    The Ford Raptor R features a 5.2L supercharged V8 producing 700 horsepower and 640 lb-ft of torque. The engine is derived from the Shelby GT500's 5.2L engine, which is based on the same overall architecture as the GT350's 5.2L engine, though the similarities are quite subtle.
    This video serves as a deep dive on the new 5.2L engine; from the intake, to the supercharger, to the cylinders and block, to the exhaust, and the strategies used throughout. Does the Raptor R have what it takes to reclaim top dog against the Ram TRX? Enjoy the video!

    **UPDATE - WRONG INFO** Clarification as there is some bad information at 5:13 (as pointed out by Cory Engel in the comments). The bypass valve operations is as follows, as per Ford:
    1. When the engine is at WOT, the bypass is fully closed, and everything goes through the rotors, charge air cooler and into the cylinders.
    2. When the bypass is fully open, say at idle, when no boost is required, then the majority of the air goes through the bypass circuit. The engine air flow demand is not very high, and it takes the path of least resistance. It still goes through the CAC.
    3. At part throttle, part loads, the air can recirculate in the unit.
    Regarding 3 above, this means at part throttle (highway operation, etc), the airflow still goes thru the rotors, but the excess pressure actually is bled through the pass and recirculates (unlike what I state in the video, that airflow skips the rotors - it does not!).

      That's a new design of the first clutch pulleys first used on alternators, Ford started using a clutch pulley to prevent over-revving the alternator in the early 2000's, going past ~18,000RPM causes centrifugal force damage to the internal rotor windings (and small 8mm rear bearings). 4.6L DOHC engines in the SVT Mustang Cobra, Mach 1 Mustang, and Bullitt Mustangs were all at risk of over-revving the alternator. The Crown Victoria Police Interceptor also got the clutch pulley because it had a larger special (expensive) Mitsubishi 240amp alternator, and concerned Law Enforcement would drive it too aggressively with the larger internal rotor to produce that amount of current for all their electrical devices, was at risk of over-revving (was also available on dual battery Super Duty's, but no risk of going past ~18,000RPM).

      A nuclear diamond battery is made from radioactive waste from nuclear power plants. They process it so that it can be put through the same process they use to make artificial diamonds. When layered with a semiconductor material the radioactive decay of the radioactive waste causes and small electrical current to be created.
      You would have to have a lot of those batteries in series to create the voltage that an electric vehicle would need to operate and a lot of those in parallel to create the current that an electric vehicle would need to operate. And yes, they could last a very long time without needing to be charged.
      The key point to take away from this is that a nuclear diamond battery is made from radioactive waste from nuclear power plants. That means you would need heavy shielding to protect people from the radioactivity and if the vehicle was in an accident that ruptured the battery pack you would have radioactive waste contaminating the area and all of the people involved in the accident and cleanup contaminated with radioactive waste.
      And if the nuclear diamond battery is not used until the waste has completely decayed and is no longer radioactive, meaning it would have to be transferred into a new vehicle each time the old vehicle wore out and could not be used any more, the battery would still have to be treated as radioactive waste and stored accordingly.

Electrical cords would be eliminated on many devices. Homes and buildings could be disconnected from outside energy sources.

      Always remember that the devil is in the details. And there is never a free lunch, it may not cost you anything but someone has to pay for it. And if someone else pays for it there are usually strings attached they do not tell you about until it is too late.
      By the way, nuclear submarines and aircraft carriers have to be refueled about every ten years. Nuclear reactors work by causing the very rapid decay of radioactive material. That causes lots of heat which is absorbed by either a molten salt or sodium compound that is circulated through pipes in the reactor that also pass through a water vessel filled with demineralized and treated water and super-heats the water. That super-heated water is released into a turbine and flashes into steam causing the turbine to spin which then turns the generator that creates the electricity necessary to power the ship. The steam is then piped through large pipes cooled with sea water so it condenses and then is pumped back into the water vessel to be super-heated again.
      When the radioactive material in the reactor is mostly depleted they shut it down and when it cools off enough they will remove the tubes that held the radioactive material and the dampening rods and replace them. Once that is done they can attached the mini version of the super collider and restart the fission reaction in the reactor and it will be ready to use for another ten years.
      The waste from nuclear reactors consist of most depleted radioactive elements. That means it is mostly depleted of the very thing that causes energy to be created. And that is what they want to use to make nuclear diamond batteries.

    Excellent video! One quick correction: at 5:13 you state the bypass valve allows the intake air to bypass the rotor group and flow directly to the cylinders. This is incorrect; due to a Roots SC being a positive displacement pump, air is always pulled through the rotors. At low loads however, the bypass valve opens to allow any excess air that would otherwise be compressed to flow back to the intake upstream of the rotor group, thus preventing any boost/positive pressure from being generated. (This is the SC equivalent to a turbo’s recirculating valve/blow off valve)

    • @EngineeringExplained
      @EngineeringExplained  Před 2 lety +37

      Hmm - I'd imagine air's taking the easiest path; if the rotors are creating suction strong enough, perhaps that's correct - initially I'd assume the easiest path is just direct to the engine, rather than through the rotors. But as you point out, the rotors are always spinning. Will follow up with Ford for clarification!
      Edit: Cory thanks for pointing this out! I've pinned a comment to the video with correct information! Only at very low loads (like idle) would airflow be flowing directly through the bypass (rather than recirculated, like at partial loads).

    • @chitlitlah
      @chitlitlah Před 2 lety +4

      I had a Thunderbird SC with a similar design despite being made in 1989. Yeah, the bypass was for reducing the load on the engine when it doesn't need the power. The blower will force enough air into the engine even at idle but it also uses engine power to do it costing extra fuel. It also wears out the rotating components more compared to if it's just free-spinning. The bypass takes away most of the disadvantages of a blown engine when you don't need the extra power.
      Edit: Now that I reread it, I have to agree with what was said in the video. It does allow air to bypass the rotors and it's largely to increase economy. It's not going to produce boost if the throttle plate is choking off the air sufficiently. It's probably easier to control idle air when the blower isn't engaged though.

    The bypass valve is more of a return for excess air to come back out of post rotor pack section. It let's air come away from the intake valves, not towards them. Eaton, and all roots blowers, are positive displacement. They will always pump 2.65 liters of air per revolution. You don't need that much at idle or cruise, even at the lower density from vacuum, so the bypass valve lets you recirculate the same air, rather than pulling more air by the throttle body.

      Dude the whole point of the Raptor is to be able to drive to the store once day, hit the trails that night and then drive to work the next day like nothing ever happened. If you don't hit anything you'd never know the thing went off road

    Tell people they can’t have something (V8s) and that they won’t be available in the future. Then make only a few today and sell them at a huge profit today.

    Hello. I have an old Saab 9-3 and I've only ever run it on premium fuel. However now with gas prices being the way they are I want to run it on regular octane gas. The manufacturer suggests that it's okay to run on 87 octane fuel as well but the car has now done over 300,000kms. Would it be a bad idea to switch to low octane now as could it cause engine damage ?
