Last time we looked at the 7th Kenpachi, Kuruyashiki - this time, we're talking about his killer, the 8th Kenpachi, Soya Azashiro! In the second of our two-part series, we'll be taking a look at the man with perhaps one of the most broken, in more ways than one, Bankai in the entire series of Bleach, as well as his character and the role he plays in the light novel Spirits Are Forever With You!

I think I prefer Kuruyashiki I appreciate the honor he has for a character as powerful as he is! He also whoops ass in Brave Souls lol trying to unlock him.

The reason that Aizen's zanpakuto would be useless against Azashiro is because Kyoka Suigetsu can't work if the target is touching the blade. And since Azashiro can fuse with the air around them, it would be impossible for Aizen to keep Azashiro from touching Suigetsu.
I mean that too, but if the guy is that intimately connected to reality he's going to know if something he's seeing isn't real regardless.
I mean it says it took him two days to overcome kyoka.
Gin said it best: Aizen isn't strong because of Kyoka Suigetsu.
Aizen's spiritual pressure forms a dense wall around him as shown in the TYBW so it's not far fetched to assume he could push all the air away from his Zanpukto with his reiatsu anyway. Aizen also became one with his zanpukto, we have no idea what his Bankai is or if he even needs one now so it's possible that touching his Zanpukto probably won't stop his Bankais power given that the Hogyoku bends reality to the users will and could theoretically fix Kyoka Suigetsu's "weakness" if Aizen willed it.
There is no way he would know to do that only gin knew that from being around aizen 24/7

His Zanpakuto looks like his sister is beautiful. In life she protected him, in death she was something of a guardian angel. They seem to have a similar personality as well
I don't see it as a guardian angel, more like trauma manifested, lack of ability to move on and living on his own. He needed his older sister to take care of him, which is understandable but clearly not healthy.

@@brandonford5993 It might help to remember that they’re not humans but soul reapers. But tesj I do agree about Trauma. Similar to Sajin’s tribes upgraded Bankai needing to rip out their hearts.
Know the former is a huge stretch as Soul Reapers age, frequently die from disease, starvation and other very very human ways. Had they stayed more abstract it could’ve changed a lot.

I'm quite happy that he does in fact have 3 weaknesses. 1 getting absorbed. 2 being physically weak and only relaying on hax 3 he can't become things that are too powerful for him to control. Such a creative, fun and strong zanpakto.

Hell arc could be the perfect opportunity to bring some light as to who and what all of the 2nd,3rd,4th,5th,6th,9th were like along some actual Azashiro, Giganjo and Kuruyashiki integration

@@darryledxavier6392 Azashiro himself decided to go back to Muken. He doesn't even needed to set free, he can do it himself any time, just like in SAFWY. The first time he was imprisoned he literally decided to go along with imprisonment in Muken because he heard Squad Zero is coming. Basically, Azashiro can leave Muken whenever he wants.
@@NeoNassim Not even that, Azashiro can simply leave Muken if he wants. After he lost to Kenpachi is SAFWY he literally gone back to Muken to train (because he wants to surpass Zaraki). If he wants to he can leave it at any point in time.
Another connection with Koga is that the era during Azashiro's youth when nobles were fighting each other is similar to Koga's backstory which described something similar.
I find both Gremmy and Azashiro very interesting because of their almost limitless potential. One can imagine anything into exsistence while the other can fuse and control anything in exsistence. Both limited by their mastery and inexperience to an unstoppable force, being defeated by Zaraki's brute strength. I wonder what Azashiro would have been like if either he took part in the Thousand Year Blood War or if he tag teamed with Aizen to take down the Ywach as the soul king.

I wonder how much more complicated things would be with him hearing about the hollowfication added to people to harm quincies or whatever? I wanna know if he's still alive and merged with Soul Society then howd he feel when it got turned to Wandenreich?

How does he feel about Quincies en masse wrecking his Soul Society... funny how Aizen called it His... if this guy was a Kenpachi did Aizen just realise he was the next kenpachi but also not really because of Unohana or something? and Decide to Not repeat his mistakes or...???
A lot of Possibilities I wonder how well they were explored in these stories... I wanna hear him and Aizen chatting when Aizen was a kid or something wild like that...
The Hell arc seems like a prime opportunity for a deep dive into the Kenpachi lineage. If we do see a mini-"Kenpachi arc" would you want to see Azashiro make a reappearance?

Tite Kubo still has a lot that he can do with Bleach. It would be amazing to get a history of the Gotei 13.
I hope he actually does go into that even if it takes long for him to do. I dont want him to feel rushed like last time

We definitely need a side series examining the Kenpachi and their abilities, histories, flaws and how they play into the history of Gotei 13 even if it's obvious already. That would be something I'd rather like.

See I want the Hell arc to (actually START first of all) introduce them. They're all in hell, imagine if to master his Bankai, Kenpachi had to fight all the other Kenpachi, maybe one by one as a B plot to whatever the mains are doing. Imagine fuckin' demon ogre looking Bankai Kenpachi in hell fighting other Kenpachi. Most metal thing they could do.
@@mastertucker Agreed. Given what happened in the real world the last time hell's minions showed up, this will be a crisis of unprecedented magnitude. Maybe Tokinada's goal of humanity finding out about the Spirit worlds in the worst ways will come to pass. The implications are wild.

@@DTK625 Right like Unohana had to pass that tradition on somehow. Maybe she appointed her vice captain and her switch to Squad 4 was seen as, and or covered up as, her death at their hands and so it went on from there.

Never known or cared much about the novels, but you’ve sold me on Azashiro. Pretty fascinating character.
That's great to hear! I didn't care much for SAFWY before looking into it a bit more. I'm still on the fence about some of the material, but I really enjoy the two Kenpachi introduced here.
His zanpakuto being stuck in bankai reminds me of Ichigo's being stuck in shikai after training with Urahara. I feel like his zanpakuto is simply too powerful for him as a shinigami, Ichigo had to literally beat his into submission multiple times before he was able to finally access his true bankai. So when his bankai manifested when he was a child, its like when White would take control of Ichigo and fight in his place, It saw the fact that its user was too weak to survive on his own and would end up getting her killed too so she broke through his inner world barrier and due to the fact that she is his zanpakuto and connected directly to his soul, only he can see her.
That's exactly right yeah, it's not natural and it seems like accessing your zanpakuto powers unnaturally generally makes them very strong, but unstable at best.
I'm of the belief that was actually ichigo's asauchi and what we all think is his bankai is a shikai (he got it in 3 days, right?) Dual swords is his true shikai(Old bankai is a false shikai quite literally named bankai and has the symbol for it in the tsuba) and then True bankai is true bankai.

After your first video on the other Kenpachi, I decided to read a SAFWY summary to prep myself for this video and I loved it! I think my favorite revelation was the reveal about Azashiro's zanpakuto having the face of his sister's. It was so bittersweet but I felt like it was fitting for a character like him. I loved the light novel, and I'm glad you're covering it :D these videos are so enjoyable to watch

Reminds of Toshiro's backstory where he was so strong that his freezing powers were leaking out when he slept.
Imagine if he never met Rangiku, never got a Asauchi or trained properly, and eventually Hyorinmaru manifested on his own to protect and fight for Toshiro.
He might frozen everything outside 1st division
His Grammy would have died lol...
and like Urozakuro, Hyorinmaru would've stay in a perpetual bankai state due to the unnatural way of awakening

Where to read this novel
So Spirits really are forever with you, his Zankaputo in a nutshell, quite fitting.
Makes lots of sense why 7th Kenpachi's Bankai would have been an issue for him, imagine taking that big bite out of a place he fused too.
I always find it interesting that Yumichika has one of the strongest zanpakto for being a side character. The light novels really put it into the spotlight, and it’s shown how strong it can be with the fight against...love horn? I forget his name lol

So his trauma / anger hit such a point he manifested his sister in the form of a limitless weapon that would protect him at all cost. I love how this was written. Would love episodes.
I love villians like this ,where they have a kind of broken logic to their plan, it's very procrustean in it's reasoning
I feel they could totally make this story into a movie since the anime is coming back, sometime late next year maybe or 2024
Honestly, when it comes to bleach your videos are some the very best out there. Keep up the great work, can't wait to see your videos on how the anime portrays certain events. I'm especially excited given that Kubo gave them all of the supplemental information he has (from his own mind and maybe CFYOW) that the animators may choose to include in TYBW given that Kubo had to wrap things up earlier than he would have liked to. So hopefully we learn a little bit more about things like Uryu's power and history, the Royal Guard, Spirit King, etc. Exciting time to be a bleach fan.

Thank you for approaching this character finally, I've been waiting impatiently. One addition I would like to mention about his childishness though:
To me it feels like the action of never letting go of his Bankai state is some sort of regression, he fears feeling endangered and vulnerable once more like in his childhood.
Sōya probably feels guilty about presenting any state of mind, due to the fact he believes that emotions almost lead to his premature demise.
I honestly hope this vid spreads far into the community, I've been talking about him by myself on Twitter for months, quite passionately. Even made a roleplay account for him but everyone is so clueless about him. I hope that won't be the case anymore!
He is essentially his own zanpakuto I suppose. Funny enough if the soul king wasn't introduced, azashiro would give you the impression of a soul king, being the air itself and being fused with all around him.
For fans who haven't read (or can't access) the light novels and other spin-off series' these videos are very interesting and we'd love to see more discussions about them
I really hope we get to know even more about old soul society, the other Kenpachis, etc in the future.

This also adds more evidence to the notion that as long as your spiritual pressure is intense enough, you can just negate enemies effects on you. Even with such a powerful ability, just Zaraki’s pure insane reiatsu just negs his ability.
This was literally my OC’s Bankai when I was like 14 but no one will ever believe me 😭😭😭
The love for all the Kenpachi, I love seeing it.. Especially because unlike most anime that have group the kenpachi has depth, not just hallow...
I have a theory that’s all the kenpachis Shika and Bankai share the same name, also share a living type (spirit type) bankai?

If the game Bleach Brave Souls accurately tells the SAFWY story, then my favourite part was getting to see a bit of Marechiyo Omeada's father, Marenoshin Omeada, in action.
Yea that was pretty awesome! I know the CFYOW story in BBS was pretty accurate so I would presume it's the same for SAFWY. Which is cool since we don't have an official English translation (yet)

I love the relationship that he has with his zanpaktou that is essentially the exact same relationship one might have with their siblings, almost like an older sister that is constantly belittling the younger brother just because they are older and so the younger brother just starts to withdrawal into himself and thus keeps to himself a lot snd seems quiet.

After watching this, I think what happened with his zanpaktou is that, when he saw his sister die, as she was, well, his sister, and at that moment, the only person he had left in the entire world, it essentially broke his mind, and his reality, and in that moment, he went into the deepest part of his psyche, his inner world, to a place where his sister was still alive, and could always protect him from everything, and thus his zanpaktou was born looking just like his sister.

They should try an animate Spirits Are Forever With You after they finish TYBW with that momentum still going. Slots in pretty well for the story, keeps the series interest going and maybe it'll motivate Kubo to write more than one chapter for the Hell Arc

Would love to see a video comparing his bankai to Ichibe’s abilities and others within the 0 division and see who would theoretically win.

Also I really appreciate you taking your time to mention Unohana in relation to Sōya. Imo due to him saying one must not enjoy battle because it's 'useless' and 'doesn't forsee Shinigami duties', he would probably be disappointed of the true core of the First Kenpachi. I imagine he would think that the title is rightful to him completely. All I needed from SAFWY was an interaction between the 1st & 8th Kenpachi
Excellent analysis! Azashiro gives me some major Sephiroth vibes and I’m not mad at that at all. I love the dichotomy between Uro Zakuro and Azashiro because it feels organic… like he has this power that was thrust upon him and suddenly he doesn’t matter anymore, only the power that he has been given. And furthermore, it feels like there’s more to his Zanpakuto spirit than just him imprinting onto an asauchi. It’s almost like the love of his sister imprinted onto his asauchi THROUGH him. It kind of reminds me of Gaara’s sand in Naruto, though obviously a little different in premise.
Loved this and the Kuruyashiki content brother, keep up the good work! If you’re considering suggested content I’ve been really thinking about some of the historical inspiration for characters in bleach and it could be cool content to explore. Someone like Sasakibe Chojiro possibly being inspired by Sasaki Kojiro

Honestly I like them both Azashiro and Kuyuyashiki I don't hate them but I don't love them either, that said I admit I do love how they are both ridiculously strong, with super powerful Bankai but have exploitable weaknesses that make sense to their abilities.
The real question is:
What if he fought koga kuchiki?
Also, I think unohana was probably not concerned at all because the only reason she stepped down was because she knew Zaraki was the true heir. She was waiting for him to find his way there the for hundreds of years if not longer. Anyway he’s a cool character, would have loved him when I was a teenager. Reminds me alot of Obito.
I'm curious how they decided her successor. I guess they could have had some sort of a last shinigami standing battle royale, whoever wins is 2nd Kenpachi.

He's like a perfect the compulsory. Instead of using nerves to control things, he just fuse with them.
It’s a weird coincidence that all the decently powerful nobles in bleach are pretty boys. The trend continues with tokinada. Young koga too I guess all the not ancient looking Kuchikis are like that.
A fascinating fact that azashiro being able to cast multiple kido at the same time highlights is that normally a shinigami can only ever cast one kido at a time due to being limited by having only one mouth this only being able to chant one incantation or call one spell name. Kind of like how hands are required for hand seals in naruto. It also makes the relatively unimpressive seeming double incantation rukia used against aaroneiro a bit more impressive.
I don’t want to say that kuruyashiki isn’t interesting but I think part of reception of the last video is that this content is new to many bleach fans. They aren’t familiar with this story or these characters unlike all the stuff in the manga.
You say it’s good that azashiro was given weaknesses because otherwise it would be ridiculous but that’s basically what zaraki is in the novels. Novel zaraki could probably beat yhwach. The additions to lore from the novels is amazing but in terms of fighting and power levels and general writing the narita novels definitely have some shortcomings.
Kubo said that narita understood zaraki’s power well but in the manga we see zaraki get owned by Gerard, Royd, pernida and if you reread the fight you’ll notice that even gremmy would’ve won if he hadn’t made the mistake of destroying his own body by imagining zaraki’s power. Seriously, kenny was so worn down at the end of that fight even the sternritter girls easily took him out and gremmy could still make clones and bodies. So what kubo says and what he writes are 2 different things.
This video was amazing. An incredibly good story. I think you should cover more of the supplementary material
He is a combination of shunsui and byakuya IMO. The way the woman drapes over him like shunsui’s zanpaktou is exactly the same.

I know this is kinda dumm joke but i feel like bleach characters got the face style set like, Ichigo face, Byakuya face, Grimmjow face, like the art style makes characters share very similar face to me, as for female faces i did not notice much similarities and neither did i try to
Orihime's face: the innocent beauty the large eyes the full upper lip. Shared with Nelliel
Kukaku Shiba face: the badass. Sharp eyes, sly smirk, sharp smile in their teeth. Shared with Yoruichi
Rangiku face: The mature beauty. Pronounced cheek bone, same large eyes, full upper and lower lip. The zero division chick with purple hair looks similar.

Interesting. It seems like he wanted to be challenged and captured. He could have and still could simply do WHATEVER he wants but simply didn't. He wasted time "infiltrating" the Gotei and started small scale with his plan when he could have just... did the damn thing to begin with.
I agree, it does seem that way. I also chalk it up to him not being entirely sure what he really wants.
I think the prior Zaraki would have been able to stop him , a few others too, like Unohana & Yama if pushed

I really don't like him as a character or the conceit of 'he is actually a very weak guy but with the strongest bankai' when his bankai is always on and there's nothing to truly challenge that within the scope of his narrative.
That said I think it'd be hilarious if a Sternritter just stole his bankai and this most overpowered-by-design character were knocked down a peg.
Qunicy by nature wreak him since his bankai is very vulurable to power absorption skills has brought up in can't fear your own world when a fullbringer can do basically the same defensive trick

I just realized that his goal almost mirrors Madara from Naruto, I think he could be the next big bad if they decide to continue the story after the 1000 year blood war arc.
Once again I ask could ichigos sisters rival his power if they trained like he did. They should have access to all the same powers given their heritage.
Not really though, ichigo's hollow abilities are unique to him as that is because if the fact that white has become one with ichigo specifically. Ichigos sisters might have quincy or fullbring powers but otherwise they won't be the same as ichigo.
Karin and Yuzu can't get Soul Reaper powers unless they die or get powers given to them by another Soul Reaper and only Ichigo has the Hollows powers since he has White. The only thing Karin and Yuzu can get from training is Quincy powers.

interesting how Kenpachi seems to be the go-to guy for dealing with utterly broken enemies. Gremmy, Gerard, and now Azashiro. basically, if someone has an "unbeatable" ability, you either get Ichigo or Kenpachi to ass-pull a victory.

Damn this guy’s bankai is overpowered. Now imagine if he actually trained 😱😱😱😱😱😱😱 he’d be a fucking monster that even zaraki couldn’t beat. His story is definitely sad and I wouldn’t mind if he returns in the hell arc to help out the gotei. He could have a great character arc and actually rediscover himself

This character is the explanation of Kenny’s character/ relationship with his Zanpacto. Stark is an example of being fully aware in control and feeling responsible for his creation. The 8th fully aware, but out of control. Kenny unaware out of control, but capable. Capped by his love for the original Yachiru

I have personally observed that all the male Shinigami a female Zanpakuto have a woman who they consider the most important person in their life. Zaraki and Unohana, Kyoraku and Nanao's mother, Urahara and Yoruichi and of course Azashiro and his sister.

@@DionysiosC pretty sure Kubo mentioned that. Every guy with a female Zanpakuto spirit had a woman who had a huge influence on them. Now the question is, is Urahara's Zanpakuto regarding Yoruichi, or someone else? 🤔 I hear some theories that Shutara from the 0 Division might be the actual woman who so deeply affected him. A mentor, or even his mother one person theorized.
I wonder if the title "Spirits Are Always With You" was a reference to the fact that Azashiro's Zanpaktou Spirit was stuck with him at all times.

The author would have to get Kubo's permission for something like that, the Bounts are filler creations.

Kuroyashiki could have used his bankai actually, pretty sure it was because if he did use it he would have killed all the spectators with it (his squad, kyoraku and more). not sure if it was mentioned somewhere though. they weren't in the seireitei though, i think they just won a battle somewhere and were celebrating when azashiro pulled up.
His relationship with his Zanpaktou kind of reminds me of the relationship between Light and Ryuk

I think he's like nearly an opposite of Zaraki. His bankai activated without his express consent, and it has remained released since then, while Zaraki couldn't speak to his zanpakuto for many years, even if she was right beside him, in a sense.
Would've loved to see him talking to Zaraki (current)
Based on what I've read, his zanpakuto is both a blessing and a curse. Constant bankai means constant OP ability activation. However, the catch is that he can never improve phsyically no matter how much he train. If he ever release his hold on his surroundings, he becomes vulnerable to basic attacks, not having the physicality to even evade them. Nonetheless, he just needs time to overcome his demons and control his zanpakuto. In theory, I think Urozakuro's blindfolds signify Azashiro's blindness or detachment to reality, as evident to his absurd plan that does not put consequences into the equation. If he can free himself from his mental shackles, like how Zaraki did, he might gain total control of Urozakuro, and maybe have a shikai that's more manageable to work with.
It also takes tons of spiritual pressure in order to stay active, he’s one of those unique characters like aizen who are above your average peak soul reaper

I wish we knew more about the 7th kenpachi. I've never been a fan of introducing a new 'powerful' character just to have a newer 'more powerful' character kill them without any issue. It just doesn't seem like good storytelling

The novels are really bad with that imo. I can't feel any stakes because you know nobody in the current roster dies, and if we ever get a hell arc you know they're only gonna get beaten by bigger bs. (Looking at you Kenpachi)
