  • Welcome my wonderful friends, thank you so much for tuning in! 😊 Today I am discussing the topic of HEALTHISM - the concept that being healthy is "good" and unhealthy is "bad". I explore the question of whether or not healthier people are better people and delve into how fatphobia and healthism are interlinked. I also talk about how orthorexia can result from feelings of needing to be healthy. I would love to hear your opinions on this topic, so please drop me a comment below!

The first couple of videos that pop up when I search “healthism” on CZcams actually deny it and promote it, citing laziness and such. I’m glad you made this video, and here’s to getting your message out there!

I really think people lose sight of what morality is. Many, many people in the spaces I enter will say being healthy is morally good, and being unhealthy is a personal responsibility that is morally inferior. But when you really think about what behaviors make you immoral: abuse, murder, stealing, cheating, degrading people, destroying property, greed, hate, anger, etc. If you were to really think about what is immoral I think it would be hard to put "eating sugar" or "having heart disease" on the same list.
Some of the kindest, most generous and selfless people I know do not attend to their own health in a way that does lead to poor health outcomes. I don't think anyone could call them immoral, while someone who is hyper focused on their health and afraid of illness, aging and death may be the most greedy and harmful to those around them.

We too often act as of empathy is an exhaustable resource.

I think pursuing good health is morally good, and being healthy is embodying that principle for a substantial period of time. By being healthy you can bring happiness and support to those around you ;-) that is definately a moral good!
Also, you say that people should be free, but, is a man most free when he can do what he wants and is enslaved to his base desires (ie gluttony), or is he most free when he is disiplined and in control of his actions and his desires through a strong moral framework? I think the latter; interested to see what you think.
Oh, and best of luck with your last year of Med School!

Thank you for such a thoughtful comment! I think people are most free when they can make their own choices and truly understand the choices they are making, so the best tool to hand patients is thorough education about their lifestyle choices. Empowering people with knowledge and the space to weigh up their own options even if they make "unhealthy" decisions is to grant them freedom (as long as they understand the implications!) and I feel that is a moral good 😊

Completely agreed with most of your thoughts, especially in the medical field...we have a lot of work to do unpacking our fatphobia, which is very hard considering we are taught to make a lot of assumptions about our patients from the first week of medical school!

Thank you so much! Yes I'd love to have more teaching on how to genuinely assess health & lifestyle without making split judgements based on what the scale says/BMI!

Found this so interesting, I think it’s a really important topic that doesn’t get a lot of attention! Earned a new sub for sure!
