feel more like characters with agency (as much as a Phyrexian has agency) working towards a goal instead of the designated new big bad. and 2.) I will never understand why we didn't get that New Phyrexian civil war where Elesh Norn became Mother of Machine as a set. Like with some of the weaker over the years I just thought we coulda had that phantasmorgical body horror bonanaza and instead it was mentioned in a couple sentences in a lore article with no details and we found out Norn, Sheoldred, Jin-Gitaxis, and Vorinclex made a bff horrifying angel abomination together which while exactly on brand for them doesn't change the fact that I want that set more than anything. Hindsight is 20/20 though so what can ya do. My first set was Scars of Mirrodin after I read a lot of the novels so I'm pretty invested in these sick surgery addicted freaks and definitely think they deserved more of the spotlight over the years of Bolas going mwahaha just as planned.

      When was Time Spiral block when he came back and ended with him lore wise maniacally laughing and basically being sign posted as the villain? 2006. We had Lorwyn which was the Eldraine come down block of it's day so no Bolas. Then Alara block where he's the villain of the whole set so there's 1 time he was a villain. Then Zendikar where he had Sarkhan Vol release the Eldrazi from the Eye of Ugin so he's indirectly causing the villains of that set. Than Scars of Mirrodin where he sent Tezzeret as a double agent to go work with the Phyrexians and spy on them so there's another part of the story he's directly influencing the story almost like a main villain. Innistrad is next and he's indirectly responsible for Sorin coming back to Innistrad via him failing at stopping the Eldrazi and releasing Avacyn. So Bolas is indirectly responsible for that. Then Return to Ravnica which Bolas had a hand in via Ral Zarek being his toady and trying to become the living guildpact presumably so Bolas didn't have to do all that stuff he did leading up to War of the Spark. Ral Zarak was the main antagonistic force of that block so there's Bolas again. RoR was 2013, WotS was 2019 so we got 6 more years of just expansion sets of lore, which is twice what you claimed. I can go on but you're wrong so wrong like it's kinda funny how wrong you are lol. You can do whatever logical gymnastics you want to justify why what you said is right but Bolas was the main villain for 12 years and that's what I meant so you're wrong.

Then in 2012, we had New Phyrexia, which gave it another year. Bolas being the big bad after that was good to ensure the Phyrexians remained fresh and appealing.

  • @phillipswerdlow1772
    @phillipswerdlow1772 Před 2 měsíci

    Part of Memnarch's history is wrong in this...
    Karn was still a planeswalker when he created mirrodin. He created it as a perfect plane, free from the problems of normal planes. Everything was made of metal and had geometrically and symmetrically perfect patterns. Memnarch was created originally to follow him around when he visited other planes and collect samples of life. Throughout the Mirrodin saga Glissa has dreams of this abduction. But the lifeforms are put onto mirrodin to populate it. The lifeforms adapted and grew with metal in their DNA. They had to survive things like razorgrass and the tangle, to name a couple deadly hazards.
    Karn leaves the planet to Memnarch to watch over it and doesnt come back for a VERY long time, in fact, Karn is considered missing during this time period. Memnarch becomes lonely and starts looking for ways to get off the plane and eventually finds out that with this new plane comes a new spark. So he spends generations searching for it with machines like Myr and (cant remember the name of the bulldozer things), as well as using his influence amongst the populations.
    MEMNARCH HAS NO IDEA WHAT THE OIL IS OR WHAT IT IS DOING UNTIL HE IS ABOUT TO DIE--- i believe its the first chapter of the first book he finds oil and has no clue what it is and shrugs it off.The ending in his lab is where he talks about not paying attention to it. If anything, Geth knows more about the oil than Memnarch ever did.
    When the story comes to an end, Glissa dies while killing Memnarch who is trying to get the spark he thinks she has. But Slobad is the one ends up with the spark. Karn shows up and shows Slobad what the power of a planeswalker is like, and within a short span of time they experience several other planes and he feels the power of being a planeswalker. When they get back Slobad doesnt care because his best friend (glissa) is dead and Karn tells him that he can give up the spark to bring her back to life and he quickly agrees.
    Karn apologizes, feels bad, and takes off. He was a PW the entire time, and he brought the oil to Mirrodin where it slowly grew into the threat it became. The metal nature of mirrodin was perfect for it and made the phyrexians that we're so familiar with today. Before mirrodin, phyrexians were not primarily metal (See early phyrexian cards).
    sorry but Mirrodin was my favorite part of the magic story. Memnarch is truly a fascinating villain, with just about NO CLUE the oil is doing what its doing. He just wanted to get TF off that plane because he was lonely. Literally, because he was going mad from being lonely and injecting himself with serum to try and leave.
