- As 19th century British workers gathered together in the cities created by the Industrial Revolution, a new movement emerged calling for democracy - the Chartists. They first tried a peaceful petition to achieve their goals. When that failed, what could they do next? Things came to a head in 1839 in the town of Newport, South Wales.

Makes me very proud to be able to call John Frost an ancestor
Newport didn't becomea City until 2002. Thr Chartist rebels
came mainly from the Valleys of Monmouthshire.
Have only just found your channel with Vid of the Levellers. I have a few of your posts to enjoy and catch up with. Looking forward to your further posts : )
You're very welcome, Chris!
Good introduction style. Cute cat tactic.
Ha! He's very tolerant!
@@RadicalHistory how did you get the David Attenborough voiceover?
@@jonday7250 Ha glad you recognised him ;) There are some good voice artists out there! But we're experimenting with different accents as Schrodinger is from Czechia originally.
i always thought they were peacefull
Great video, however - theres never just 2, theres always 3. The 3 things that made the chartists possible were, 1. Education [the seeds of democracy] 2. Perception 3. Being Welsh - though - I can see how the English overlook that factor. But yes, the reason we have democracy is because of the Welsh/Cymry aka the indigenous Britons [not Brit~ish]. Yet, the first and last person to be hung drawn and quartered on this isle was a Welsh man - by the order of an Englishman... and look how much further we have sunk under English rule? #AnnibyniaethRwan
