This is a quick fix for any mac user having black screen after installing Windows 10 on bootcamp. All Apple computers with black screen with or without cursor
Thank you. I tried installing Windows 10 years ago on my late 2009 iMac 27” but this black screen was the show stopper. Back then you could still squeak by with Windows 7 but Windows 10 is a must now. Thank you!
I remember back in the Win Xp days that yanking out files like that meant a reinstall. But I was headed that way anyway out of a whole day's frustration. And I've sorely reminded why I dislike windows since Vista. But I digress, thanks for the fix. It caught my error rebooted and reinstalled necessary files back into place. Thank you for posting.
I love you so much! I was going mad, literally for this problem. With my imac 9.1 of 2009 o installed perfectly mojave and I wanted windows 10 on external disk. Great info on how to install but after 5 mins black screen!!!!!! I only linked the external ssd to my MacBook air (of course no problem with it) and deleted that fxxxxing file on Windows 10. Link again with my imac and tadaaa. Screen normal! This together with brigadier for the drivers saved me. Thank you so so much
once taken out and back into windows does anything need to be done to be fully updated on drivers and have it working again? do i replace the file deleted back into the drivers folder or would that cause it to black screen again?
Worked like a charm. In my case it was easier to just enable safe mode from the installation media and then log in to Windows and delete that file. Same thing done differently. I did not have macOS installed hence why. I don't know where you got this from but thanks a lot!
Hello, i have a Nvidia GeForce GT 650M 512 graphic on an iMac late 2012, i have the same problem at last windows update i got black screen with mouse cursor only. do you now what driver i should find? thank you.
Nice, my mac was showing a frozen white screen when i try to boot into windows. But after doing this, i can boot into windows again. Thanks for the help.
hi, would it fix the issue of this black screen on start up in windows/ imac 21.5 12,1(mid 2011) High sierra- "No bootable device-----insert boot disk and press enter..." or do you hv a fix or so for this error of booting.. I do hv to boot via ALT key every time i restart windows for driver updates... thou windows 10 is functioning properly except for this start up boot issue.. any suggestions
you can delete from safemode, ive installed win 10 on late 2009 imac, had the black screen issue, your solution works... im just getting a notification saying display might not work correctly until a suitable driver installed
Used before then had a problem with transfering the system to other partition. Now the partition is able to boot but goes black. The file was not there and I found the file somewhere but with the name atikmdag.sy_ I changed the name to atikmdag.sys because I thought perhaps I changed from EFI to MBR but it did no good. Perhaps the .sy_ was not the right file.
Thank you for this. I tried lots of ways of getting out of a black screen and this was the only one that worked. It couldn’t find the file you used, but I copied the Intel graphic drivers from the Bootcamp drivers into the Windows/System 32/Drivers folder and it worked. Big thank you!
what do you mean by this did you just copy the intel folder to the drivers folder? inside the intel folder theres a folder called chipset and some appications.
Hamid Perez From memory I'm sure that I simply dropped them into the Drivers folder. After a lot of work I got Windows working but couldn't get built-in sound to work so have to use a Bluetooth speaker. Saying that I barely use Windows 🤪

May i ask for help. I downloaded windows 10 for macbook (2020) it was successfully downloaded and i adjusted the brightness to the lowest then when i turned off the auto brightness setting mu screen went black. Thank you in advance for your response, sir. I tried restarting it but it becomes black after the loading screen, it dosen’t make it to the log in screen.
Try resetting windows if you have nothing on or if you can boot into safe mode do so and revert the settings. Also igdkmd64.sys driver this file is responsible for the graphics card you can delete that also it will reset the display driver to generic ms driver
No such file on windows 10 on this 2010 mac mini. But I only get to see the windows desktop after a clean install. Once you reboot, I get 10 seconds of windows logo and right to no video, every time after the first. So frustrating!
Extra Note, you can also do this with a Windows 10 USB Stick, open the Command Prompt Recovery Tools, cd C:, cd Windows, then cd System32 and finally cd drivers and then type del atikmdag.sys and you are now free to close and restart the computer and it will work.
Thank you very much!! But I'm still with this issue. In my Sytem32 folder didn't exist this file: atikmdag.sys. I have iMac 27'' (end 2013). Windows 10. Catalina. I'm desperated. I don't know what to do. Could you help me, please?
My model: MacBook Pro mid 2012. Intel graphics card. Deleted monitor.sys as I was not able to find the file you mentioned. And now I'm able to go past black screen.
Update: As mentioned in one of the comments , instead of deleting monitor.sys, When the black screen appeared, I unplugged the power cord and the display turned on and later adjusted the brightness and plugged back the power cord and now even when the power cord is plugged in, the black screen is gone!!!
You have to boot into safe mode then uninstall the driver, and install the driver through safe mode. If you are able to install the drivers through safe mode and the problem persist disable the graphics card.

Helpful video thanks. But for other viewers, after continued issues and even more reading, it seems a better solution which provides better driver support and stability is to install Windows in Legacy BIOS mode (using mbr partition scheme) instead of installing in UEFI boot mode which uses GPT partitioning scheme - as that scheme isn't supported well by pre-2012 macs. Then these issues are reportedly solved. Google "mac mini 2011 legacy boot"
