Here is my say after 10 years in this country. Luxembourg offers good opportunities for jobs (mainly finance and tech). Salaries are good, but the housing expenses will be a big chunk in your budget. (for example prices are comparable to Bethesda, MD, but without all the DC area way of life). The healthcare system is very good, and well as the public transportation system (actually free !). But the traffic is horrible. The public school system is not well adapted for expats (if you arrived with a teen, you will have to put him in an English speaking private school... $$$, because it will be hard for him or her to catch up with german, french, or luxemburgish). The city is beautiful and the country, though small , has nice places to visit (like the Sure valley). The country is truly cosmopolitan, but there is not a real local vibe that you can feel. It is boring after a while and the capital is small. That's while on the week ends, we often drove to closeby cities of Metz or Nancy in France where we had more fun and where it was cheaper. Also Paris is not that far (2 hours in train). It is difficult to socialize with the locals, who seem to live between them. Now, we are moving back to the US. Coming in Luxembourg can be a true opportunity for your career, but for the rest, you have a think well before moving here.

Just last 2 weeks ago I went to this beautiful country , I went too in paris , Brussels, Amsterdam and brugge in Belgium. And I think if I can visit again of any of these , then I surely choose luxembourg, brugge .
It's not so crowded plus it has free public transportation which you can really save per month even though its a bit boring like I mean restaurant or nightlife. But even though its almost perfect it might sound but who knows what's the dark side of this beautiful country.

@@vvalk2vvalk respecting local culture = 1. accepting it as it is, without imposing other cultures/languages or blaming locals for not speaking other languages.
      2. Learning at least one of the official languages of the country. Learning one of them , in case someone is planning to live in Luxembourg.

    • @vvalk2vvalk

@@user-fw6cb4fw7t This country has several national languages. The additional benefit of learning one of tbem isn't that large.
Learning a language also reauires a lot of commitment. This time could be used working harder in your job, or on additional projects. A lot of people coming to Lux come for 3-5 years before moving elsewhere. It is cool learning a new language, but if person doesn't find it interesting and knows he is leaving in few years - I dont see why him not learning a language would be considered 'not respecting the culture'.
I honestly think it has nothing to do with respecting the culture, but rather integrating into the culture. And that's different.

@@vvalk2vvalk when someone goes as a guest to someone's place, does he/she impose things to the landlord, or he /she gets along with the settings of the landlord?
Is imposing onself and refusing to go with the landlords flow kind of lack of respect?
Therefore imposing onself and pushing others to speak English, is that respectful or not?
Imagine what it will happen if Luxembourg's government imposes it's official languages on foreign workers and doesn't issue work oermits to people who don't speak German or French or Luxemburgish?
if we consider the issue from only job perspective, learning one of the official languages of Luxembourg raises the chances of finding job in Luxembourg. By not knowing any local languages and by looking for English speaking jobs only, that narrows down the job opportunies.
Secondly, one of the official languages of Luxembourg is German, a language which is spoken in the richest countries of the world (Switzerland, Germany, Austria, Lichtenstein, Luxembourg). Therefore even if someone wants to leave Luxembourg after 3-5 years, by knowing German he/she may look for attractive job offers in the above mentioned German speaking rich countries.
Therefore, in someone's CV if there is an additional language like German or French, that will be an advantage to find a better job in a better country 😉

This is false advertising. One reason I moved to Luxembourg was because I thought it was expat friendly but this is so far from reality! I’ve lived in 6 countries and Luxembourg was by far the WORST country !!! First of all people are extremely aggressive and rude, and then on top of this there is very little to do (everything closes early) and very low quality options across the board: poor quality restaurants for example compared to any other international hub. And worse of all it is NOT family friendly! Yes there are parks and get money back for crèches but everything is complicated and few good options for international schooling . Standards are not adequate compared to US UK and Germany. On top of this there is racism and xenophobia towards many foreigners - my wife was told to go back to her country and there are countless stories of discrimination! Even though we reported to police they don’t care. Even the big Portuguese community who are raised in Lux have no voice and are second class In Luxembourg. This is why many expats are leaving. It’s too expensive to afford a home and lifestyle is very poor so after all this we decided to pull the plug of this misadventure!!!!
