Was the glass panel behind the burner on the wall necessary or just for design reasons? In other words, were you worried about the heat setting the wall on fire?

Hello William, yes you need protect the surrounding above the burner with nonflamable materials. It is not due to the heating but due to the flame. Thank you for your message. No, no special recommandations to place an ethanol burner insert in an existing fireplace.If you have a trap door above the hearth you can close it.
