- Cruelle mère des amours
from the opera Hippolyte et Aricie by Jean-Philippe Rameau (1683-1764)
Lorraine Hunt Lieberson, Phèdre
Les Arts Florissants under William Christie
The opera was premiered by the Académie Royale de Musique at its theatre in the Palais-Royal in Paris on October 1, 1733. The French libretto, by Abbé Simon-Joseph Pellegrin, is based on Racine's tragedy Phèdre.
Cruelle mère des amours,
Ta vengeance a perdu ma trop coupable race;
N'en suspendras-tu point le cours?
Ah ! du moins, à tes yeux, que Phèdre trouve grâce.
Je ne te reproche plus rien,
Si tu rends à mes vœux Hippolyte sensible.
Mes feux me font horreur; mais mon crime est le tien;
Tu dois cesser d'être inflexible.
Cruel mother of loves,
your vengeance has brought low my most guilty race.
Will you not check its course?
Ah! At least let Phaedra find grace in your eyes!
I will reproach you no more
if you make Hippolytus susceptible to my desires.
My ardour horrifies me, but my crime is yours.
You should cease to be inflexible.

Mine too !
This music anticipates the Romanticism, it's a less decorated style, but with more pathos and more wideness of sounds. It's even more beautiful at the second listening.
Phenomenal skill. Still just astounding how she understood the entire culture.

Today I discovered this singer Lorraine Hunt Lieberson, what a beautiful voice, I love it, a very good baroque singer, she died at a young age, what a pitty.
What a discovery! I’m a huge fan of her singing, and she is well represented on my channel. She left us far too soon, but fortunately she appears on many recordings.
Merci ! Musique intemporelle !
Beautiful illustrations, as always !

Grand Baroque music. Rameau to me what differentiates him is the use of flutes and piccolo's. There is something very unique about his sound and I love it. I wish they would do these operas but at least in Seattle, they are more intent on DEI so thus we get a malcom X opera, none of the classics because they are too old. I saw Alcina this last year and it was the first time ever it was performed in Seattle, and of course had to be done with modern costumes. This year nothing baroque at all.
Sadly, Baroque opera doesn’t seem to be performed much in the states. I find it interesting that Handel, when performed, is often done in modern dress/staging, and yet French Baroque operas are more commonly presented with hyper-stylized Baroque costumes. Also, I find that the staging (particularly the director’s concept) is more important than the music itself. I think we underestimate audiences. If presented with good performances of this music, many would find it very enjoyable.
I just saw Bach St John's passion at the Seattle Symphony tonight and it was great. A full house. A rarely played thing. People loved it.
Yes at that opera Alcina I went to the after the opera lecture and they talked about how important the new staging was. I mean it wasn't bad but they had a woman in a glittery dress and a guy in jeans. We do underestimate audiences. I emailed the Seattle radio station KING FM which you can stream world wide and asked them why don't you play any opera? The head of the station replied that their research showed that people don't like it so they have to go with that research. (In order to get donors) Almost no vocals at all But now they have something called the Christmas channel which plays great music from baroque, renaissance and medieval music. They will not only play a classic one but 7 different versions of that classic one. Such as the apple tree carol, or the huron carol, just thousands of them, from all over the countries. At first it was just around Christmas time but I emailed them again and they said the will now have it year round. King.org check it out @@JeffreyStivers
Such a sublime performance, full of restrained grief and musicality! Thank you Jeffrey.
Since you said you're not particularly familiar with Rameau, I'll take the liberty to leave you two suggestions, Mireille Delunsch with Les Musiciens du Louvre in La Folie from Platée czcams.com/video/cpwYjawWCZE/video.html and Forêts paisibles czcams.com/video/b07W6D02v00/video.html with Magali Léger and Laurent Naouri, again with Mark Minkowski and his musicians. A thank you for all the great artists you introduced me to!
You’re welcome, and thank you for the suggestions. I was familiar with Forêts paisibles but had not seen that performance. I’m very fond of Laurent Naouri and have a video on my channel with him singing the wickedly difficult Fra l’ombre e gl’orrori from Handel’s Aci, Galatea e Polifemo. I did not know Magali Léger. The real discovery for me was Mireille Delunsch. I was not familiar with her or that excerpt from Platée. Superb! It’s always nice to discover “new” music and artists. Thanks again for your recommendations.
@@JeffreyStivers Like I said, have been enjoying yours for some time. Will be checking out Naouri and his Händel. There's a version of La Folie by Sabine Devielle, too.
Ces images sont ridicules.
c est archi-nul ; la 1 chose qu on doit entendre c est le texte ; et la des les debut on ne comprends rien.
