  • Very quick, simple video to help you on your way to program your own patterns in the Behringer TD-3. Not intended to cover all programming functions, but just the main elements to get you started.

    Finally! Someone who's prepared to say the sequencer isn't complicated and Difficult to grasp, Ive eve seen several video's listing the sequencer as a con. One even labeled it a dealbreaker! It blows my mind so many people just don't grasp that it's not just the unique saw/square wave analog filtere/envelope signal path circuitry that makes the 303 such an iconic machine, its just as much about the sequencer. Which is why there's have never been a truly faithful knock off until the last few years with a few higher end machines and now theres TD3 made by manufactures who understand the importance of the original sequencer's contribution to the iconic 303 baseline sound. And, yes, upon its launch, its sequencer got its rep for difficulty and frustratingly confusing two stage process, FOR MAKING BASS ACCOMPANIMENT GOR GUITAR. However, for creating iconic signature Acid house patterns, close yr eyes and tapa tapa tapa. It doesn't mater, the more random, the more interesting it can be. A day of tapping and playing about, you get used to where you need to put things for the more classic structured patterns. Ive wanted a genuine 303 for 25 years. Ive got a bunch of mono synths, a monologue, and used Live for over a decade, and ive never nailed a great acid line. Close, but no Ceephax, Vibert, Afx standard. And I knew it was pointless trying. IMy second td3 arrived today, first one yesterday. An hour after opening the first, I was jamming out to the best acid patterns id ever sequenced. Tappa, Tappa, Tappa...

    • @iixorb
      @iixorb  Před 3 lety +4

      Absolutely ! In fact, the sequencing method significantly contributes to the magic - and it's essential that clones include all the idiosyncrasies of the original. I've heard of people wanting to get the '303' experience by having their DAW (or whatever) feed MIDI notes into their TD-3 and then wonder why it doesn't sound like a 303. Forget it! Use the built-in sequencer and don't worry too much about understanding what it's trying to.... just go with the flow and let it do its thing !!! Granted, if you're trying to program a riff from a song you've heard, it can be a bit of a hassle (I've had experience since 1991 and I still can't get this right!). But for creating your own unique basslines, just go for it - like I did in this video - put in a bunch of random stuff and enjoy the result :-)

      Thanks 👍. Indeed, I think if the 303 / TD3 ‘sequenced’ in the same way that a DAW or hardware sequencer does, the results would often be a bit lame! The ‘magic’ comes from the weird, unpredictable ‘throw a bunch of stuff in’ method and see what comes out!

I was able to get some random stuff going on right out of the box that was pretty fun. The sequencer really makes this instrument what it is and I'm finally able to afford one that isn't $2,000! You can also use the sequencer to control a Korg NTS-1, which I will also be doing.

      ok, that's strange. I wonder if they have changed the o/s since my one was produced? I think mine was from one of the first batches. FYI - the programming method I have shown here works exactly the same on my Roland TB-303. You could also try a better pattern clearing method than I showed here. With the unit stopped, press Clear and the relevant pattern button at the same time. This I believe clears the pattern properly and sets the timing to 16 steps etc (my method shown does clear the notes etc but leaves the timing to whatever was set for the pattern you're overwriting).

      I'm not sure if the TD-3 can actually record a 'string' of MIDI notes from an external source, as it's not like a traditional MIDI sequencer; maybe someone else can comment? Bear in mind though, the 'magic' of the TB-303 (therefore the TD-3 too) comes from what you randomly key into its internal sequencer - and then apply slides, accents and transpositions - just as I attempted to show in this video... The quirkiness of the internal sequencer has just as much of an influence on that '303 sound we all love, as the VCO, Res and Cutoff do... maybe more so, actually. Good luck !

      I’m not sure about courses but I’d recommended joining the “gearspace.com” forum - where you’ll be able to get answers to questions when you’re first starting out. Regarding the Behringer TD3; it’s generally designed to be stand-alone, so you can enjoy it on its own. But if you’re wanting to experience a little more ‘acid’ and ‘techno’ then I’d recommend buying a Behringer RD9 or RD6 drum machine, and connect it to your TD3 via MIDI and have them playing in sync together. Before long, you’ll want to get an RD8, a mixer to join the audio together and then maybe a synth!
      As as say, you’d do well to join gearspace.com. Like with every forum, there will be impolite responses but most people there are genuinely helpful. And it’s free :-)

      Hi - there is but I haven’t figured out how to do that yet ( I never figured it out on my 303 either). Maybe someone has done a more advanced version indicating this ? I might redo this ‘tutorial’ properly soon ( showing the correct method to clear a pattern and not my ‘not quite’ correct method - although it works :-)

      @@iixorb telling you guys how to do it cause it took me literally months to figure it out! and theres alot of 303 snobs out there so heres how..
      first hold function press the step button (4 times) you'll get no visual feedback
      second: click the time mode button then hit step 4 times
      third: press play you'll notice the sequence is only 4 steps
      next time hit as many steps as you want but both have to be the same amount

      Most keyboard players like myself would love an option where you can play the melody and rhythm in in one shot. It has a little mini keyboard, so why not?

      this is far simpler than programming a pattern step by step. Once you do this a few times it becomes easier and easier.

    I want to be able to play the TD-3 like a regular sound module so I can sequence it through cubase. Does any one know if you can and if so how many octaves does it have? I have also been searching for a Midi Controller chart so i can control the knobs via cubase automation. Does anyone one know if this possible and were i can find a chart?

    • @leftmono1016
      @leftmono1016 Před 4 lety +1

      Synthesis - to be honest half of the classic 303 sound is due to the sequencer, you'd be far better sending midi clock from Cubase to play patterns in time. But you will be able to send midi notes from Cubase to the TD3, it's just nowhere near as fun as the TD sequencer. Not sure how many octaves it'll respond to.
      You won't find a CC chart for the TD3 as the knobs won't respond- they're not digital on this. Same thing on my TT303 and MB33. Seems like it would be a limitation but it's not - these are so much fun to tweak live.

    • @alexiscabreramusic
      @alexiscabreramusic Před 4 lety

      Left Mono I think the same way BUT, this sequencer lacks of shuffle right? In that case I’d record the sequence from the TD3 to a midi track and then apply shuffle to that midi track to send it back to the TD3.

    • @leftmono1016
      @leftmono1016 Před 4 lety

      Alexis Cabrera - that would be an excellent workaround. I quite like recording TT303 midi out into my Digitakt and then sending it to other synths. Not tried shuffle though...

    • @jdrukman
      @jdrukman Před 4 lety +1

      You can't automate the knobs. You can send midi notes to it but that's it.
