@@salvadorperez8537 this isn’t even their first tournament upset. Their history is giving teams arachnophobia in March. Auburn with Charles Barkley in 1984, defending champion Indiana in 1988, beating 2 seed Syracuse as a 15 seed in 1991. They were the first to ever do that, now it’s pretty commonplace.

@@funsims1217 I chose Richmond because I've been keeping an eye on Iowa all year and I liked how Richmond played in their confrence tournament and thought they could beat Iowa. And they did.
I had Richmond in sevral of my brackets. I didn't joint the Iowa hype train like the resto f the nation. Big Ten is so overrated it's not even funny.

The color commentators need to work on being impartial; this is the second game I have watched where they are transparent in their preference for larger programs from large conferences. Always Iowa needs to do this and this is good for Iowa. Might as well just say you are rooting for Iowa.
To be honest, I thought watching the game as an Iowa fan that they were just bad altogether. It seemed they really didn't know that much about either team and they made observations that did not really match the game. Right after halftime Iowa's coach, Fran McCaffrey said he felt they had a lot of good looks that just weren't falling and the color commentary guy said he thought they had almost no good looks which was not true. Mostly I just thought they weren't a very great commentary duo in general.
I played high school ball with Jacob Gilyard. He’s always been cold, glad to see him proving it on the biggest stage in college basketball

Kind of sounds like you hating in a way.
You see it every tournament: A higher seed plays tight and cold under the weight of expectation, and the lower seed plays on fire, free with nothing to lose. Sometimes the higher seed survives by doing juuuust enough, and sometimes they just can't get going....not to take anything away from Richmond.

They were under seeded. The 12 wins ALL THE TIME. Why? Because they're the best team of the smaller conferences. Iowa "should" have won this game. But it was a bad match up against a team that won their conference championship too.

I'm not a fan of either team but Iowa was absolutely robbed by the refs at the end of the game. That missed 3 pt shot foul at 8:03 is just criminal.

That would of course be Richmond and that doesn't even take into account 1988 when they were a 15 and beat Indiana.

The annual Big Ten choke on apple sauce in March is upon us ! Like last year, the conference sent 9 teams to the tournament. Maybe more than one will make the sweet 16 this time.
I think a couple can get to the regional semifinals. Very possible.
I thought Iowa was the best big 10 team. Wisconsin probably makes sweet 16. Illinois could but Houston is a problem. Purdue also could but Virginia tech is a problem
@@ryanamburgy2791 Virginia won't be a problem for Purdue! Yale probably will be!! Don't forget Purdue got red-faced in an embarrassing loss to Northern Texas last year in the first round. It's tough to be a Purdue fan and hide the fact that you're a grown man in tears. Especially in the NCAA tourney.

Iowa played a step too slow and seemed unready for Richmond's backdoor plays. Too bad for them, was hoping for KU - Iowa matchup next week...
100%. As an Iowa fan I even knew going in that was how you stop Richmond. Play after play Iowa was getting burned BAD on the backdoor cuts. Anytime you saw a clear out it was coming- and worked.
Great upset from the record bracket busting school! Only thing I'll say is the commentator toward the last quarter calling fouls was insufferably homering Iowa so much that it quite literally cursed them lol. If the NCAA wants more viewership & attention, they'll need more professional persons on the call.

@@davej.meister5421 I didn't catch the whole game, but it didn't sound like Iowa came to play that game. However I the officials in the NCAA have been trash for a while now. I knew it wouldn't take long for them to be talked about. I couldn't believe some of the calls they missed at the end of that game either. The missed foul on the 3 pointer was as obvious as it gets with the official standing 5 feet away.

the non-call on the 3 near the end was absolutely a foul. They showed the replay multiple times. The other fouls he was whining about were less obvious tho

@@tyleru96 its actually been one in the last 32. I'm old enough to remember iowas 1980 final four and sweet sixteen or greater in 1983, 87 and 88 but many under the age of 35 are getting pretty fed up with first weekend NCAA exits.

Iowa was Spider bit
As a Big Ten (Wisconsin) fan who beat Iowa twice in the regular season btw, I'll give a few things I noticed- Idk why I even mentioned being a WI fan, more just someone who's seen Iowa play a lot. 1) It's been shown that there is a good correlation for upsets to happen for teams that have very good offenses (#3 in KenPom) but also pretty bad defenses (59 Kenpom) b/c if your offense is cold your defense can't bail you out which is exactly what happened. 2) Lots of the "experts" liked Iowa b/c they've been very hot recently but that's also been shown to have a weak correlation for similar reasons I pointed to above- just b/c you've been hot doesn't mean you can't have a bad game. 3) Last, I did expect Iowa to win this game, but they've been historically REALLY BAD in the tournament - Under Fran McCaffery (one of the biggest cry-babies blaming the refs for every loss) they HAVEN'T MADE IT PAST THE 2nd Round. When we beat them by 11 our most recent game, Fran and his son complained about 1 call from the refs for a week straight as if THAT made the difference in the game.
Wisconsin beat Iowa ONCE in the regular season.
They lost their chance to play them in the conference tournament by losing to Sparty.
Also Iowa beat Wisconsin three times in 2021.
I'm not going to argue Iowas NCAA results, especially when compared to Wisconsin, or Iowas overall BTT success compared to Wisconsin, just trying to get a couple facts straight while I can.
