Never use wood chips in the garden. Not only does it ruin your soil but it encourages weed growth. Bad weeds like thistle and other deep rooted weeds.

Absolutely, wood chips can tie up the nitrogen in the soil while they break down. We only use wood chips in the walkway. I have rows of compost and amended soil we plant in. The wood chips are 6-8" deep, we have very few if any weeds in our walkway.
