  • People really did lose their lives fighting for democracy in Britain, most dramatically of all at St Peter's Square in Manchester, 1819. Thousands of ordinary workers and tradespeople gathered for a peaceful rally organised by the Manchester Patriotic Union, to discuss how to improve representation for the cities in the face of an unfair and corrupt electoral system. The drama - and horror - that followed came to be known as the 'Peterloo Massacre'.

Fascinating. The story of Peterloo has been passed down through my family. My 3 x great grandfather was a witness to Peterloo, and spoke as a witness for the defence in the trial of Henry Hunt in 1820.

Nicholas Klein, a trade union activist, said in a speech, “First they ignore you. Then they ridicule you. And then they attack you and want to burn you. And then they build monuments to you.” From Amalgamated Clothing Workers of America convention (1918).

and so it persists and actually gets worse. The latest proposals for the boundary changes actually enable Tory dominance further (strange that!) so until we all embrace true PR we will never be rid of this corrupt version of democracy.
