I was very forunate to be part of the world premiere of this concerto in 1989 at Eton College. The soloist, then, was Christian Lindberg. The accompanying band was Sun Life (Brass) Band of Bristol. Derek Bourgeois was present throughout the whole afternoon, whilst we rehearsed before that evening's concert. Every so often Christian would stop and then start having a friendly argument with Derek over dynamics or tempo or some other aspect of the performance. One particular discussion was at 13:06 where the band is playing the theme at triple forte. In the original score the trombone is resting at that time, but Christian yelled, "Why I am not playing?". Derek replied, "Because the tutti band is so loud you won't be heard". Christian, "You leave that up to me, I'll be heard.". Christian did play it and it was heard. Derek then changed the score. There were a number of late changes made by these two and are all, now, within the score perfomed here. The next day Christian went off the record the wind band version of the concerto. We went home with a job well-done. Also well done Peter Steiner, beautifully played.

Seems like that wind recording was never released then. At least not under the BIS label back then.

This is hands down the best trombone concerto out there. And you do it justice! It’s one of the few that shows how much the trombone is capable of, both lyrically and technically. What would you expect when it was written for Christian Lindberg?!?! Lol
