      Owen, I make your words mine. It is exactly how I felt. Depression is a really hard place I make it really hard to feel appreciated our simply happy. I've managed to overcome it a couple years ago and now, like Freddie, I am having the time of my life. So bike, yes, a lot, know you're loved and you matter. You will make it to the other side and you will be able, like Freddie, to share your story and help the next person. Take care and lots of love to you.

    Well I’ve been a GCN fan since long.. but this is one of the best videos I’ve seen in a long time. I know a lot of folks have got on to bikes just to beat issues like anxiety and depression. I can relate to Freddie so much with myself having struggled at such events and falling into a dark place mentally myself, so I can totally relate to what Freddie is feeling.
    My riding has changed a lot ( I think I’m faster, thinking of Greg lemond’s quote here :) ) but at a mass event I try to support and ride with guys at the back especially those who’re struggling. It’s a great thing to help them cause they’re suffering the most. Every climb, every pothole can be just a miserable experience. Helping them ride as much as possible feels like a great experience.
    Anyway Kudos to @Ollie and @GCN

  • @maxlandy7642
    @maxlandy7642 Před 2 lety +118

    Only people who have suffered depression and anxiety will have a true understanding of what a lonely and isolated place it can be and how even the smallest of issues can be magnified. Whenever I see someone who people look up to like Freddie be open and honest about their own struggles, I always have such respect for them. To show others it's OK to struggle and that things will get better will bring hope to so many. As Freddie says, be honest about it,, there is no shame in mental ill health, and if there is one thing I have learned it's that when you are open about it yourself, you will realise how many people close to you are suffering in silence. For that reason if I ever see the signs of anxiety or depression I always reach out and if nothing else just make people know that I am there and that when there is nothing else there is always hope. Nice work guys and a great video.

    Freddy, I am writing this in tears. This 21:27 video had to be replayed. You said at the 15:10 mark “it’s not that I didn’t want to live anymore, it’s that I didn’t want to be in pain anymore”. 8 years ago my wife of 30 years ended our marriage. I was not expecting it and for the last eight years I have been living in pain too. I walked away from everything, I never thought of ending my life but wished I just wasn’t anymore. Thank you, thank you, I am choosing to not live in pain but live happily and abundantly. Timing is everything, and this week I saw a post that said “We’re ALL a little broken, but last time I checked broken crayons still color - Trent Shelton” since then I put a small broken crayon in my pocket so wherever I go it’s to remind myself of that quote. I am saving this CZcams video so that I can play it when life and its challenges gets me down. Bravo, and kudos to you from one healing human to another.

Everything about this film is relatable, from our self doubt to the importance of cycling buddies, from the elation of achieving goals to the days when we just can't do it no matter how hard we try. And most of all, the benefits to our mental heath of good food and cycling! When I lost my father a few years ago, it was cycling that kept me from the darkest places. Obviously, cycling pros and experts provide a huge value for GCN, but most people watching are the Freddie's of the world, especially the 'Freddie from a few years ago.' Good on you for the way you listened to Ollie who by the way delivered a masterclass in distance riding, staying out of your head and pace, pace, pace! Brilliant video! Great video. I can relate to Freddie. I went into depression when my father died, when I was 19 yrs. old. After a month of only to eat and go to the bathroom. I didn't leave my bed. But, I decided that I can't go on like this, I have to start living again. Nothing makes you feel more alive than cycling! Beautiful scenery, fresh air and the feeling of, that your not alone. Amazing!

    One of the best videos by GCN. Brilliant work by Freddie and a role model for so many struggling with their mental health. A big shout also to Ollie for his encouragement and pacing skills. No ego just a real helping hand. Many club riders could take a lead from Ollie by encouraging not embarrassing the slower rider.

    So first of all thanks for my seconds of fame. I am the guy in the bright yellow top at the first feed station. I was telling all my mates I'd passed you before the first feed station only to face some entirely preventable issues later in the ride that meant 225 was my only option and for you guys to sail past me on a far more sensible pacing and pre-ride training strategy. It was much harder cut offs than when I did the whole 312 in 2018 with 10 minutes to spare. Presumably because of the shorter days .It's a great ride. I was helped round by some random I met on the ride and we ended up finishing together.
    I'm all singed up and back again for 2021.
    Chapeau to Freddie for finishing. A huge achievement and a well deserved little cry. A place I have definitely been to at the end of a couple of big long rides. A brutally honest story and a surprisingly simple but not quick fix. Well done for persevering.

    Freddie and Ollie. What an inspiration and also brutal honesty from Freddie. Mental health and fitness is often so understated. I am an 6 times ironman finisher and national time trialist competitor. Stopped doing these for lots of reasons (work and family) and then my wheels started to fall off (literally) Took me a while to realise (yep a divorce and more shit than I can think of). All came crashing down when trying to go to work one day and I crashed mentally. Literally. A call to 111 and was admitted to a mental health emergency care team. Then covid happened and was re-introduced to cycling after a decade (thank you!) The release and balance I found again can’t be underestimated. I saw that in Freddie. Seriously cried mate. Hearts out to you. Massive effort. GCN - please focus on this more. Mental health is massive and cycling is a huge positive. Freddie and Ollie - bloody amazing. Thank you

    Freddie, awesome effort. I did the 167 this year, six month after major surgery. I did the ride with a pal who is a great cyclist, so I did the ride on my own but found it reminded me that even when we feel vulnerable and lonely we can always push ourselves to achieve more. Thank you so much for sharing your story! When I was about 14 years old I had a really tough time because so many things summed up and it felt like my whole world was falling apart and I just couldn't bear it anymore. I was really lucky that I had my sport, it was the only thing I could hold on to for a couple of years. Thanks to several years of mobbing / being excluded at school, I had absolutely no selfconfidence at all. Rowing built me up again and made me realize that I can acheive anything I set my mind on to, no matter what others might say. I know I'm strong and no one can take that ever away from me. I feel like sports gets so underrated when it comes to mental health and that's one of the reasons why I think it should be so much more encouraged in school etc.. Rowing, and since a few years cycling as well, is still the key to my mental wellbeing. It makes me so confident and helps me to get trough tough days when I feel like it all comes back again.
    For me it will allways be up to sports to hold me togehter. And cycling does really, really well, I am so glad I started (even though it's damn expensive for a student) :D
    There are probably many, many other stories like this or Freddies out there and I think they deserve to get heard. This video reminds me that I am not alone, and that we all can do great things if we just try and work (or sometimes fight) for it. So thank you very much for sharing and being so honest, Freddie, I think that's really brave and maybe even stronger than doing the 312 itself. Congrats for finishing!

    I have to say that I have been waiting and waiting for this video in particular for quite some time now. It was initially just to see Freddie's journey as it resonated so much with me. However in all your editorial efforts to date, you did something quite sincere with this. You told a real story about a real person who should hold the title as GCN Peoples Cyclist. What made this even more empowering was you surrounded that person with success and pushed them to achieve a version they could achieve. Props to Oli for being the best domestique in GCN history. It's a tough role and you did astoundingly well. Congrats to Freddie as I was, and am right there with you. Legitimately. You're an inspiration in many ways as a cyclist but also as a human making it ok to admit to hard times and mental health. To speak to the value of recognition and the practice of self healing and love. There was a time that GCN was all about hacks and bodges and cycling gossip. This episode cements GCN into being cycling for everyone.
