- The never-ending quest to satisfy humankind's senses has led to some magnificent culinary creations. But it's also caused great conflict - from the toppling of leaders to the creation of empires. In this episode, Tony embarks on a gastronomic journey from the origins of the famous Pavlova dessert, to the discovery of one of the world's greatest wine regions. He time travels back to the early days of Australia's colonial settlement and learns how rum sparked a mutiny that brought down a government. A century later Tony finds out why something as common as beef caused one of the worst riots in Adelaide's history. Finally, Tony uncovers how a 17th-century corporate monster waged war across the globe, over the humble coffee bean and tea leaf. It's a remarkable story of power, greed, and corruption.

So... I was expecting a nice 26 minute long documentary on "Why The British Got China Hooked On Opium" and all I got was 3 minutes... WTF? Please change the title.
Same!! And the way they made the video was really a slap in the face to all humans beings in both countries that suffered from their greed.. it's as if the video made light of the truth & the horrors of what the British Monarchy has done to so many Countries & all the innocent people!
I was looking forward to Asian history for once on this channel and am disappointed.
I just left a little bit longer rant for the same reason. That was a cutesy little whitewashed show about nothing. I went to it expecting to maybe learn something I didn't know. Instead, I'm dumber than I was before I watched it.
Wasted my time
It’s the way of social media. It’s called click bait.
I came expecting a documentary on Opium and the Opium wars in China. I got about three to four minutes on the East India trading company and tea near the end of a 26 minute video.
Im 23 minutes in and I dont think the host has even said the word "opium"
Money, thats why and when China banned opium, UK went to war with them.
Exactly! The opium wars! if people think they've stopped they're crazy.. still are the worlds biggest drug dealers.
@@alohajenn Yep. And the CIA has it's greasy hands in it too
@@stovepipe9232 Agree 💯!! "the war on drugs" a total joke! Vatican, British Monarchy, CIA.... The ones really controlling the Corporation of America & the rest of the World!
To be honest, China was asking for silver for their cheap herb known as "Tea" today.
What does any of this have to do with opium????
That's what I'm trying to find out!! Booze is good and all, but NOT what I clicked on this for!
They get to opium at 20:50
@@theresaromero2855 Thanks. Like 2 sentences only.
@@houseofsolomon2440 i saw that. Ridiculous, wasn’t it?
@@theresaromero2855 Yes. Misleading title. Just some old brits talking about the glory days 😴
I wanted opium !
CLICKBAIT..OVER 16 MINS INTO A 26 MIN VIDEO YET NOT A SINGLE MENTION OF OPIUM..
They get to opium at 20:57
Thank you..its 99.99% nothing about opium = CLICKBAIT STILL..CLICKBAIT IS DISHONEST..DISHONEST = UNSUBSCRIBE..
@@agentcovert The pavlova is worth it :)
I'm not sure that's the proper title.
But the oldest vine is thought to be in Slovenia, it's 400 years old and still producing grapes.
Actually, the Dutch East India Company (VOC) was the biggest company in the world. Today it would be about $7.8 trillion worth. It was the worlds first mulitnational company and had dominance between 1602 and 1796. They also had the world first stock exchange.
Furthermore, I love this channel. But can agree with many people how misleading the title is to its content.
Wow that is impressive. Esp considering that they basically had to build their own Army,Navy, Banking institutions and Intelligence gathering to protect their business interests and employees across the globe. Everything from Tinkers, Tailors, Sailors, Stockbrokers and CEO's. A Proxy Government with more power and international influence than 90% of actual Countries of that time. Thank you for the info - that will be my next subject to research.
well, you got a second view out of me because i thought i ended up clicking the wrong video - since this is a 26 minute video about wine, not opium
the sandwich analogy was rather strange
Yep, hope someone ate them :P
Did seem ironically wasteful given they were talking about a food riot during a terrible time of poverty.
didn't think it was necessary really.
I really took umbrage at the waste of food when discussing the beef rebellion. Not necessary, especially in a world where people still go hungry.
I would've ate it off the table later and shared some with a few stray 🐕🐶
I like the show but it's a shame that it used clickbait to draw me in. There's so much more to learn about the Opium Wars than the whitewashed narrative given here. I like Tony Robinson and I'm a huge fan of Time Team but I'm a bit warn out on the history "they" want us to believe and not learning history the way it happened. Don't you think the East India Co. dumping opium on China (like China is dumping fentanyl on the US) (payback?) deserves more than a minute and a half. Especially, when it's the premise of the title.
Agreed.
I've been waiting and waiting for them to get to that! Then I saw your comment! ❤️😁
I think I'll stop the vid at 8 minutes and find one about how the brits really got people hooked on opium
I'm not even all the way through it but I can't imagine they will even touch on how governments are the biggest drug dealers around (Still).
Same here, the click bait makes me just not want to finish the video
I was surprised at this video's insensitivity to the fact of the indigenous slaughter carried out by European settlers in Australia!
The title is misrepresented
Tony Robinson has got to be my favorite narrator/host when it comes to historical type shows like this lol
This is about the worst documentary on the opium trade I've ever seen. He didn't really speak too much about what exactly took place at all, what a waist of time.
I know
My waist got bigger just watching it
@@paullarochelle8642 although "What an absolute waist" could pass easily as a creative insult nowadays
Barely touched on the subject

@@eddiesroom1868 👍😂😂😂😂
Whelp the sandwich part was a bit disconcerting 🥴
13 min in no word on opium...
Love Tony's demonstration of the beef riot using the sandwiches for people and squirting catsup all over everything representing blood. Very creative. BUT a waste of good food. I'm hungry!
I clicked on this to learn about the opium trade. Got everything but opium
Apologies for the misunderstanding. This series is comprised of many short segments. For this reason, we use the chapter function for ease of access to the subject teased in the title.
i will say this once if you want to create fun amazing interesting shows about anything please watch all british tv i cannot state how incredibly profound absolute histories work group is staff tony is an incredibly gifted performer this is funny not even sure its intentional but super funny interesting music i mean this is why i want to be an entertainer i love this show & all british anything thank you for being an amazing example of how to create a show its a travel food comedy history show i just cant even right now keep it up you guys are so fun!

CLICKBAIT. MISLEADING TITLE 🤨
16:00 - AND WASTING FOOD LIKE A SPOILT BRAT TOO. I LIKE THIS OLD MAN, BUT THIS EPISODE IS JUST PLAIN WEIRD.
A Documentary about opium that barely makes a suggestion of it? I kept waiting to hear about it, and waited and awaited until I was disappointed. I love the Absolute History channel, but this was not worth the watch.
very cool topics, didnt expect to see them on youtube.
The oldest grape vine in in north carolina America. Its over 400 years old. Yall could have googled it
Can you at least put Tony's face in the thumbnail?
Why do all these docos have misleading titles
Is it just me or does William Blye look exactly like Tony Robinson 🤔
Disappointed he didn’t open this episode by creepily eating a raw steak.
Tony is hooked on Nigerian kielbasa
Australian wine is great, it make the French one taste like watered out prunes. I didn't know though that it was the oldest wines in the world.
French wines had been tasting like watered out prunes (if one's lucky) for several centuries now. All there is left to the legendary French wines is the legend itself. The product is no longer worth much.
@@OstblockLatina I think it used to be considered a war crime (or something similar) to cut the wines of enemy nations in the middle ages. I really recommend the Jacob's Creek brand mentioned in the documentary, and it's even really economic.
We are glowing. But there are two types of Pav. The soft marshmallow type, and the crispy chewy type. I don't think this has been properly scientifically acknowledged yet. Crikey, there's room for an Ignoble here.
I enjoy this channel so much ❣️ 🇺🇸.
I've always heard of William Bly!!
When u gonna do the documentary on why China got the U.S. hooked on fentanyl?
Child's play compared to what they did to Irish Geals
Thats why covid is warfare....loss of taste is torture
I had a 45 of Itchycoo Park.
I tried watching this earlier. Where's the documentary on opium? Change the title.
Very Wasteful on the food..
2 mn on opium…😡🤬
Flimsy. To say the least. Historical content, development of opium trade, political use and social consecuences are hardly investigated. Dunno if you've changed the content manager or what is going on there but for the most part your last docs have been the worst of the lot by far this year. Maybe cut the poppy-sniffing?
There you go, have my dislike.
Yea... if your not a brit.. I'm done.. cause I just read this entire thing in a British accent. Either way, I totally agree..its all been full of flimsy race bating logic.. 🤷🏼♀️
Running scared of social media censorship? PS if you notice. Thanks to the overwhelming number of dislikes a certain politician is receiving. We no longer can see the number of dislikes a video received. 1984
title doesn't match content.. why? are all the other videos also mislabeled?

Fucking up shit was a bonus.
I feel certain that eventually someone used opium in this video... No?

Please stop these misleading titles...we deserve better! We love your channel 100% but the titles...
VOC..the batavia / Dutch
1) This is not about opium trade nor the opium wars. Just a little mention, somewhere towards the end of the video.
2) In an attempt to explain the beef riots, which were about food shortages, they use sandwiches, sausages and cheese as an analogy and ruin perfectly good food. And that in a time where people are still dying from hunger.
Shame!
Nicely done! Your work is appreciated! The chess scenes were a nice touch as well!
Why did Britain get hooked on opium? Have you ever tried opium?
Yess....I made it here 🥇
Great video but wasn't a fan of the demonstration with the chess and especially the food :/ what a waste
I love these shows and Tony Robinson. However... THIS one had a "click-bait" title. Not a word about how devastating Opium was to the populace of China, the Opium Wars or that the greed of The East India Company was flagrant beyond imagination. For tea? Really? It was MUCH MORE than that. Please, Absolute History: start delivering on your titles' promises. Australian wine and some stupid cake got much more air time than the Opium insanity.
Edit: Oh, and: that incredible waste of food to illustrate a mutinous battle actually turned my stomach. And it purportedly came from a tray of food meant for a table of hungry patrons. That was a rather tasteless bit of staging, really.
Thumbs down for misleading title. Really wanted to know more about the opium wars and British oppression of the Chinese. But it’s only a small mention near the end, and totally downplays the atrocities committed.
But really, I guess I shouldn’t have expected the hard truth of oppression and genocide in the name of the British empire from a British show🫠🙃
How much would you either have to love rum or hate your wife in order to sell her for just four gallons?
Hell, you'd have to pay me at least five to take mine off my hands.
Less than a minute out of a half hour is on the title subject. It’s not a bad show, but it would be better if it wasn’t a lie at the start.
From the way Tony is treating all of that good food at that table, I'm assuming this had been filmed before the Brexit-induced food shortages in Britain?
Talk about clickbait.
WHY DID HE EAT THE PAVLOVA LIKE THAT. Disgustin.
Ithis
What's with the food wasting?? Booo!
That is not how chess works. Just saying
awesome videos thnx
Deceptive. Barely anything about the opium trade.
I was expecting history
They really pad out the subject to death this video could’ve been 8 minutes so we really need the sandwich/ chess demonstrations?! My lord what a waste of time
oh my god!!!! seriously dropping food on table and walks away...
Wow what a waste of food with that cafe example of sandwiches and cheeses
Good material & great history , but you try to blow thru it way too fast & the corny humor just does not fit .
I feel like they barely even touched on Opium in China from the British, there are MUCH better videos out there on the subject that go into far more detail than this did...
PHASE 2:
COVID "vaccines"
You need to change the title....disappointed.
Hmmm… seriously..??!!?… using food and smearing it across a table to demonstrate your story… ??!
CATHOLICS not Christians...love their wine.. get it right.
hahahahaha get dunked china wtf
imagine having cast iron literally 500+ years before everyone else and losing to a poppy
you realize most countries have an opiod problem of some kind. i despise china, but better they had it back then, than now, where the cartels are putting fentanyl in which kills more people in a year than the corona virus ever will.
You're obviously ignorant of the fact that the reason we're where we are today is a direct result of the corruption and greed of the families that were The East India Co.
@@TUSK1157 he is largely memeing tho.
I’m more concerned with China’s ongoing present day fentanyl attack on the west.
Maybe that's China's revenge. Instead, it should be aimed at Israel. Now, the Sackler family is continuing what Sasson started with opioids.
I agree! Maybe it's still the uk running the show! I have a friend who's 14yr old Daughter who overdosed last month. She decided it would be a good idea to try coke for the 1st time & do it on Tick-tock... The coke turned out to be fentanyl & she overdosed & died live on Tick-tock!! Addiction & the deaths
from illegal & prescription drugs, that's the real pandemic!
@@Stevie-J Thank you! I agree, it is very important for people to understand how strong it is & it's nothing to mess around with! Unfortunately, every other drug is being laced with fentanyl, including pot so most (like my friends daughter) have no clue they're even taking it. I had a conversation with someone recently on this topic & they mentioned that Heroin isn't coming into America like it was because the Poppy Fields in Afghanistan were burned & alot of the heroin was coming from there. Who knows, but it sure seems like the fentanyl crisis has gotten much much worse.
Such a terrible country... I recently visited one of their museums, all stolen artifacts from other countries, just terrible 🤭
Wow, 18 minutes in before you finally breach the subject of your title. I love history and I honestly wanted to know more about the Opium Wars. Your click-baiting is very disappointing. I don’t think I’ll be viewing anymore of your shows. Goodnight!
The Chinese still hold this against the British and to some extent they are right to but-- the British did not sell Opium to each and every user., the Chinese decided to buy it, sell it and use it ,. The same goes for America - Those that make it and ship drugs are to blame to some extent - but its the Americans who buy it, distribute it and use it.
Nice revisionist outlook you have there.
Tell me - when did Mexico, Colombia, and the like, go to war to force America to open its ports to addictive drugs? What, never?
Your revisionism is as bogus as your analogy.
@@lairdcummings9092 You seem not to understand my point. They, the makers of drugs did not force anyone - the Americans and other users, dealers, did that themselves - the same for the Chinese - no one forced them to accept Opium - the Chinese were at war with each other- the British as sellers and Chinese as buyers took advantage of the poor situation. No one forced the ordinally Chinese to sell or use Opium. That is my point.
@@RDSimpson which point does *NOT* square with what actually happened; thus, your point is revisionist, and wrong.
@@lairdcummings9092 I lived in Japan and China for 28 yrs. I have a fairly good idea of what happened/ You seem to not understand history. Try to broaden what you read.
@@RDSimpson gat makes your position even more morally reprehensible.
The British showed up, malice aforethought, cargo holds full of addictive drugs, and *forced* the Chinese government to allow them to sell their poison, *at gunpoint.*
And you're apologizing for that by blaming the addicts who had the opium pushed at them by the imperial might of the British Empire.
That is a disgusting and vile point of view. You sicken me.
I liked this guy til this episode. Rude to wait staff and cuts people off when they're talking. Misleading title with a few cool facts I guess... But cringe worthy indeed.
Tasteless, and just sad. What a waste of space this show is and quit wasting food while talking about starving people rioting for it god damn
Jeez, is it necessary to talk while stuffing your face? Yuck
Meh, Britain gave them ample opportunity to trade something other than opium. In the 1790s they sent a diplomatic mission and tried to introduce steam engines and mechanical clocks and a whole assortment of new inventions but unfortunately for the Chinese the senile corpulent Qing emperor chose to foolishly waved away Britains generous offer as barbarian baubles thereby delaying the modernisation of China by decades . If they hadn't been so arrogant they could've been an early adopter of industrialisation, guess they should've just bought the clocks and regency era brick a brack when they still had the chance! Unlike China Japan was smart and they continued to study western sciences and technology even during the age of official isolation, thats why Japan was able to modernise and industrialise so rapidly while China got left behind.
This comment is so disgusting , and one wonders why racism and imperialism is hard to be eradicated.
Imagine being a couple out for lunch and seeing Baldrick playing with sandwiches.
