I'm so thankful that you videoed this to share. Mly ground compacts around the tubers like cement and I can't get them out of the ground. I tried totes but that restricts the growth so much. I've never been so excited to pile up leaves and grass clippings! Gona plant me sum sweet taters in 2023!
Add you a few shovels of garden soil and a little organic fertilizer in each layer , water it in well and give it time to break down so it won't be so hot and you will be surprised , and if your potato slips start looking like they aren't gonna make ( like mine did ) just leave them they should acclimate to the pile and do just fine good luck 👍
That’s a very nice harvest of sweet potatoes. Thank you for sharing
Thanks for watching 👍
Those are really nice looking. And their mostly a consistent size. I'm getting some really good ideas for growing things from these videos. Have a nice day and thanks for the video.
Thank you for your comment and thanks for watching 👍
A good harvest there. Love watching your video
Thank you I appreciate you watching friend 👍
Wow! You made out good. I made two new raised garden beds this spring. I filled them with fall leaves from last year and only few inches of dirt ontop. One bed I planted sweet potatoes but waiting for the first frost before I dig them up. We had a mild drought this year where I'm at in N.Y so I don't know how they did yet. Stands to reason with no restrictions like you said bigger potatoes.
We do better every year in the compost pile then in the ground thanks for watching 👍
Great job and idea that I will follow in Georgia

Wow like your harvest of sweet potatoes, very simple garden matters I really like that thank you for ideas
Your welcome thanks for watching 👍
Great video! I have some potatoes growing in my own compost pile but it was full of big branches - excited to dig them up and see if anything significant grew. Your sweet potatoes are huge! I don't think I have a long enough growing season to grow them here in alaska
I'm sure your sweet potatoes will do just fine in your compost pile , we are in zone 5 here not sure about your zone but I think you get more sun for a longer day period in Alaska , it would be interesting to see your results being so far north 👍
Good idea...in compost pile...how long have they been in?
We planted our sweet potato slips may 16 and just harvested around 5 months in compost pile thanks for watching 👍
Fantastic harvest. Awesome size. Good job.

Thanks for watching 👍
Great idea! What usda planting zone are you in?
We are in zone 5 and the variety of sweet potato we grow here is Georgia Jet , thanks for watching 👍
Congratulation on your grand harvest ! and thanks for sharing. I just subscribe your channel. I "harvested" my purple stoke yesterday. First time planting sweet potato in my life. In zone 8, planted mid may, this
spring has been cold at the 50's- 60's. For 2 plants in a big clay
pot, I got 12 pcs tiny sweet potatoes, the largest are the size of skinny green beans. I promise myself to build a compost pile asap and plant the sp in it next year. I would appreciate it very much if you could answer some questions: 1, Did you water your compost pile after planting? 2, how much water approximately? How old/mature the compost is ready to plant? Was it Beauregard that you planted?
Thank you kindly.
The leaves were from last fall when the leaves fell we bagged them and set them in a circle border the grass clippings were from this year we put a layer of leaves in the bed then a layer of grass clippings also a couple shovels of soil in each layer and a half a cup of Burpee organic fertilizer 3-6-4 ( any low nitrogen fertilizer will work ) in each layer like a lasagna until we reached the top of the bags then we watered it in heavy to start the composting process watering it a couple times a month , a couple months later we planted our Georgia Jet slips and the compost pile was still warm so I planted more slips then we needed in case of die off ( which some did ) but I do this every year and knew it would happen . After a month they began to look better and started growing great I didn't start watering until after the spring rains and then only 2 times a month unless it was really hot when the leaves started yellowing I tossed a cup of the same organic fertilizer right on top and watered it in and that was it . I have videos in my playlist showing the planting process , this method works great for us and I have done this with the Beauregard variety but I switched to Georgia Jet for better yield in our zone 5 climate thanks for watching and hope this helps 👍
@@citylotgardening6171 Thank you very much for taking the time to reply in such detail. Really helpful. I have started sweeping the autumn leaves on the sidewalk, put them in a yard waste can mixed with vegi and fruit scrap, hopefully can get some grass clipping from somewhere, etc. follow your method to build the compost for next year. Thanks again and God bless.
"Not too shabby" you been watching them fence builders from England?😁
Thanks for watching 👍
how you plant them by slips?
Yes I start my own slips from the potatoes we harvest this is Georgia Jet variety thanks for watching 👍
How did they get so big
The potatoes aren't restricted growing in leaves and grass clippings above ground in a compost pile . I grew this variety in the ground many years and the soil gets compacted even if watered properly so I decided to grow them above ground in leaves and grass clippings and organic fertilizer they do much better and this is how I grow them every year I have other videos in my playlist on my channel that show how I get started growing these if your interested , thanks for watching 👍
