My goal is to commute for cheap. I hate spending $ on fuel for the truck unless I'm hauling something or it's winter. If I had started riding motorcycles 20 years ago with the rest of my friends, then I probably would have eventually graduated to something like an R1 within a couple of years and spent some time on the track. But I'm getting to old to push my luck, things take longer to heal. 30-50 hp is plenty of power for me, and more than enough to break a few laws (or bones) on the road - not that I would, but responsible riding doesn't require any more power than what a 300-400cc machine would provide.

I agree completely that most mortals don't need a liter bike. A 600 supersport has far more ability than most riders can ever hope to use. The one complaint I have about 600s is that you shift a lot more. It's more important to be in the right gear all the time. "Rowing through the gearbox" comes to mind. You can also learn A LOT about riding by just sliding around a 100cc dirt bike. Also, be sure to turn off the front wheel ABS on the R1 at the track. You do NOT want that kicking in as you're braking hard going into a corner.

  • @_Jaded_

I ride a V4S in street mode at the reduced power level (power delivery is customizable within in all three modes race, sport, and street). Throttle response is also adjustable in all three modes, riding with progressive now [vs performance). Max power is around 120hp ish in reduced power/street mode vs the 214 the bike is capable of with power maxed out.. I absolutely adore the flexibility the V4S represents. I can adjust the bike to be enjoyable on the street and the track with the push of a button and know that I am not wasting any potential. Instead I am using the bike to the extent of its features. Having said all that it requires a lot of maturity to refrain from just maxing power in all settings and looping the bike into a tree or guard rail.... new riders not a good fit with this much power. Cheers

    • @_Jaded_
      @_Jaded_ Před 4 lety

@@Fee.1 Ducati makes the Panigale "V4S". Honestly there are less expensive more reliable options with same or similar features.. I like the V4S because it fits me, but admit that the expense was hard to justify when compared to similar offerings from other manufacturers. Best advice if you are looking for it... ignore the hype around HP and TQ, and be honest about your riding intentions. HP is a marketing tactic, and is almost irrelevant with modern electronics. I love the Yammie Noob view point on speed and HP and agree with him that HP is way over hyped for street and even track which is why I highlighted the fact that my bike can be dialed back to suit my needs even if it means giving up 40 percent of its available hp. The V4S has WAY more to offer than just ballistic speed. Focus on what fits you, talks to your soul, and keeps the shiny side up... that said if there was an equivalent sub 800cc class bike, I would own it.

  • @BTrain-is8ch

Track bike selection comes down to budget. Seat time is the number one factor for progress with coaching being a close second. You have to pick something where the running costs aren't going to impact your ability to get seat time and help. For most people that's going to mean something small. The learning "advantage" is vastly overblown when people talk about smaller bikes. Money is the real issue.

Regarding insurance, it is amazing how "cheap" insurance can be for a liter bike nowadays. In my case, I got my M2 endorsement in August 2019 at the age of 34. I bought a 2019 Yamaha R3 as my first bike. For insurance, I ended up with Progressive paying $1,620 for one year of insurance (Geico had quoted me $1,950). Two weeks ago, I traded the R3 for a 2020 BMW S1000RR. For insurance, I ended up with Geico paying $1,690 for one year of insurance (Progressive had quoted $1,530 just to complete the year I had started on the R3). It will really depend on the company as to the actual cost of insurance.

Should probably spend more time with the bike before answering questions about it.
There is nothing miserable about riding an R1 around town or whatever. And most of us flash the ECU. Take what you hear about this bike from a NON owner with a grain of salt. And yes it has wheelie control it’s called LIF. I did a whole video on Yamaha Ride Control if anyone is interested.
When the Yamaha electronics intervene there’s a light on the dash that flash but it isn’t noticeable. And you don’t have to be going that fast either for them to activate. Depends on the mode and your personal setting.
Also the stock brakes suck ass. Spend more time pushing the bike and then you’ll see why a lot of owners upgrade the master cylinder and pads.
A mode is perfectly smooth if your right wrist is smooth.

@@Fee.1 I'd say start on a 300-400cc. Has sufficient go for average traffic but not too over powered to overwhelm a beginner. Depends on your preference as well. Do you like sports style or cruiser bikes?

When he says you can't do anything, he's taking about himself. You can do soooooo much with an r1. This guy probably can't even wheelie bro.

You know what? I hate supersports handlebars as do many others and there is data saying its actually worse in very twisty roads. And there are really fast sporty nakedbikes now, street triple r, apprillia tuono, superduke etc.

My first bike was an unrestricted 2000 ZX-12 Ninja & within two weeks i'd been 180 mph! I'd definitely recommend everyone do the same! My odds of survival increased greatly by the day! Im now 51 and ride daily like a bat out of hell!😁

No honestly, get a smaller bike. If you've got like 0 skill with bikes get a Honda CB500F, probably the easiest and most forgiving beginner bike I've ever ridden. Great torque and good power (but not too much and it won't do anything crazy).
If you've got average skill go and take what you want as long as it's not a 4 cylinder or a machine that makes over a 100HP. I think that it's just too much power to properly handle for a beginner.
I recommend a KTM RC 390 (my current bike) it's the most aggressive A2 (europe) supersport bike that you can get and it is still relatively comfortable (with a KTM powerparts gel seat).
It also has good torque and is pretty fun to ride, but it is harder than the honda
