      Necrotic Nick- I figured with the Aperture of Body demo having some of the more atmospheric stuff on it that it would show up on here but I wasn't prepared for the lavish proggy stuff on here. That really caught me off guard but in a really good way. This is going to get a lot of spins when it arrives here for sure.

    I personally love when bands roll the dice and do something out of left field that no one expects from them. Plus I'm a huge fan of Athiest, Cynic, and Death so this is probably going to be my favorite album from them.

    • @thrallsofmetal
      @thrallsofmetal  Před 9 měsíci

      Necrotic Nick- While I do love their older sound this is exceptionally well done. They clearly put a lot into this one and definitely had the chops to pull off a more lavish, technical progressive death metal sound here. I can't say if this is going to be my favorite by them but I can say that so far they have yet to miss the mark with their releases.

  • @MrJoshItIs

    I don't watch/read a ton of reviews, especially from albums or bands I already know, but you guys nailed the highlights. Because I live in Toronto and go to most of the metal shows, I also have bumped into Derrick a couple of times. Once at the Phobophillic show when I went to give props to the band and they were talking with Derrick and again at the Ulcerate show here in the [very small] crowd. I mention this because I mentioned to Derrick that I got into extreme metal from the proggier side so I was already there. He smiled, nodded and seemed to have understood what I meant.
    (of course I have seen them every chance I got live, including the first live show in 4 years post pandemic)

      @thrallsofmetal  Před 9 měsíci +2

      Necrotic Nick- I'd say it's close to the new Horrendous but I'm still giving a slight edge to Horrendous on that one. That album still makes my jaw hit the floor when I jam it. This is excellent though. Hard to say if it'll be my favorite but this band has dripped nothing but killer material and that trend has definitely continued here.

    Tomb Mold was one of the first several bands I checked out when getting into extreme metal. At the time I didn't really like it as I was turned off by the vocals and hadn't gone back since. Over time I have really warmed up to their style of vocals and did check out the demo from last year so when this album was surprised announced I thought I would give it a shot. Holy shit this is amazing! Easily my favorite death metal of the year and the one death metal that truly competes with my favorite black metal of the year.

      Necrotic Nick- I think if they had done another one exactly like their first 3 I still would have liked it but this one makes a statement and drastically expands their sound overall. I had this preordered when it was announced since I had a hunch I would like it. I definitely here Cynic in the jazz fusion moments and I guess I can here some Van Halen in the lead work. I'll have to look into the other bands that influenced this one.

  • @DoomAxe48

    I agree with Miller on this album. I think the progressive tendencies worked well on Planetary Clairvoyance, but they went a little too far into '70s progressive rock for my taste on this one. Also released on Friday was Blood Oath - Lost in an Eternal Silence. It's the Chilean band's debut album. They have some killer bass playing and sound similar to Atheist, StarGazer, and Testimony of the Ancients era Pestilence. I'm actually enjoying it more than the new Tomb Mold. Would be cool to see a review if you guys have the chance.

    • @thrallsofmetal
      @thrallsofmetal  Před 9 měsíci +1

      Necrotic Nick- For me, I really didn't think Planetary Clairvoyance was that proggy. It definitely had more spacey atmosphere on it but musically it still had a fierce OSDM vibe to it. This is definitely more progressive across the board from the atmosphere, to the riffs and even the drumming. I don't know if we'll time to cover Blood Oath but if I spot while I'm shopping I may snag it just based on your description since those are all bands I like.

    What you're about to read is my personal opinion but this is the year of the worship bands, isn't it?.
    As much as i found Glacial Damnation to be a bit lukewarm compared to Crypt Of Ice, it was still better than what Memoriam (the continuation of Bolt Thrower, sort of) put out.
    Lamp Of Murmuur did Immortal better than the actual Immortal.
    And this new Tomb Mold album is a crash course of how to make Atmospheric Death Metal. The new Incantation album was good (They can stick to their formula for the rest of their career for all i care) Bit it wouldn't be the first time they're getting outdone by one of their students, Tomb Mold in this case.
    Anyways, fantastic release. Probably my second favorite from Them just behind Manor Of Infinite Forms.

    • @thrallsofmetal
      @thrallsofmetal  Před 9 měsíci +1

      Necrotic Nick- Honestly, I think any given year has some worship and tribute style bands but I see what you're saying here. I do like Glacial Domination but I honestly prefer the new Memoriam to it by a bit. I think they still do that sound well. I still need to check out that new Lamp of Murmuur because I wasn't all that impressed with the new Immortal. As for Tomb Mold and Incantation, I'd say this is the first time where the 2 aren't that comparable anymore. I think this album is more worship and tribute of later Death, Cynic and Atheist mixed with a bit of their old sound so they've kinda moved into a new bracket in my opinion. Regardless though they did it really well. This is one hell of an album.

      Necrotic Nick- Hey, plug away. I have no issues with it. This was a big gamble for them but I think it'll pay off in the long wrong. While I love their first 3 this one opens a lot of other possibilities in terms of where they can go musically and this keeps them from being pigeonholed too. They can always return to their older style in the future but for now I kinda want to see where all this goes.

So many bands think they have found their niche and go the seemingly easy route by becoming people pleasers and changing as little as possible every album. I hate to say it but I was really bored by this. It’s great for a band to step out of its usual sound, but I just don’t like this sound. I really enjoyed all the Dream Unending type parts, but the angular death prog stuff did nothing for me. I am glad that the drum production is reigned in instead of being cavernous again. Necrotic Nick- To each their own. I figured this album would be divisive with the fans since it's such a big shift in their sound but I think they executed it really well here.

    It's a solid record, but it's too proggy for me

      Necrotic Nick- I get it. It's a big shift in their sound and I definitely thought this one could be divisive.

    I like the music but I find the vocals really ‘meat and potatoes’ and kind of boring. 3.5 out of 5 for me

      Necrotic Nick- Vocally I didn't expect them to change and honestly I prefer the cavernous growls on this since it's still something that's a part of their old sound as well.

      @@thrallsofmetal I think I would have been ok with the cavernous vocal if there were clean vocals as well, especially in the more melodic moments.

    I don't like it another band changing their sound for the worse their older albums are so much better old school death metal I don't know why bands do this disappointing to say the least.

      Necrotic Nick- To each their own on that one. I think they knew this would be a divisive album but I like the shift and they executed the sound well. Sure, another album that sounded like the last 2 would have been cool but this one really stands out and really shows how talented they are as musicians.

      Necrotic Nick- I love that I got to jam this beast but I hate that I have to wait till next month to get my copy of it. Still, I'm happy they're back.
